Crescent Moon in June

I was able to view the Waxing Crescent Moon (2.6 days old) over the western horizon on June 25, 2009 (02:00 U.T.). The thin Moon was a golden color and it's light lit up the surrounding clouds. The scene was a beautiful one. I hope that you all like it.

A digital rendering produced in Photoshop CS3.

Carlos,

Excellent rendering in Photoshop CS3! I love how you captured the light reflecting off the top of the clouds. It is really beautiful.

Carlos my dear friend, that is exquisite! I love everything about this sketch, from the beautiful deep blue atmosphere (I feel as if I can breathe the humid Florida air) the way the light reflects off of the clouds as Jay pointed out, to the delicately accurate crescent Moon and very subtle Earthshine. The whole composition is just gorgeous!

Re: Crescent Moon in June

Thank you all for the very kind compliments on my Crescent Moon observation. The scene was beautiful and somewhat surreal as the thin golden Moon was visibly floating in the blue sky between lavender clouds. I am happy that I was able to render the lighting upon the clouds and Earthshine well. The subject (Golden Crescent Moon) made it easy for me.

The best of luck in your own observations.

Carlos

A beautiful rendering of the crescent moon with earthshine but I can just get lost in that painterly quality that you have represented in the clouds. And that twilight blue sky is so real. Great sky color rendition.

Excellent!

Mark and Tommy,

Thank you for the compliments on my Crescent Moon observation. I am glad that I was able to capture the soft quality of the clouds with the moonshine upon it. I need to continue to practice my digital art, as we all do. I look forward to your future observations.

Re: Crescent Moon in June

Beautiful work, Carlos. I was treated to the same view the first night of Green Bank Star Quest 6. As you know, most folks come to these star parties for DSO observing under dark skies. Some even profess an active dislike for lovely Luna. Yet, as I looked around the observing field, almost every scope and binocular was trained on the Moon as it hovered above the western horizon--a sight too beautiful to resist. The terminator ran through Mare Crisium and Petavius leaving half the mare illuminated and the crater floor dark with the rim and central peaks bright. I happily showed this sight to every passer by.
