Probably my best Jupiter image so far

Well the seeing was great here tonight, it took a while to come on but it did at the right time.

Lots of detail visible and of course there are all the spots and if you don't notice it straight away you can see Io cruising in front of the NEB.

I have more data than this, but too tired now to do more processing. It has been a huge weekend for me and I have really be happy with all the good seeing. Praise goes to the weather gods again.

Probably one of THE best Jupiter images so far by anyone.

So close to perfection I think I would actually rotate the planet to be up/down properly. I would like to see Ganymede under these conditions.

Paul, Holy cow! The detail in the GRS is amazing. You should not only be happy but are probably still on a high right now after a night like that. May you be blessed with some more nights like that!

Hi Paul,

you've absolutely outdone yourself. That's no small feat given the super images you posted this last week. Congratulations on the finest of effort.

The four main red spots and Io in transit. It doesn't get any better than that.

Here is a resample of the same image. Please click on the attachments link to get the full size. The compression has produced some artifacts that are not very nice in the forum view.

Absolutely spectacular images, Paul. Shows a man well in control of his equipment, capture and processing.. So when the perfect seeing comes along, a perfect image results.

Nice work and congrats on spaceweather.

Ah, so it does. Images are very very nice!

Did you consider cropping to 800px wide? Then I think the inline view is unchanged from the attachment.

Re: Probably my best Jupiter image so far

Paul, that 12 bit really delivers

That Io is almost extra-terrestially superb - in that pic it is presented completely as a 3-dimensional object - and it really stands out magnificiently from the Jovian disc. Never seen it quite like that before in my life.

The richness, detailed presence of the atmospheric system is also a spectacular sight, and that 3-dimensionality coming out of that Io disc enhances the feeling.

What can you say, but abso-Jovian-lutely fantastic!

Thanks for us being able to see these pics! They are such a joy to look at! Be well!

A great Jupiter Paul. Nothing to add on all these comments. Very amazing image of Io.
I have to quote Mike S. about the right control of your equipment.
The seeing is important but a standardized method to acquire and a right protocol to process are the best mix to obtain top level planetary images.

Thanks Mike,

Thanks all for the really nice comments.

Anthony I might do a bigger resample and ensure that it is at the 800 pixel size.

Tom, if you go to this site, http://www.damianpeach.com/barbados07.htm these were taken by Damian and if you follow Birds link (in his sig) you can see images he got last year which are better than mine still. There is always someone better to aspire to. Thanks so much anyway.

Re: Probably my best Jupiter image so far

Mike the 12 bit refers to the bit depth of the image. My Skynyx can also be used in 12 bit. It gives a much better grey scale which of course means you can work with the data better.

Re: Probably my best Jupiter image so far

Hey Paul, am I figuring this right? You captured the first image at 4:15am local time? This makes sense since that's when Jupiter is best placed from here.

How do you prepare for morning sessions like this one? Do you do an all-nighter or nap early and then set up?

Charlie

Re: Probably my best Jupiter image so far

Charlie, no that is not how I am doing things. I am imaging from about 200 am local and imaging through to 6 am. My first images were when the seeing was very unstable. I am doing all nighters though as sleeping and then getting up and even having gear prepared is not well organised. You cna make mistakes with collimation because your eyes are not awake and I find it better for myself to run like this. It means the following day is killed but I just turn the phone off and crash.

In terms of seeing, it ranges really, good seeing seems at present to start about 230 ish and goes for a few hours. As winter progresses here is becomes earlier an earlier.

Fantastic sequence, Paul

Being used to probably seeing a shadow on the disc - or just a hint of something else - this detailed 3D -presence is amazing to look at - no matter how many times you choose to look!

Hi Paul:

Absolutely beautiful! It must have been exciting watching the capture screen, knowing that you were recording extremely sharp images. I hope you took a little time to relax and do some observing, that's still the most enjoyable part of this great hobby.
