A simple ya if you want to attend a group CN supper event after the event. If we keep the chatter to the other thread it will be easier to count mouths.

OK, so let's assemble some options we want in the Supper Poll:
(1) Old Pueblo Grill
(2) Pinnacle Peak Steakhouse
So what others would several of us want to see on the list? I propose they have to be proposed and seconded by someone else to be in the Poll.

We'll also need to nail down a time. Seems a bunch of CNers are planning to hit one of the star parties, and considering the drive time to CAC, they'll probably want to eat on the early side (4:00 p.m. -ish). I'd much rather eat early with everyone than exclude anyone due to scheduling constraints. Those not going to one of the star parties can always stay and socialize over adult beverages...

Side note: It's probably going to be easier to get everyone seated together the earlier we eat. Saturday night + U of A homecoming + tourist season may make later seatings hard to come by. Heck - if it's too early for some, we can always call it a really late lunch; those of us not hitting the star parties can always meet up later for an 11:00 p.m. "breakfast"...

That's a thought, but on the other hand, what about being able to stay for the length of the event on Saturday? And it also depends on the location- it'll take a little while to get over to Pinnacle Peak.

Point made.
We may want to make the "big" group event lunch - but even then, there's really no available "window" in the speakers' schedules.
My day is pretty much open, so I'll go along with whatever the group decides on - although I'll put a vote in for OPG, as it's a fairly short drive from ASAE.

Hi Rich,
We're getting our threads criss-crossed. I'm making the same post to the Star Party thread.
It looks to me like most CN folks want to get together Sat Eve for dinner and socializing. At or after 5pm seems to be the best time for a dinner rendezvous. And, there are just a few folks wanting to go to TAAA-CAC star party that night. I'm glad to host a group to the star party Saturday night. I remember someone said they were going to dark site on Friday and another said Sunday. I can't speak for them about "hosting a group"...but, remind folks, there are star parties other nights.
Let's poll folks for these 2 scenarios, and plan to get together at Old Pueblo Grill. Those going to star party can rendezvous earlier, say 3:30 - 4:30, have a bite, and as the "in town" group starts arriving around 5pm, everyone will have time to meet and greet. The star party group could begin heading out about 5:30 as the in town group is gathering for their dinner. Two groups, one place, a little overlap, and from there, "the night is ours." The star party group can head south on Alvernon to I-10 and be on their way to the dark site quickly. OPG is 10 minutes from downtown convention center, and 10 minutes from I-10. I would probably head back to Tucson around 2am. But, I'm flexible.
I'll be glad to contact OPG, see if they can accommodate us with these scenarios and I'll get a reservation if this works for everyone. If they have a good idea what we want to do, we won't hit some unexpected snag. I have a star party reservation for 1 car, 4 people and so far just one passenger (looking forward to seeing you, Shneor) and room for 2...

I've never been to OPG, but from the Google image, parking looks a bit tight. I'll be happy to play Designated Driver from ASAE to OPG and back; I've got room for three passengers - 4 in a pinch. I wasn't planning on drinking, anyway, and I'm staying on Oracle at Ina; driving people back to the ASAE parking lot ain't that far out of my way - I'll just hop on I-10 N and take the Ina exit.

Oracle may be faster; it's a straight shot north whereas I-10 takes you a few miles west; and then you get to back track on Ina.

I-10 is only a shortcut to El Paso or Phoenix. It helps very little in-town. I'm told that was on purpose, because folks were afraid an efficient highway loop would make the town grow too much.
The extended dinner at OPG sounds like a good idea to me- as long as we can talk OPG into it (I'm guessing this won't be a problem).

The forecast has shifted again- Saturday and Sunday are looking clear, but Friday has rain. I had been hoping to take my kids to the TIMPA star party on Friday. So, I may now be in an early group for Saturday. Better than losing Saturday and Sunday to rain, though.

So we're looking at about 14 folks at the Old Pueblo Grill.
Time wise I'd favor something in the 5:30PM time frame. Early enough to avoid the supper rush, late enough to have lunch taken care of.
Any objections or suggestions?

Well, as of right now, it seems that the Saturday star parties may be a washout. It would be cool to get everyone together at once. Might want to push it back to 6pm for those who want to hear the day's last speaker.
Still need to keep the early/late seating option open, just in case the weather doesn't go sideways.

OPG is tasty for sure...very excellent food I think...but if your quest is for the ultimate cheese enchilada, you should head to some Mexican places...
Lots of good ones...I like the Mosaic Cafe personally, about 15 minutes from the expo...and right behind the expo is El Minuto cafe which is pretty tasty as well and a 2 minute walk...
Darn, now I need to go get some lunch!

Ok, so it looks like we have no hope of observing on Saturday. I'm hoping Sunday is clear the way it is forecast.
So, I suggest it is time to lock in on the 6:00 dinner time. We need to finalize the restaurant. Given the only requirements left are it should be easy to get to for in-town travel and have good food, I think Old Pueblo Grill is the best option. There are multiple routes there, it's good, and the location is central to the city.
Pinnacle Peak is a ways out, but has good steaks with goofy fun. From some of the discussions around here, I tend to wonder just how goofy this group could possibly be, but there it is.

Thanks, Rich, for taking initiative.
If the star party is cancelled or rained out, it really makes having 2 groups over-lapping unnecessary. Unless the forecast drastically changes, I'm good for one group, one dinner time and scrapping Saturday night star party plans. I don't know when TAAA will make an announcement. My passengers to the star party may want to have dinner with the group, or make other arrangements. Figure out by this evening?

Tonight is probably a good deadline. We may run into reservation problems if we wait much longer - and OPG is probably "in range" for the U of A homecoming crowd. At this point, we may want at least one fall-back restaurant.
Do we have a final headcount?

Make it so. We had 14 minus 2 cancelations puts at 12, but we may pick up a few folks at the show when they find out what a fun lot we are to be around.

If the star parties are cut down like it looks like they will be, this dinner will be highlight for Saturday evening.

So - who's running point on this? Need someone (preferably local) to make the reservation. We also need a backup restaurant in case OPG is booked (which it may be, at this late hour). I'd suggest PP as an alternate, although something closer to the Convention Ctr would be better.

I'll go by OPG personally and speak with manager noon Friday about taking a group of 16 to 22 folks, perhaps 3 tables. They usually like their patio for large groups. But, not if raining. If this doesn't look promising, I'll head over to PP.

Especially when they find out the weather forecast for Saturday's star party is very "iffy" at best. Here in Phoenix, they are forecasting cloudy with showers tomorrow, especially in the morning, and of course Tucson will be next in line as the weather is moving sort of northwest to southeast.
Dinner will be fun and I'm looking forward to it!

OPG manager will call me. I asked if they could accommodate 14 for dinner at 5 or 6pm? Outside seating would be easy. But, he is aware it might rain. In which case, he is already very booked indoors. And, this late and at that time may not be possible. What will be the fall back plan?
******UPDATE*****UPDATE******UPDATE******UPDATE********
we have a reservation for 14 at 5:30, Saturday nite, indoors...and, if weather permits,
we have the option of outdoor patio dining

Glad to help, Joe. I asked manager (Ryan) about last minute add-ons or cancellations. I would like to confirm with him about 2pm tomorrow our count. We are definitely good for 14 folks, as far as I have heard.

I am go for this plan, Paul. We all need to thank you thick for going and getting this set up with OPG.
For everyone else, yes, this means you'll be going to Old Pueblo Grill. That's good.

Many thanks, Paul, or as they say in Hawaii, "Mahalo nui loa!"
Looking forward to dinner then, at the OPG! I'll be starting my trip down in about twenty minutes.

I'm taking a small group out to CAC dark site (weather seems to be ok enough) and will miss dinner. But, hope everyone enjoys themselves. You guys are good for 14 guests, and the hostess has my number.

Sorry I never made the supper, the amazing presentation by Mr. Pettit never wrapped up till just before 6. I figured by the time I actually found OPG, everyone would be finished eating :-(.
I'm glad to have met a few of you today, and hopefully I can put a few more faces to names tomorrow.

Alright...it was a bummer missin' dinner. But, I gotta know, how was it? Great time I hope. We got started a little late going out to the dark site. Drove past at least once. But, well worth it when we got there. Oh, and the Border Patrol pulled us over in the middle of nowhere...

If we can find something close; within walking distance like the Congress Hotel was (and it might do, hard to tell) then folks that were in talks could get there if they ran late. We could supply maps before hand too.

Someone's going to have to be creative to figure it out downtown. Maybe we should just have a CN Forum on the schedule.
