Rare 19th Century Observing Book Online
      #1855371 - 09/20/07 11:51 PM

Hello members, I am very honored to announce the release of a book that has never been published. The book is handwritten by Charles Grover (1842 - 1921) and is the second volume of his personal observations that spanned 49 years, Volume One has been lost and never published.

The text and the amazing drawings can act as an example for aspiring amateur astronomers today showing how keeping a journal of your observations can make an incredible difference to the people around you and for those of future generations.

I have labored solidly for quite sometime now in association with Jerry Grover of England who is a great great grandson of Charles Grover and to him I am personally indebted beyond a level he will ever know. The book is free to read and I take pleasure in announcing it in the CN forum and I commend it to all.

Please enjoy, “Drawings of the Sun, Moon and Planets observed by Charles Grover” Volume 2 beginning on December 21st, 1861, available here: http://www.antiquescopes.com/Vol2.aspx Please remember that this work is copyright protected and is made available for educational study only.

Thank you for the positive replies. I am working on creating the book in PDF format for downloading in several moderately sized chunks, so that people can read it offline at their leisure. When I finish that, I'll let you all know.

Thank you for the hard work you put into this . For a lover of classical literature and a small scope observer, to read this is a pure delight. And his observing skills should be a lesson to all of us. His observatory telescope was a 2" refractor!

Hi Tailwag,

Thanks for making these available for us. I was able to download the Part 1 2 3 but the other parts came over corrupted and I haven't been able to open them up.

Anyone else having a problem?

Did anyone get all the files downloaded for this wonderful book? I was able to download part 1 and part 2 but parts 3-8 are all smaller than the stated 14 megs and Winzip says they are corrupted and will not open.

If anyone was successful would you be kind enough to email them to me? PM me and I'll send you my email address. I tried contacting Tailwag via PM and from the contact link on his site but haven't gotten a response.

I would love to read the rest of this book.

thanks,

Hello again, sorry it's taken so long but the files are now fully restored and you should have no trouble downloading them, go to: http://www.antiquescopes.com/BookVol2PDF.aspx

Also, sometime later this year or early next year, another book will be fully transcribed, which is currently in Enland and has just be found also written by Charles Grover, so when the time comes, I'll put that on the website also and drop a note in this forum as well.

Best wishes.
Ron
