I'm 39.

It's true. Astronomy as an observational activity and a hobby is undeniably dying. The obvious reason is simple - it's because our skies are dying.

No more Milky Way. No more beautiful summer nights lazilly lying out on the front lawn with a friend watching satellites and meteors go by. Today, it takes a concerted effort to see much of anything (besides the rare Comet Holmes like celestial event that can be seen from under a streetlight) and it is usually frustrating. It's not easy to find M33 when you can't even see the major constellations and the very brightest stars.

If I were a boy again, I think I'd still be into astronomy, but probably more of the virtual variety, gazing at pixels and tinkering with computer simulated star systems instead of taking in actual celestial photons (I currently enjoy astronomy in both virtual and non-virtual forms).

Of course, there's also the idea that astronomy is dying due to declining interest in science and the general decline of intellectualism or even of civilization if you want to be more extreme. However, revealing that belief would be exposing myself as a real curmudgeon, so I'll just keep those thoughts to myself. :-)
