So why did the minireviews suddenly jump to 205?
      #975631 - 05/28/06 05:07 PM

In case you hadn't notice, the quantity jumped 40-50 units the other night.

We had to perform a little maintenance on the minireiw links post the other night, and while at it, I got real curious as to how many binoculars are in the minreviews. I copied off the minreviews link post to a word documemnt, printed it out and sat down to finally figure out how many we really have in there. And here's what I found.

There are a number of posts in the minireviews that don't count; eyepieces for the BT, all the aberration posts on the Nikon AEs, further comments on same model by the same author, the links to other forums. I didn't even count the 30+ binoculars in Mike Swaim's excellent report, that's a stand alone accomplishment in itself. (So plus 31 for the purists).

There are at least 50 minireview links that have more than one binocular in the review. Some of them I actually posted in alphabetical order in both (or more) places. But there are some posts with 4 or even 6 binoculars and since most of those are all the same brand, they're only in the links once, but never got counted as more than one. So the only way I could figure to get the real count was print out the entire list and check off each one, see if the multiples were listed in their own post, and don't count any duplications.

The result is actually 205+, because there are one or two posts that indicate some comparisons to several models and I didn't bother opening the thread to find out. As of May 27, 2006, there were 205 binos reviewed and listed in the minireview links. Multiple reviews of the same model binoc do count, or else that would have the effect of not counting reviews submitted by some people. FWIW, lately this thread gets 45-50 hits a day.

EdZ is being most generous. "We" who did the maintenance were EdZ and I, but I was the one who made the maintenance necessary. You see, at the request of a member, I tried to save EdZ some work and enter a minireview myself. Nothing worked as I expected it to. At one point the whole page got scrambled into a tangled mess, that I managed to fix myself. Then, when I thought I had undone the damage, we discovered that I had deleted an unknown number of minireviews after the "Swift" reviews. Though I should have been compelled to do all the work locating the missing reviews, EdZ ended up finding most of them. I eventually found a cached version of the minireview section cached before I even began to tinker with it, so I am confident that we found every missing review link.

I am telling this story for a number of reasons.

First, to publicly thank EdZ for helping me fix the mess I made.

Second, to thank EdZ for not chewing me out for fooling around in an area wherein I should have asked help.

Third, to inform everyone that EdZ is the sole proprietor of the carefully organized sticky section of the Binoculars forum, not because he demanded that of me but because I am simply not going to risk another such foulup and will refer all requests directly to EdZ.

But perhaps my most important point is to demonstrate how much the moderators care about these forums. In the great scheme of things, it really wouldn't matter very much if a minireview of a Vixen or Zeiss binocular got lost somehow. But within minutes of realizing what had happened, EdZ (me too, but I don't really count because I had made the mess) had dived into an hours long search, and we passed an endless number of PMs back and forth to make sure we didn't lose a single report. And I don't believe that we did.

And I'm glad that something good came out of this insofar as EdZ has now improved the organization of that already well organized section of the forum by recalculating the number of reviews to be found there.

Ed ,

Thanks for the explanation .

I HAD noticed the sudden rise in numbers early today and wondered where the " new entries " came from !

Incidentally , I'm sure at least TEN of those daily hits recently have been MINE :-)

But SERIOUSLY !

I've been spending a RIDICULOUS amount of time re - reading many of those reviews , but switching over to other review sites in between .

Yes , I've been " on a little mission " over the past few weeks !

Regards , Kenny

Well, lately meaning the last few months. You had noted in a post sometime back around Feb. 20th that within one day of each other the Best Of thread had reached 20,000 hits and the Minireviews thread had reached 30,000. In the last few weeks, the hit rate is a little higher than the average since Feb.

You are welcome Joad.

The good that has come out of this is that now a complete file backup of all the code behind all those links is on file in a document on my computer and every time in the future that the post is updated I will make a new backup of the code. We will never be more than one new post behind in the event of any future mishaps.

I feel lucky to rub elbows with some of the veteran astronomers and binocular experts that heavily populate this group.

Resources and personnel like that in this group (myself excluded!) blur the line between amateur and professional.

Thanks for keeping this forum one of the best (if not the best) resources for binocular reviews, binocular optics and binocular astronomy. The "Best of" threads EdZ has stickied to the top of this forum should be required reading all persons interested in any aspect of binoculars.

Clear dark two-eyed skies...

That EdZ is really a workhorse!
Joad, sounds like a real learning experience for you. After all was said and done, a fair measure of good came of it all, so you shouldn't feel bad.

I always say, the binocular forum is the most well organized of the whole site. Surely almost entirely through EdZ's valiant efforts.

EdZ, I did notice that sudden count jump several nights ago and wondered about it and appreciate your explanation and even much moreso your work on the forum and your sharing of your knowledge of binoculars (and other things)!
