2012 Arizona Science & Astronomy Expo
      #5288999 - 06/25/12 07:39 PM

Arizona Science & Astronomy Expo
Held at Tucson Convention Center
November 10th & 11th 2012

After successfully running the North East Astronomy Forum and Telescope Show for the last 15 years, and with much demand from the industry and public alike, my team and I agree.
What better place for a west coast NEAF than sunny Tucson.

ASAE will be competing in the current economy for west coast attention with (at the very least) SCAE, PATS and RTMC. RTMC is in May and has been about dead vendor wise for some time now. PATS is in September and was not well attended by vendors last year. Hoping for better this year. SCAE is extremely popular (for a smallish event) and is in July (that is next month, be there or be square). If ASAE is a go, then I'll be there!

And to start off the day, I am extremely happy to announce the addition of Mr Adam Block and the Mt Lemmon Sky Center. Mr Block will be hosting the ASAE's Imaging Workshop. Details to follow, but looking like it will start with a tour of the UofA mirror Lab, followed by 2 days of hands on imaging on the mountain...WOW!!!!

If you can but it together and get it off the ground that would be great. I'll bring this up at our next club meeting, High Desert Astronomy Club of Kingman AZ. I'm confident that many of our members would be willing to attend. Tucson's a great place, sounds like a nice "away trip" with perhaps side trips to the mirror lab, Kitt Peak or Mt. Lemmon weather permitting.

Keep us posted,

Bert

Lightbucket,

You can bring this back to meeting....

One of the last things Don Pettit did before closing up shop for his return to earth this weekend was accept my invitation for the Arizona Science & Astronomy Expo.

It's on in the biggest way. don't know any other way.......

I've spoken with the Club president and he will add the Expo to our New Business section of the monthly meeting.

Thanks for heads up regarding Dr. Pettit. I've bring that up at the meeting.

Your name seems very familiar. Did you make a trip to Bullhead City to pick up a few scopes about three years ago?

Thanks again,

Bert

We met. Wes was my astronomy mentor. I have three of his Tele Vues, the Nagler and 2 Ethos.

You're familiar with the scope menagerie Wes had. I spent my early formative period viewing through those instruments.

You could say I grow up viewing through those 3 Tele Vues. Thanks for making the deal happen. Those eye pieces have great sentimental value to me - far beyond their monetary value.

Thank you,

Bert

Thanks for giving this a shot, Alan. I almost pulled tyhe trigger on NEAF this year but decided I could find a better use for the ~$800 it would cost me just getting and staying there. But this one, I'm gonna try to make. Tucson is way more familiar to me than NYC area (my folks lived there for 25 years). Hope to see you there!

Not really IMO. Anyone that knows the climate of that part of Arizona may well tell you May,June,July,August, September and most of October are not the time to come to the desert. I'd have to pass as well.

I think it's a great time of the year.

Winter is definitely the time to be in Tucson. Just ask any snowbird you know. Now is not the time to be here in the desert, believe me.

Phoenix and southern AZ is not the place to visit from around May till about October. If you are not used to the heat and crazy monsoon storms (especially in Tucson). The winter time in AZ is awesome though. I am excited to be coming home for this show!

New moon is the following Tuesday. It seems odd that they would schedule the show for dark of the moon weekend. Most shows avoid that unless they are trying to have associated star parties. It makes me have second thoughts about going.

The area around Tucson has decent dark skies so a related star party, say north of town where they do outreach would be a very tie in.

That time of year avoids the nasty winter storms that happen just a bit later so that is not a bad time.

When things line up right. I don't do outreach the way I did at first. Too many conflicting priorities - and that without a job getting in the way!

There are better (darker) sites than Catalina State Park within a short drive of the convention center.

Great question! I think we could volunteers to run the camera and walk around the show. But to get the equipment and the bandwidth and coordinate with CN might be a bit harder to do. I'm not sure how big a presence CN will have what with Astronomics own Grand Opening at the end of September.

Nope nothing to sell. Busy season at the office, middle of school, can't get enough people to go to sell. Going as an informational booth only with webcasts and such. I will be doing the walkthrough working on my film degree. It might make an interesting documentary. I never get to leave the booth at NEAF so it will be a different experience for me. I can discover it with the viewer at the same time.

Meteorite Panel with some of the worlds greatest rock stars

“Out of the Sky: How Meteorites Changed the World”

TOPICS:
•How does amateur/commercial meteorite hunting contribute to science?
•How do meteorite hunters and academic researchers work together to increase our knowledge of the field?
•Until the 1800s, the Roman Catholic Church denied the existence of meteorites, claiming Heaven was perfect and stones could not fall from the sky. This belief was shattered by the l’Aigle fall in France of 1803.
•What evidence is there that ancient peoples were aware of meteorites and possibly worshipped or revered them? Examples: Winona, Canyon Diablo, Henbury Craters.
•What techniques do meteorite hunters use to find these rarest of materials?
•Major impacts have PHYSICALLY changed the world. Examples: large craters, extinction events.
•How has the study of chondrules helped us understand the early days of the Solar System?
•What can meteorites tell us about the Asteroid Belt and its makeup?
•The concept of Panspermia: Do we believe life was brought to Earth, or possibly spread through the galaxy on, or in, meteorites.

SPEAKERS: (click names for Bio’s)
•Dr. Larry Lebofsky: Moderator
•Suzanne Morrison: Panelist

Imaging Workshop by Adam Block

Making Every Pixel Count Workshop

by Adam Block (see bio)
•Costs: The workshop is $875. It includes the accommodations, food and materials/content.
•Contacts: Any questions can be directed to ablock@as.arizona.edu
•Location: Mount Lemmon with me using the 32-inch telescope
•Date: Tuesday, November 6th through Friday, November 9th, 2012
•Space is limited!

ORDER TICKETS $875 per person includes, 3 nights accommodation and meals.

Learn how to produce stunning images of deep sky objects from Adam Block, a renowned imager whose skill with a CCD camera continues to inspire enthusiasts around the world. His images have appeared in numerous books, magazines, websites and television programs.

The workshop covers a full range of topics, from basic image aquisition and problem solving to compressing the dynamic range of the data for the best possible aesthetic results.

Whether you are just getting started with CCD imagery or have basic skills that you would like to refine, the “Making Every Pixel Count” workshop will help you produce better images. The workshop takes place over three consecutive days.

This is a hands-on presentation and you must provide your own computer so please note the system requirements.

Your experience begins with a captivating journey to the top of Mt. Lemmon with its “sky island” environment. Once you arrive at the SkyCenter you will receive a tour of the site including a description of these historical and active observatories.

You will then check in to your accommodations on the mountain and proceed to our newly refurbished Learning Center where most of the workshop activities take place.

The Day Before the Workshop

Before making the journey up to Mt. Lemmon we will visit Steward Observatory’s Mirror Lab—where LSST’s optics are currently being created! This is a rare opportunity to see where the largest telescopic mirrors in the world are being made. Refer to the agenda to time your arrival so that you can participate in this remarkable tour.

Day 1:

You will be given a workshop package in advance of your arrival with instructions on preparations to be completed at home including the download of software so that we can get under way quickly. Tailored to the individual needs of the participants, we will begin with understanding programs such as CCDStack to facilitate basic operations including image calibration, G2V color balance, identifying and correcting common imaging problems, and the foundations of LRGB and Ha blending techniques. We will continue into the evening hours. Should it become clear after the typical thunderstorms of the afternoon, we can adjourn to our refurbished dome and our new 32-inch Schulman telescope. It would be great to take some of our own fresh data to manipulate!

Day 2:

This day builds on the first day with more in depth manipulation of example data sets. This includes management of Photoshop layers and blending techniques. By the end of the this day you will be able to confidently produce both a deep sky and planetary image from scratch in a step-by-step, consistent and repeatable method used by the top imagers in the world. Again, if the weather permits, we can observe at the telescope!

Day 3:

We will complete any remaining examples and unanswered issues in the morning. Time permitting, we will discuss object oriented processing and contrast management. After a quick lunch, we will pack up and leave the mountain.

Sadly I learned today that the Tucson show is a "for profit" event being run by one of the organizers of NEAF. Most of these training sessions for us to learn have been run by non-profit public astronomy clubs. People invest countless hours of their personal time helping to share and help us learn this difficult hobby. When Astronomy shows stop being about public awareness and AP guys helping AP guys, I certainly won't support them with attendance. Thankfully PATS and AIC remain what they've always been, a public service to those of us with a passion for this hobby.

As far as I know every show is technically for profit, star parties included. I understand the feeling, but the event site needs money, the speakers need money, and all the rest of the money hopefully will cover the expenses. If not, then it comes out of the organizers pockets. Shows like this, NEAF, RTMC, PATS, WSP, TSP, BFSP etc, all need to happen if everyone wants the hobby to grow or even keep a beating pulse. People need to get excited about astronomy, and unfortuneatly excitement costs money. Getting a gathering place for thousands of people costs money. If there is some left over, then the organizers of the show should get paid a little something for investing their time.
Cloudy Nights costs me a ton of money each year. Hopefully we make it back in sales to the community, but believe me I have given much thought to having a "donate" button on site to help cover the cost. Would the fact that it might help pay the bills, and possibly provide us with a small amount of profit to upgrade the site be a bad thing? I don't have an answer for that.

For profit or not; if you are into a hobby and the attraction is worth your time and you want the hobby and vendors to stay for the long haul then we need to support them. Granted money does tend to ruin some hobbies; maybe some day ours will grow to a size where that would be a problem.

There are shows all over and they are not for profit. Vendors help pay for the event. This is no longer about astronomy and more about making a buck by putting on a show. It has the potential to hurt local astronomy clubs who's members devote their time and efforts free of charge. Vendors cannot attend every show and will only support a limited number. If an astronomy club cannot get enough vendor support, all their efforts to promote training and outreach will be lost. I hope to inform as many folks as possible. If I see a vendor who backs out of a local club's show and attends this instead,or any other commercialized event, they will no longer have my business. I've already decided to not attend Adam's intermediate CCDStack class.

The only correlation I can come up with is here and Astro-Mart. If people decide to not support or use the free service we provide to hobbyists, manufacturers, and curious people, but instead choose to pay for the services Astromart provides then I should no longer sell their product or continue to support their efforts? All that does is hurt the hobby on a whole.

In the current economy people have to make choices as to where their dollars go, just as you mentioned in your post. Obviously you are free to make your own decision, but the vendor has to make their own decision as well. There is only so much support that can go around. We try to do as much as we possibly can, but we can't always be in two places at once.

For example, you had Nebraska, Golden State, and Table Mountain all at the exact same time. I don't know how you would make a choice, but I assume you would make a choice on attendance and participation. I would hate to think if I had to make a choice of which star party to attend that my business would be hurt if I choose the wrong one due to the wish of a group to make a profit and have an even better show.

I wish everyone the best in making their club show as awesome as they can. I wish each show would draw 1000-2000 new people so the hobby can grow and still be around in 20 years. If some new blood doesn't start coming in telescopes will go the way of the Model Railroad. I remember when it use to be a come-one, come-all hobby. Now it just appears to be getting more and more exclusive. Large events like this are becoming more essential if we want to keep looking up.

NEAF has been running for decades and this hasn't been a problem, so I am a little surprised this is one now. I see one vendor in your equipment list that is not going to PATS, but is going to Tuscon. I just believe there is room for everyone to share their knowledge and promote the hobby.

I guess it is a no-win situation at times.

I'm not a vendor, nor associated with any. If you look me up in your system I buy from you. My last purchase was AstroDon LRGB filters. I'm not against Arizona having a show. What I see here is timing and attempt to hurt PATS with a for profit event. There are already several vendors that don't attend west coast shows, and I understand that. What I'm against is a losing support for a non profit event because a vendor can't afford to attend 3 shows all 2 weeks apart.
I actually think what Astronomics does for the community is great, that's why I try to make sure and spread some of my business to you. Astromart is pretty tough, I mentioned cloudy nights in an ad one time and got booted.

Totally get it, but the ASAE is in November. It is almost 7 weeks apart. We choose to go to it as it is closer to us. I know the date was picked so vendors would have time to recoup costs if they wanted to go to both. We are having an issue getting some of the folks at our open house due to the date, but we were handcuffed by an OU bye week. Maybe next year we will have a booth at both. You never know.

And how is this star party business going to work? TAAA doesn't have data. I'd think it would be neat if we could work on getting our act together for a small non-public star party in conjuction with this (yes, this is overlapping my other post). TAAA is really good at general public outreach but I know they also do smaller events.

But this event comes with what should be some of the best skies of the year. There really should be a chance to make gear do eveything it can without fielding questions about if it can see the astronauts' footprints on the Moon (if I had a dollar for every time...)

I plan to attend on Saturday, as I'll be in Tucson visiting my son that weekend. But I sure hope someone will organize an observing night for attendees somewhere within an hour or two drive from the event. No way I can bring my telescope, so I'd love to share someone else's views. I'm also willing to share gas and other expenses. (Sorry, I don't Facebook.)

We are very happy to announce that the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association will be hosting an evening Star Party event at their nearby Chiricahua Astronomy Complex.

More information about the evening event can be found at their website: http://tucsonastronomy.org/

Visit the TAAA booth at the ASAE event and sign up for a wonderful and educational experience.

No, data about the observing event can not be found on the TAAA site.

Click on your link and you'll see the problem.

The only observing mentioned is on November 3, and it'd be a little late to sign up for that on November 10.

Meteorite Panel

So you'd rather no one had an incentive to put together a show? It's not like they want the sort of money Donald Trump asks to have lunch.

It's a nominal amount of money in exchange for what it costs to set up a show, both in effort and attention. This narrative about people should just take time away from their families to entertain strangers and should have nothing to show for it is crazy.

Price out what attending a professional conference costs and you'll see what a for-profit event is all about.

don't you think it's strange that televue isn't listed as a vendor?

I'm getting a sense there's more of a back story to this then anyone is saying.

and of course I could be way of base but the more I read the more I see the possibilities.

As it turns out, there is a backstory:

NEAF is held in NY state, which despite its fame, is a long long way from most of the rest of the country. So, while NY based companies like TeleVue find NEAF to be quite convenient, vendors like Starizona are facing a trip all the way across the country to attend. As a result, they don't.

Interestingly enough, now that we are looking at an event far from NY, the converse appears to be happening.

It's the difference 2500 miles makes.

Actually, Starizona has attended at least one NEAF show. I first met Dean in person at NEAF in 2008, IIRC.

Vic Maris and the teams from OPT and Woodland Hills always make the trip from California to New York, too. I love to see them and catch up on the latest west coast gossip.

I think a lot of things are in flux due to the struggling economy.

I had planned to fly out to Arizona for the ASAE, but I'm grounded because of spinal surgery. I hope you guys have a wonderful show.

Ron

You're exactly right Danny, the problem is vendors only have so many events they can support. If Alan is sucessful at this venture astronmy club hosting an event will disappear. I guess if that's what people would rather have then that's what there will be. I can even understand the need. The days of store front astronomy shops is all but gone sadly. The part that concerns me is the imaging workshops that typically go along with astronomy club shows. Vendors are reaching their prime targets, and imagers benefit with low cost instruction from professionals. If this trend continues then Astronomy shows wouldn't be much different than the boat show each spring. Astronomy club shows do more by bringing folks into the club and giving resources to share. I'm all for promoting astronomy everywhere, just not when I see it hurting non profit club events. I guess in the end the participants will decide what they want. In a tough economy I can see why vendors want to reach out to try and build business.

I'd ask that all further responders in this thread will now simply focus on the upcoming event, and to what details this initial event may entail and to the possible upcoming events that the astro community at large can benefit from.

This thread isn't for the negativity as to this Astro Fair,or IMO any other comparison. Please start another separate thread for that negativity, if one is so inclined to do so.

Based on what I have heard from folks up to now, it sounds like no one attending ASAE is still looking for an observing opportunity. Either Adam Block's class or the two site/ three night TAAA event are meeting the needs for observing.

So, I'm closing this out- I am no longer working on such a venture. If you have general questions about the Tucson area, I am, of course, happy to help answer them.

With the blessings of Astronomics, I'm creating CN badge files for the Mod & Admin crew; I will be happy to build badge images for any CN member attending the ASAE.

The files are jpegs, and can be printed on any color printer.

In order to do this, I have a few requests:

1. I need a hard list of attendees ASAP. The only way to insert your avatars on the badges is to perform screen captures for each one, so there's some time involved. Also, I'm doing this on a 4 yr old laptop; it gets cranky when I work it too hard.
2. Make sure you like your avatar. Once I do the captures and create the badge images, that's it - I'm not going to have the time to make changes.
3. Please don't ask for format changes - this is the setup that was approved. We'd like to keep the badges uniform and recognizable.

If you're interested, post to this thread. Thx.

Thanks for the offer; however, I've been playing with several methods over the past few days, and the screen captures are actually easier that trying to resize & manipulate the original avatar photos. To paraphrase the comment I made in the Mod forum: "Sure, I can use the original photos - and the badges should be ready by Christmas."

Folks:

The deadline for badge requests will be Sunday, 28Oct. It does take me some time to build each badge, and then I have to send them off to the printers (in this case, Ron (rboe) and Steve (Watermaster)). I don't want to be putting badge images together as I'm on my way out the door for Tucson.
We will have some blank badges availabe; they'll have the CN header, and space to write your name. Either stop by the CN booth, or check with the guy wearing the cowboy hat (Ron)...

Fixed - but that doesn't help things much. Met Ron in person yesterday; I recognised him more from the motorcycle he was riding than from his avatar pic.

Maybe because he was wearing a helmet, and not a cowboy hat...

All Joe had to ID himself with was a cup of joe. Not helpful at a coffee place. Not helpful at all. To top it off he approaches me while I'm still on the bike to talk bike and point out I may be blocking him. With my new bike I get that a lot. So again, not helpful.

We NEED ID's.

Does anyone know if we'll have web access at the event? I'll assume we're not planning on printing up thousands of the generic CN badges, so we should hand them out to CNers only; if I can access CN, I can check for membership - or sign up new members...

I plan on showing up. I'll also have the 18" at the Saturday and Sunday night star parties at TIMPA. Fifteen minutes from home to TIMPA, 2 hours to CAC. Math works out for TIMPA for me.

And that RBOE guy is taller than his avatar. The hat will be visible above us normal sized folk.

Not entirely sure at this point. If there's room, we're hoping to have them available at the CN booth.

I'll post here as soon as we figure stuff out.

Make sure you talk with the guy in the cowboy hat, regardless - he's pretty cool.

And, yes - he's WAY taller than his avatar...

Just as an FYI for those not aware --

Joe Cipriano is a former moderator, and Ron/rboe is a former administrator. So they basically have authority (and do have permission) to run with the name badge thing.

Just in case anyone was wondering.

Per day. Also note that the Convention Center charges an additional buck for admission and IIRC $6 for parking.

As for Sunday , Veterans admission is free.

I agree Rich, this came up at work (the University) as well...there does not seem to be any intentional local marketing of this expo....word of mouth only.

I hope there is some marketing planned for here in Tucson as there are many amateur astronomers, space enthusiasts and those interested in general science who are not in the usual circles where this info is being shared (like CN), that would likely attend.

WOW... what in the world was I thinking? I should have looked here for some posts on the ASAE! I was reading the website info and wanting more of a "feel" of this event.

My wife and I might be there (pending empty seats), and please do not think I am spoiled, because what we do not pay monetarily- we pay for in anxiety. I did not note this event early enough to really plan it out, but what an excuse to go back to AZ and sunny skies! We have plans but my job does not allow me to make definitive plans, but I need to talk with many of you (and some vendors). What a better place than the South West!

They allowed the vendors to stockpile their merchandise in their warehouse prior to the show. Otherwise we wouldn't have had a scope to show, or we would've had to make the cross-country hike with our merchandise in tow, which isn't really high on either my or my wife's "bucket list" of things to do. ;-)

We're flying out Friday morning from Jersey and can't wait for the show - should be a great event!

I dropped in at the opening, just to pick up my badge and drop my wife Susan off for her shift at the TAAA hands on demonstration table, and I ended up staying about three and a half hours!

Ran into so many old and new friends. The hands on demos were upstairs, quite a distance apart from the main vendor floor downstairs. I must have done forty laps, lusting after all the astronomy essentials on display and sale. Some GREAT work being done at each of the setups. Had to give Steph a hug and say hi, waited in line (kind of slow getting off the ground) at the box office with Ron Boe, got my CN badge, and then my fifteen minutes of look around grew and grew. I can't wait until tomorrow, to see if Woodland Hills does in fact set up their Lunt 230mm (YIKES!) solar scope. $18,000 and you and three friends and a fork lift can carry it away.

So far I only have purchased a new planisphere from skyward_eyes (Kevin LeGore) at the Woodland Hills stand. Susan asked me if I had my Christmas list ready after my walkabout, I told here I had two items we could leave behind, pack up the rest of the downstairs.

The sky is looking better for the moment as I get ready to head over to get TIMPA ready for any hearty souls who want to do the eye candy thing.

Great start!!! Sorry, forgot my camera...

The demos are on the first floor. Go through the double doors, past the meeting rooms, make a left at the end of the hall, then a quick right, and there are a group of demonstrations and science presentations in the second last room on the right. Out of the way, but well worth the trip to see exhibits like TAAA doing demonstration kits from Night Sky Network, Lunar and Planetary Lab show and tell, several more great setups. My wife was working with kids on the birth and life of a star, and the how the Earth's atmosphere protects us from solar effects in the morning. I hope I remember my camera tomorrow to get shots of all the science going on.

Tom, Story won't be there. Geoff Notkin told me they asked him to take Story's spot. (this, after he does the meteorite panel in the morning! ). He's very entertaining though,if you've never heard him and have any interest.

I'm having a great time, wonderful seeing my NEAF friends that are here as well as meeting my southwest friends and making new ones. Also, Don Pettit, who ended today's speakers, was very enjoyable.

Good show!

Visited with Anthony at ADM, chatted with David Nagler at TV, spent a little time with Scott at ES, Markus at APM, talked to the gals from Lowell Observatory, etc, etc, etc. OPT and Woodland where there in force, selling seemed quite brisk.

Got around to asking all of of them how this initial show compares to others. In general:

Vendor participation about as large as PATS, crowds similar. Great comment since the LA basin is certainly larger than Tucson and the drive-downs from the Phoenix metro area.

Vendor participation about as large as NEAF, crowds about half of what NEAF sees. The point was made that of course, NEAF has been doing this for 20 or so years.

All the vendors I talked to were enthusiastic about the show and all of them saw it as an annual event they would attend. Several of them would buy larger booth space next time.

Seems like good news and a successful show!

Arizona Ken

Well, I'm sorry we missed the demos but I still enjoyed the Expo immensely. Have to admit that the cost of driving there and getting in was a little more than I expected, but I think next time I'll try to stash away a few $$, it'd be well worth it to take advantage of some of the great deals on equipment.

I only intended to do a quick walk around after dropping off Susan for her shift at the demonstration table, but I stayed three and a half hours and did about forty laps of the lower level, constantly meeting old and new friends, and glad I left the checkbook and credit cards at home. It was a pleasant surprise to run into Claude and Teri Plymate and Dean Ketelsen, plus several regulars from the Grand Canyon Star Party, and a dozen or more Cloudy Nights denizens. I have to return Sunday and see if Woodland Hills set up their 230mm Lunt solar scope. Just $18,000, three friends and a fork lift and you can haul it away!

Great show. We had a good time and aways enjoy being able to get out and meet some of our current customs and potential customers face to face. The bad part about being a vendor is that you don't end up with time to walk around or go to the talks. The good part is that I don't have to worry about spending money on any new goodies.

We'll be there again next year and look forward to it being even bigger and better.

Thanks to Alan and company for all their hard work putting it together and helping unload and load gear.

Wow what a show- Alan said that was 4 months setup time- he expects to do more with one year to go. The vendors were great- OPT really did well with the scope inventory they had on hand- I saw several large boxes go out.

Ed, I stopped by Deep Space Products, but unfortunately you weren't there at the moment.

I'm going to call the CN badges a complete success. Joe, thank you for doing them. A lot of people remarked on my CN badge- with a comment like, "I've seen a lot of those." I propose they should be a staple of future shows- folks were keeping track.

I got a chance to see how my time-lapse went- I have some ideas for improving that for a virtual show in the future.

Thank you to everyone for putting on the show.

I must thank the powers that be for this event. You gave me the opportunity to contact your exhibitor which I had many questions about his product. It was nice to see the example Rob Teeter provided there at the Expo. I was also lucky enough to be a guest at a local ad-hoc star party which one of the members had a Teeter Dob out there. So I was able to see a demo AND see a demonstration in the field. That was much better than I thought I would have. Thanks for the anxiety that you went through and thank you for your efforts. I thought it was a SMASHING success!

This years ASAE hit the ball out of the park and this was just the first show! Great job guys! Attendance and vendor presence was strong and even Sunday was steady all day. Celestron looks forward to supporting this event for years to come. The science aspect was an extremely smart move and attracted a brouder range of young children and more females which should open the doors to expose a new audience to the astronomical market. The telescope industry is a big family and if everyone sticks together and supports eachother, it will be even better. It was great to see all our friends again. Alan Traino, Andy Lunt and the staff, thank you for your wonderful support

Based on this ASAE, I highly recommend going to ASAE II in 2013.

I wish the schedule changes for Sunday had been shared better. There was an admin office right by the raffle desk, and laser-printed plain paper updates could easily have replaced the color folded schedules that were still being handed out Sunday morning.

Every speaker we saw was worthwhile, and some were real highlights:

The IDA meeting Saturday offered a wealth of knowledge to take home and share for added meaning at outreach in conversations by the eyepiece or in more formal presentations. I hope the IDA and ASAE meetings can coincide in future years too. We shuttled between ASAE and IDA to see Kevin Poe, Connie Walker, and Babak Tafreshi give informative and beautifully illustrated talks.

The CosmoQuest presentation by Dr. Pamela Gay was the coolest take-away activity, a bit like 'galaxy zoo' but for a huge store of lunar, planetary and asteroid imagery that needs review. I hope ASAE attendees spread the word about this set of opportunities for citizen participation in NASA solar system exploration.

Don Pettit’s talk was amazing on several levels, all the photos and videos, his science and engineering enthusiasm, and his descriptions of the inspiring sights and small practicalities of ISS living. We left impressed with the people NASA sends up to ISS.

Steve Ramsden’s talk began by explaining Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project and his tribute to deceased friend Charlie made for a moving Veteran’s Day story. There were great take-aways for daytime outreach to complement the night-time thoughts from IDA. Steve and his wife are good people for doing all they can to support education in Georgia and around the world.

The meteorite panel was another really nice surprise, we learned a lot from the panel, and left inspired to go hunting near home, especially since we took home one of the chondrite fragments that ‘Sonny’ had salted in the gravel planters outside the convention center. The meteorite gang was encouraging when answering questions, a nice bunch of people; and the scientist-collector collaboration of the panel was a good model for other fields. A new facet to the hobby for us - it’s pretty cool to handle a piece of an asteroid…

While the vending area was mostly just a ‘window shopping’ pass each day, there were some highlights:

• Gary Hands earned ‘good guy’ status in my book for a nice engaging conversation with my daughter while I worked on my hot dog.

• The IDA, CosmoQuest, Charlie Bates, Goddard and LPL booths were great for outreach materials and conversations. If you all are spending on the floor again at ASAE 2013, remember the T-shirts, books or cash-in-the-hat for guys like them... There were a lot more outreach info and activities aimed at kids, too, from U AZ and TAAA among others.

• It was nice to meet some vendors I only knew from decades of S&T ads. Craig and Mrs. Weathermax had a Panoptic at ASAE price I could not refuse, and took time to answer my green laser questions. The Vixen owner was an upbeat guy and had all the mounts, the Polarie, and Japan-made scopes out.

The amount of gear on display from all manufacturers and vendors was overwhelming.

The CN booth was either unmanned, or busy with a big crowd and I didn’t but in. It was nice to see a familiar Texas face from past White Sands star parties on the exhibit floor.

I hope ASAE 2013 brings back the IDA, Astronauts, and other great speakers.

I also hope all is well back home for Alan Traino – apparently his family had no power back home while he was in Tucson running ASAE.
