This wonderful and incredible film is scheduled to be released on September 16th. It's dedicated to amateur astronomers such as ourselves and how technology has improved for amateurs. Timothy Ferris has based this film on some of the events which took place in his fantastic book, "Seeing in the Dark". I consider it a "must read". Timothy Ferris is a well respected author and writer and has contributed more to astronomy than I can possibly write. He has also forwarded countless books many of us already own. His previous films "Life beyond Earth" and "The Creation of the Universe" are a monument. Timothy Ferris also played a large part in the well known Gold Record aboard the Voyager space crafts. Timothy invited me to a sneak preview of the new PBS film where he answered numerous questions from critics and I asked a few questions myself. I now have a copy of the film but I hope many of you get to see it. Stephen Omeara, Barbara Wilson and Rob Gendler were contributers as well. I think it's an important film because it raises awareness for children and adults about the effects of light pollution and how we effect our world.

Hi Guys,
That's an excellent question. I'll ask Timothy if PBS plans to release it on television that date as well or if it's just the video release date. I'm pretty certain that is just the release date of the film in High Definition video. I'm quite certain it will be televised but I'm not sure when, but I will ask and let you know. I've already watched the film and there's a 3D segment going through the Orion nebula. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!

Thanks to Daniel for bringing attention to a 'don't miss' film!
I find that Ferris has a website for this effort: web page
According to that the broadcast will be on PBS September 19, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. (as always check your local PBS schedule.)

Hi Daniel. Cool picture of you with Tim Ferris. Based on his voice in my Audible version of "Seeing in the dark", I expected him to look just a bit older. Not sure why. :-)

Thanks for the feedback guys. Well, Ferris has been around this hobbyfor quite some time. I've read the books a few times already but never heard the audio version, that's interesting. If you check his bio, you'll see he's got a couple of incredible videos. What a talented man he is. If he had received only one question, he could have spent an hour answering it. He's a very calm and extremely relaxed man on stage. What I want to do is see the film in HD, especially the outdoor seens re-enacted with him as a kid and the M42 flyby. Ferris was kind enough to invite me to his place to see the HD version on Sep 11th before the release. Thanks to all.

Hi Daniel,
Could you find out from him if there are plans to release the film in Blue Ray or HD-DVD?
Thanks, John Vogt

Daniel, I am looking forward to the PBS airing of the special.
Tim wrote to tell me that it is definitely on PBS on Sept 19, check times for local listing. there is now a website http://seeinginthedark.org/
I just got the final DVD advance copy and it looks fantastic. I hope lots of people will tune in, so everyone spread the word, as this is about us amateur astronomers and what we like to do!

Professor Ferris was at the Stellafane ATM convention last year to film a sequence for the program. I had met him a few years previously at a talk he gave in Philadelphia. The DVAA, one of the clubs that I belong to, conducted a star party afterwards.
Here's a report that I posted on the Stellafane web site:
http://www.stellafane.com/convention/2006/reports.html
I've read a number of his books. Seeing in the Dark is my favorite.

I've included a photo that I took on the hill leading up to the McGregor Observatory. Timothy Ferris is seated at the right.

Is "Seeing in the Dark" destined to be a classic like "Cosmos"?
