Prom Sketches 2009-07-01 19:15UT

Good seeing (probably accompanied the humidity). I was able to use a 12mm Cemax to good effect. May try and get a CaK sketch later in the day... for now, back to work. 
Oops... image too big... replaced with correct size. My apologies.

I got the curve of the Sun wrong but that's because I was trying to 'go big'. I think, but am not 100% sure, that drawing bigger sketches means more room to get the details right. So I started drawing the prominences first, taking up most of the 8.5 x 5.5 sheet, then added the surface as an afterthought.
Heck it's fun... which is all that really matters!
Thanks for the encouraging words!  I have a long ways to go to match your talent.

That's a well done observational sketch, Jeff. Going big is probably a good idea. It's easy to make the limb too curved--for most prom sketches, the limb is almost flat. Keep up the good work.

It's an issue we all deal with. Another common struggle is oversizing features while trying to sketch in the details, such as sunspots or prominences. This is why sketching larger is beneficial, since we have more room to add the finer details. In DSO sketching, it's easy to sketch the stars way too large while trying to get magnitudes correct, or drawing something a lot more contrasty than what they really are visually.
The good thing is that we can use sketching as a means to train our eyes to notice more detail with each session. So even if we don't get the limb arc quite right or oversize something, we've still benefited from the entire sketch experience.

I love any eye-->brain-->hand image! Drawings convey a human perspective in ways no camera can duplicate.
