Looking for a Reticle Eyepiece
      #949993 - 05/10/06 03:31 PM

Hi, I'm in the market for an eyepiece with an illuminated reticle to use for alignment purposes. I don't want to go below 12mm and that seems to leave Celestron and Meade as the choices, unless I am misinformed.

I read a terrible review of the Meade eyepiece on the Anacortes site and am a little leery of that choice. Can anyone give me some advice on this?

Thanks,

I use a Russell Optics 12mm crosshair. Not an illuminated reticle, but it was only $30 shipped. Works great for alignment.

I have the 12mm Meade illuminated reticle ep (double x-hair) and haven't had a problem with it. The illumination is o.k. if you leave it on the lowest setting. Anything higher is too bright. It would be nice if the reticle was focusable but that hasn't proven to be a problem for me.

If you just want illuminated crosshairs, this may be overkill, but the Celestron Micro-Guide EP is the best I've ever used.

Instruction manual here. The EP has some nice capabilities.

I just recently (2 weeks ago) purchased the Celestron 12.5mm Orthoscopic Micro Guide eyepiece. The eye relief was comfortable, the etching is sharp (and looks cool too)
The Reticle is focusable for different users. The illuminator has a positive feel to the on/off switch and is adjustable for brightness. It even came with a pamplet of angular equations in case you wanted to do astrometry or double star anglular separation stuff.
Over all, I think it's a great reticle ep. Just my $0.02..
