PAS Strikes Again! new
      #984367 - 06/04/06 12:56 AM Attachment (60 downloads)

Today, 6/3/06, the Pontchartrain Astronomy Society held a public stargaze at the Bayou Segnette State Park in Gretna,LA., a suburb of New Orleans. The event was a follow-up to the recent Astronomy Day activity at a local shopping mall.

We held tonights gathering in the parking lot of the now closed wave pool area. The weather cooperated with low humidity and clear skies! There were 22 PAS members on hand with telescopes from the 16" Telekit manned by Lowell McCormick to the 60mm. Televue with John Stamm at the controls. In all there were 79 general public visitors who were treated to the Moon,Saturn,Jupiter, and even some distant galaxies courtesy Jack Huerkamp and his Mallin-Cam.

I thought it was a very successful night with good viewing and good attendance. A lot of youngsters were on hand to keep the questions flowing and even a reporter from the Times-Picayune newspaper was there to photograph and document our efforts.

See following photos.

Just got home about 45 minutes ago. I'm so glad you brought your camera! Bonehead me, I remembered ALL of my astrogear, which mightily impressed me...until I realized I had forgotten the camera. I keep telling myself to make a hard list to follow. Maybe the next go 'round!

It was a terrific night! High magnification on the C6-R and wide view with the WO. Saturn and the Beehive as seen through the WO (with the 21 Steph ) was a big hit, especially with the adults.

I saw Omega Centauri through a 15 inch truss dob. Even being very low on the horizon AND with plenty of light pollution, it was a magnificent sight. Unfortunately, my view looked directly through a small tree. At least I got to see it!

All in all, a very nice evening.

David

I guess being a public outreach event rather than a 'serious' star party saved Remy from a severe thrashing after that flash photo after dark.

Quite a crowd on hand. Glad to hear the weather was so cooperative. I hope a few converts were made over the course of the evening.

We had a pretty good night up here as well, but rather than hijack the PAS thread, I'll start another, in the Beginners section.
