Binocular Icon 11 : A ring with a diamond.

There is a nice little treasure to be discovered by the binocular observer. It is a ring with a shiny diamond, called: the Engagement Ring. The diamond is a star we all know so well: Polaris. Just point your pair of binoculars at Polaris and you will see that the Pole Star is part of a 40’ circle of fainter stars. I wonder if any romantic astronomer ever shared this treasure with his beloved? Northern hemisphere observers can see the ring any time of the year!

This asterism is another fine addition to your work. It captures some of the raw wonder and thrill of a group of youngsters staring up through the galaxy with their mouths open as someone points out asterisms and constellations.

"Oh, I see it...yeah..Oh Wow!" "Where, where is it? I don't see it!!!" "Look at that big star over there...see the one? Now look just below it and over to the side...see, it starts there and then goes down to those three stars...see it?" "No what star?" "LEWIS are you trying to be stupid again, I am going to pinch your ear if you start that again!" "NO, SISSY I don't see it! No pinching!"

"OK, that's enough, let him alone. Look Lewis, I am going to shine my flashlight where it is...look down the light going into the sky...OK, it starts here....then goes ooovveeerr to there...then down..." "OH, OH, I see it, I see it, there it is...its right there...I see it!! Does everybody see it? I can see it! It's cool."

Sketching with binoculars, bringing astronomy down to earth.

Good work,
Charles

I'm truly enjoying your binocular sketches, Rony. There's so many beauties to be observed with smaller aperture and less magnification...as you have proved time and time again. Well done!

Charles, Frank, Mark, Erika and Eric : thank you!! I really do appreciate your comments.

Erika : There are many, many beauties to be enjoyed with binoculars. The following months will bring us the summer milky way wonders to be discovered.

Rony,

A beautiful and accurate observation of the North Star and surrounding field. This is an interesting field to study. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Rony, your placement of stars in these sketches is really really good...consistently. I need to know better how to do this. Care to provide a brief review of your procedure to set the field on paper?

Re: Binocular Icon 11 : A ring with a diamond.

Carlos and Roland, thank you for the kind words.

@ Roland : As you probably know, I first make a pencil sketch behind the eyepiece, folowed by a digital impression on the computer. The pencil sketch is based on a frame work of anchor stars, the brightest stars in the field of view. All other stars are placed in relation to these framework stars. When I make the digital sketch, I compare the star placements with a print-out of the starfield (generated by Cartes du Ciel). I've learned to build up the starfield of the computer sketch in the same chronological order as I did with the field sketch. This helps me to find my way around in the framework. I hope this makes sense to you?

Clear skies,

Re: Binocular Icon 11 : A ring with a diamond.

I think so. So your computer sketch, generated first from the field sketch, is adjusted as needed when the star field printout shows adjustment is necessary? And you are using the field sketch and the star field printout together as you generate your computer star field....then add the effects? Sorry to be dumb about this; I don't use any of the computer stuff except to scan the final drawing, so my questions may be pretty basic. In any case, really nice appearance on these sketches. And, it sounds like the Trico arrangement really helps the ability to do the field sketch. I really like that idea.
