Kitchen table spotting new
      #948455 - 05/09/06 03:25 PM

I noticed today that the seeing was not so bad, and my fiance has agreed (sort of) for me to use the kitchen table for my orion.. The windows in the kitchen seems to be the best one for spotting and photographing through. Beeing able to use the window saves me from cooldown time and freezing outside. I managed though today to photograph the lisence plate at 3 km (1.86 miles). The most zoomed picture is not very clear, but then again the magnification is high.

Pictures can be found here:

car at 3000m

I had to try the 5 miles version also, but this is not so easy.

Regards

Jostein

And here is a little picture I made scaling the planets similar to a car at 5+ miles:

Jostein ,

Thanks for your continuing participation on the Cloudy Days forum .

That last illustration showing relative image scale was an inspired and very interesting idea of yours .

I've certainly never seen Jupiter or Saturn with apparant size anywhere near THAT !

Considering the distances involved , those images of the car are VERY impressive in my opinion .

It's certainly not easy to believe that second photo was taken from 5 miles away !

Special thanks are due to your fiancee ! :-)

Regards , Kenny

KennyJ: Thanks for the nice words. I hope to contribute as much as I can, and since the sky is bright until end of august its good to have some other challenges in the meantime Btw, i hope you did not think that the blue car was 5 miles away The planet pictures are from hubble (picture abow) and from starry night for the picture at the website. They are scaled for the apparent size in these days (if i have done my calculations right).

binosbuyer: its an orion XT8'' reflector (fl 1200mm) with 2x barlow and 25mm ep. In addition I used optical zoom on the camera, i think the full 10x zoom for the 5 miles picture, and probably also for the most magnified at the 3km car. That should perhaps be comparable to a 25mm ep and a 20x barlow? (or to looking through an 1.25mm ep..) Im probably far into what would be empty magnification for visual, but for photography it helps for getting the last details.

Fascinating excercise.
I wonder how much improvement would come from not shooting through the glass of the window.
You would have to move outdoors and endure the cold for that though... merely opening the window would introduce plenty of nasty turbulence as the warm air spilled out (or the cold air spilled in).

To all of you,

Why don't you guys try or at least look into Baader Turbofilm? I've mentioned a few times before and I get virtually no response. It is inexpensive and optically very good. You could set a framed piece of the Turbo film in an open window.

Rich

Rich ,

I'm sorry for not having acknowledged your mention of this previously .

I'm considering acquiring a sheet or two to try out when I open the 45 degree skylight windows we have fitted into the roof of our bungalow .

Thanks for the heads - up !

Regards , Kenny

Hi Kenny,

Thank you. It wouldn't necessarily have to be a big sheet of Turbofilm, depending on how close one is to the "window".

Rich: Sorry for not beeing good at responding. I have looked a little bit into it, found a Norwegian dealer and looked at prices. What im doing now is more or less evaluating if the windows or the seeing is the limiting factor, and if its worth the trouble since our double glasing windows are not easily removed. The double glasing (with argon gas in the middle) isolates well, so there is minimal heat transport through. They are usually hinged either in the middle or in such a way that its possible to turn them around to wash the outside from the inside. Fitting the turbo film would require some serious modification. And if it does not isolate well the seeing would probably suffer. But thank you very much for the tip anyway.

Regards

Jostein

Thank you, but no need to feel bad. I just was surprised at the seeming lack of interest.

When you tilt the window as you would for cleaning, could you place a piece of stiff "foam board" in the openings with a modest sized window of the film? That would reduce the head loss to the outside. I wouldn't expect a person would be keeping the turbo film window in place for a long time.

Rich

Yes, that might actually be possible! Thanks for the idea, i had not thought of that, my first thought was to replace a part of the window or something like this, but a board and a piece of baaderfilm would maybe work just fine. It will have to be tried sometime during the coming months.
