What I did is sketch pencil on white paper. Then I used that as a pattern in the background of a photoshop drawing to place the features and relative brightness of them. Finally, I turned off the background and exported a JPEG.

That's great that you can see detail in that bandwidth. Have you recorded any prominences in Cak visually? Great job with your sketches and also for trying out different techniques.

No not yet. I understand it should be possible... The detail in CaK, especially the texture, is something I am not sure yet how to capture. At times the texture of the Chromospheric Network (Is that correct?  ) is quite obvious. But more than I can figure out how to texture with my tools ... yet! 
Thanks for the encouraging words!  I have a long ways to go to match your talent.

You may want to check out a book called Astronomical Sketching(not saying you need it, but for tips and techniques)our very own Erika is featured in there and I learned quite a bit from it as I never considered myself having an iota of artistic skills...
Great sketch too!

Nice sketch, Jeff. Those plage areas really seem to stand out in CaK.
Have you considered using blue textured paper? Cansun makes some--look on the Dick Blick website.

Dick Blick art supplies is a fantastic place to pick up supplies, like Michael suggested. Finding paper with just a little bit of texture will help you create the orange-peal effect you're looking for.
There are different blending techniques you can use to help achieve this along with the texture of the paper. We can go into more detail on that regard if you were wanting to go that route. I'm afraid I lack any skills with drawing using photo-editing software, but in the sketching forum, there is a sticky thread called "Best of...sketching tips and tutorials" or something like that. In there, we have saved numerous posts to assist with all areas of sketching, including digital sketching. Carlos Hernandez comes to mind instantly for digital sketching and he'd be a great one to start with.
Stephen (our Darkstar here in the solar forum ) is also very good with digital sketching as I believe he adds the mottling with the computer.

Thanks everyone. Another one today I hope as there is still plenty to see / draw. I have the Sketching book... just not getting it yet!  It's one thing to read it, another to do it. That why I admire all of you with native talent. Practice is the key!  I've not done any drawing of anything other than some double stars in 50 years.
And I have checked out many threads. They are fantastic! It's just a matter of remembering what I've read and trying it. There is a lot to absorb.
