Magnification and microphotography
      #1750769 - 08/01/07 12:29 AM Attachment (38 downloads)

I thought it would be interesting to post three images of the same object taken at three different magnifications. It illustrates how, like astronomy, an increase in magnification results in a reduction of field. It also shows how, like astronomy, less magnification is often better. The object is a cross section of a common pine stem. Sorry, I'm not enough of a botanist to know the type of pine. My scope is an achromat, not an APO. There are APO microscopes, but like APO astronomical telescopes, they're beyond my pocket book. All the images are single shots, not stacked. The first is taken at 400X.

Here's the same pine stem at 100X.

I too am impressed with these images. You've also clearly shown how it is necessary to apply significant amounts of magnification to see detail in the images, a fact many observers fail to recognize. We often hear observers talking about how they prefer telescopic images with 2-3mm exit pupils, when it might be necessary to use a 1mm to 0.5mm exit pupil to really see minute details. You have shown that very well here.
