I was on vacation for a few days at my home place last week, and the clarity of air was not to bad. I took these shots with a sony H9 wich is a new 15x zoom camera. The first one is a wide angle (31mm eq) shot, the second is a 15x zoom (465mm eq) of the view from the top of a hill near where I grew up. The target on the second shot is the island Værøy, the outermost island of the Lofoten island that can be seen from this distance. The distance should be approximately 110km (68 miles) and the map on the bottom shows it on a map from google.

Nice shots, Jostein. If this is with "not too bad" clarity, does that mean there's a possibility of catching something even more remote under better conditions still?

Thanks, I doubt it, there are some islands even further out, but the main one, Røst, is only 11 meter high and thus under the horizon. There are also some bird islands with small mountains on them but I have newer seen them. They might also be hidden behind the mountain from this spot.

Very nice shots Jostein. I really like these long range shots you post, very interesting.
I notice in the second picture at the higher power that to me using the map scale to the islands [not the one at 68 miles ]looks to be about 10 miles[ 17 Km ?] and the small ridge, meadow in the second pictures looks to be about 5 miles , does that seem at least close?
Thanks so much for taking the time to post this.:-)

Jostein ,
I think your idea to emulate something Steve M. did a while back , by posting a couple of photos , followed by a map to indicate distance and direction of the objects viewable in the photos , is a great one .
Apart from the photography and copying and pasting of maps and posting to a web site , it is the kind of thing I've been enjoying for years , just on a visual basis .
Regards , Kenny

OK I'll give it a try.
The following was taken yesterday under good, but not excellent seeing conditions.
All distances are very accurate and measured with a GIS (Geographic Information System) work station. Distance should be accurate within 1/3 of a meter.
NOTE: I'm above targets 1 and 4 by about 400 feet looking down on them.
Also don't take the quality of the shots too seriously. They have been extremely down-sized and compressed with little post processing. They just give you only a very crude idea of what the camera saw.
All shots were taken with the Pentax 100mm spotter at 38x and are full frame with no cropping.

God's Country; pure and simple. Sparrow, It gives us a good perspective when we look at your other photos. Google Earth puts the town across the river as Prairie du Chien (?)
Jostein's and these photos take the edge off of summer down here (111F heat indices or the bottomside of overcast; it's either one or the other here near the wrong end of the river).
We'll burn these scenes into memory just like the ones that Steve M. put up a while back :-)

Sparrow, Thanks so much for taking the time to post this excellent long distance "photo" shoot. I really like how you set this up. Everything on this thread is top shelf stuff , sure makes this site interesting.

Jostein,
Your long distance shots are just awesome! I have the predecessor Sony H5 with 12x zoom and will try to snap long distance photos with my 66mm refractor as soon as I have found an adapter to the Scopetronix maxview 40mm eyepiece. It hardly will reach to your levels, but anyway...
Sparrow, I really enjoy your shots too! Nice nature pictures.

Mooreorless: That sounds about right. Among those small islands out there (called Engelvær) at 10 miles or so my father spent much of his life in his fishingboat. He is retired now though.
KennyJ: Glad you like it. I think placing views on a map makes them more interresing.
Sparrow: Great quality on the photos. I really, really want to have equipment like you.
Swedpat: Thats great Im i bit to lazy taking the big reflector out, must get a smaller scope.
Regards
Jostein
