Solar Binocular
      #37854 - 01/07/04 10:45 PM Attachment (55 downloads)

I'm new to this, so please bear with me. I used some pvc pipe fittings and some left-over Baader solar filter material to make these filters for my Pentax 20x60 binocular and I am very pleased with the way things work. I had ordered a Coronado Binomite, but facing an indefinite delay in shipping, I kludgeded this together. I think things worked out for the best. Twenty power gives one a pretty big image of the sun. Very nice. If you can mount them on a tripod it would be even better.

Thanks you Don. This binocular can be, and occasionally is, mounted on a tripod, but I usually just prop myself and the binocular against my car for a quick solar viewing session.

Hi Wilson,

Looks good to me. Do the pvc fittings just snug down over the binocs like lens caps? What size are they? (inches or metric?)

Hello Michael,

The PVC fittings were step up/down adapters for joining 2in. to 3in. O.D. PVC pipes that I got from Ace Hardware. I cut off the 2in. part and fashioned a ring with a piece of plastic, stuck the Baader film to the ring with double stick tape and screwed to ring to the PVC with nylon nuts and bolts. The outer diameter of the Pentax 20x60 binocular objective ends is about 2 7/8in. I made up the difference with adhesive Velcrow-type hook fasterners stuck to the inside of the pipe. The filters fit snugly for safety's sake, but don't require a lot of force to put on and take off.

P.S.

Here is a picture of the backside of my binocular filters.
