Suk: I see you have a pair of Dunlavy SC-Vs. I remember listening to his speakers when I lived in TX and he was building them in Corpus Christi - before he moved "down under". Alas, that's been a long time ago and I don't remember quite what they sounded like - just that they were physically large.

I note that you are also a photographer. Another interest of mine as well - film in 35mm, roll film, 4x5, and now DSLR, not that you could tell from the crummy photos I posted.

Don:

Yes, I have the SC-V's. Dunlavy was probably building Duntech's before he moved "down under", Duntech was definitely the brand he had when he was in Australia. I think he started DAL when he moved to the US. So sad for us that he retired.

Interesting trivia - I believe he invented some kind of high sensitivity radio antenna but was not publicly credited with the design because it was done while working for a government agency in secrecy.

His big design goals:

- phase coherency - SC-V's will do a credible job of reproducing a square wave at 1 khz and an impulse at 10 feet
- first order crossovers - because (active digital filters aside) that's the only way to get phase coherency
- minimization of diffraction effects off of the edge of the cabinet - he owned the patent on putting absorptive materials around the tweeters, midrange, etc.
- high sensitivity, but in a sealed box for phase coherency, hence the enormous speakers
- no belief in exotic materials or technology. The cabinet is massively built, 4" thick in places, but plain materials, and prosaic speakers, but carefully selected and measured/matched before installation

I haven't heard the state of the art recently, because I've been so happy with the SC-Vs. Imaging and soundstage depth are incredible once they're set up correctly - because of the controlled dispersion they're quite finicky to get "just so". My room is treated reasonably heavily and it took me quite a while to get the image to not to pull to one side. The last tweak to get images to lock in was a large tube trap directly behind me, with the absorptive side facing my head.

Bass is incredibly tight and deep, but not in the full way a ported can sometimes sound, but kickdrum is incredible. Midrange is very very transparent, with a recent upgrade to the Benchmark DAC1 HDR, they have the cliche'd "you are there", or actually "they are here" quality.

The only place I'd fault the speakers is in the treble - doesn't have the glimmering shimmer in cymbals, but on the other hand, they aren't "hot", so I can live with that.

I also have SC-IIs in my bedroom, augmented with a REL T2, a NAD intergrated amp, and driven by another Benchmark DAC. In some ways the sound is better there - event more coherent in the midrange, as you'd expect from a 2-way.

Cheers,
Suk

Hi all, I just saw this forum much further down the list then I usually go so I thought I would post

I built these about 4 1/2 years ago, they are Linkwitz Orions, not my design. I did have to build them from scratch and built the active crossovers although I did get the PCB - not populated though.

They run off four rotel amplifies, one channel per driver. Each has 2x10"peerless XLS subs , a seas 8" mid and a seas soft dome tweeter.

I also use a Shanling SACD cd player. Very happy with this set up. I am not in any hurry to change it. They have the WAF that my previous set of line arrays didnt - being 6'2" tall..

Hmm, the images are not showing so here is an attachment of one speaker as its being built..

Thanks!!

I've owned them since new, bought in 1989. I've had to repair the panels several times (voice coil delamination) but I'm still using the original ribbon tweeters. I have built different stands that brace the panels and pierce the carpet with spikes. Other than that, as built.

nice pic. I need to get the camera and lights out and do a proper photo as well. Good job.

Here's a few pics of my secondary system - its mainly for video, casual listening, music videos, and I usually use this system for listening via headphones. The video system has BD, DVD, S-VHS, and I can connect an old LD player if needed. I can play SACD on the Pioneer 563 as well.

The audio portion is a bit odd;

Rega Planet 2000 (CD)
LINN Kairn pre
STAX DA-80 power
JAMO E-870 speakers (modified)
DNM solid core speaker cable
Contak 503 silver interconnects
Grado RA1 headphone amp
NAD 4020A tuner
