Sounds crazy but I was considering buying a used Meade AR-5 for imaging and using a minus violet filter to remove some of the CA...Any examples of this out there or for that matter any other make/brand of Acromatic being used for AP work Thanks Greg |

Chuck, Those are great shots!! for any scope! and with thirty second exposures! I had no idea an achro with minus violet filter could do so well with a color imager. Ive always wished I could use an Orion ST 120 with a M.V. filter. Does anyone know if this has been tried? -Mark |

Hi Chuck, Thanks That's very impressive...did you use any Photoshop actions in addition to remove any halos.... Also I typically go out to 3 or 4 minutes of exposure Can I stack for instance a LP Filter (ex. Lumicon Sky Glow)with a Minus Violet with sucess... Greg |

Hi Mark, The Ca presence is due to aperture size and if the focal length is short resulting in a a faster scope then the ca will get more Prominent Greg |

The AR-5 is a much lighter optical tube. I've had both the AR-5 and AR-6 (I currently have an Ar-5). The Ar-6 is a heavy scope (about 24 pounds). The Ar-5 is only 15 pounds. Also, my Ar-5 is f/9.3, while the Ar-6 is f/8. I have less chromatism with my Ar-5 than I had with the Ar-6. |

Thanks for the comments. Looking back I see that I did not have my Minus Violet filter in. The image train was as follow's. AR5 telescope - focal reducer - IR filter - DSI II color camera. Used Envisage to capture. Saved as BMP. Processed with Nebulosity which I just purchased that same night. Had no idea what I was doing. Still need to read manual. There is an action in Nebulosity to tighten stars which does seem to help. The only halos I seem to get are from very bright stars but I do not find them to be a problem. |
