With Burnham's in hand I was exploring Hercules. I viewed M13, Alpha Herculis, and finally Zeta Herculis. Once found, I cranked up the power to 433x in my 12.5 inch reflector and it was not split. I thought I had the wrong star so I double checked again and then upped the power to 866x and there it was. Talk about a tight double. I backed off to 747x and got a pleasing split with just barely black sky between the two stars. According to Burnham's, it varies from 0.4 to 1.6" separation. I would say it is close to 0.6 and a challenge right now for 8 inch and above scopes. Anyone else tried splitting Zeta? Lawrence R.

According to the data in the WDS Sixth Catalog of Orbits, Zeta Her has the following PA and Sep for 2005-2009:
2005 226.1° 0.93" 2006 214.8° 1.01" 2007 204.9° 1.06" 2008 195.7° 1.09" 2009 186.8° 1.11"
However, with the magnitude difference from a 2.95 primary to a 5.4 companion, it will be a much harder split than just its separation might lead one to believe. I haven't looked at this one this year, but I'll give it a try with my 8" on the next steady night.
cheers, andrew

Thanks for the information. I may try to split it with my 6 inch reflector to see if I can.

I had a questionable split on this one last year, using 8 in CPC with 320x.
