There was a time when binocular eyecups only came in two uncomfortable designs: inflexible hard plastic or metal eyecups. Eyeglass wearer? Too bad. Today, binocular buyers have three types of eyecups to choose from when buying bins: twist-ups, pop-ups, and the rubber fold downs. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Which kind do you prefer and why?
Not all eyecups are created equal even if they are the same type. So also mention the binocular the eyecups are on.
For example, I found the push-up cups on the 820 Audubon to be hard, uncomfortable, and so wide that I couldn't fit them in my eye sockets to get close enough to see the entire FOV. The push-ups on the 8X32 Regal/Noble were more to my liking, softer and narrower, they fit my facial features well (deep-set eyes, high-bridged nose) and held their position even when I pushed hard against them, though I wonder about push-ups becoming loose with repeated use.

Hi Brock!
As wearer of eye glasses I prefer either the twist up or pop up (I think that is the same as "slide up") eye-cups. Some of them are good both with or without glasses, other are good only with glasses on. The thick kind of Pentax PCF WP-serie work very well with glasses but are very uncomfortable without...

The twist ups on my Oberwerk 8x42WP's hold their position well, but are of the hard rubber variety and are not the most comfortable. They do not give any IP distance problems.
The fold downs on my Oberwerk 11x56 are extremely comfortable.

I prefer twist up or pop up eyecups. They make sharing the binocular with someone else much easier than a fold down eyecups like the ones on the Nikon SEs.

My wife and I have different models of Leica Trinovids and swap them between us. We both wear glasses, though I often view without, so the sliding eyecups get plenty of exercise! As well as wanting top bins we chose them because of this feature and they serve us well. We are delighted with the view and the eyecups!

I only like WINGED eyecups really -- and I can't really use those now I need to wear glasses to obtain optimum sharpness.
I HATE HARD eyecups of any kind , whether they are twist , pop or rock 'n roll .
The rubbery foldable ones which are on the Captain's Helmsman are VERY soft and pliable -- and very deep -- so much so that I believe they COULD be manipulated to come to rest a few millimetres proud of the oculars , if that's what anyone wanted to do.
The Zeiss BGAT has similar ones , but not as soft and pliable , and the Swift Kestrel has very HARD rubbery rock 'n rollers.
I don't mind the twist -ups on Swarovski ELs and that type of modern roof , but I don't like the " push -pull - slight twist - pull a bit harder and hope for the best and hope it doesn't pull the zoom lens out with it ) type of arrangement which came with my Zeiss diascope zoom lens.
That said , for barely £300 for the whole eyepiece , what can one expect ? :-)
Regards , Kenny
