I was almost going to skip the Rosette (NGC2244) this year because I've been finding the HA targets somewhat tedious to image with my unmodded camera. Then I realized that I should give my Celestron LPR/UHC filter a try to see if it would make a difference. I THINK it might have Either that, or this HA target is fairly bright. THe individual frames were really dark so I could have exposed for longer by my alignment wasn't that great. After processing I was totally surprised with the results.
Details: 3min exposures totalling 1.5hrs, ISO800, Canon 40D unmodded, Sky-Watcher Equinox 80mm, autoguided on the CG5-GT

Great shot. Nice to see its possible with an unmodded camera. I always skip it too because my first try didn't show any nebula at all. Will definitely be trying again ASAP.

Great job Kerry! You grabbed a lot in 1.5 hours total.
I just picked up an Orion CCD to guide with using PHD(WindowsXP). I hope the combo guides as well as yours appears to.

Just curious why you think you should've left the reducer off? Anyway this is another excellent shot that gives us non-modders hope.

Thanks again everyone. So glad it gives many of you unmodder types hope It has definately given me hope. I think I'll be using this LPR filter more often when shooting HA. Too bad I don't have more clear nights or even more time to test it out.
Eric, I did see those pics that you posted Thanks again!!
Kenny, if I took the f6.3 focal reducer off of my 6in SCT (guide scope) it would have given me a higher focal length of 1500mm therefore in theory giving me some improved accuracy in guiding.

Yes shots like this do give us hope , nice work on that shot.
Do you think that the LPR/UHC filter offers the best bang for the buck in a 2" or is there another anyone could recomend.

Definitely gives us unmodded cam guys hope! Just need longer subs and lots of them.
I'll try this target with the IDAS LP2 filter and 8-10 minute subs if I can get the mount working good enough.
Well done, Kerry!

Stunning shot Kerry! Can't believe that's an unmodded camera, there's tons of the faint red stuff in the outer "petals". Fantastic work.

Unmodded Canon cameras do a good job on red nebulas. I have to use a broadband filter because of light pollution, but I won't hesitate to shoot even a dim nebula with my XTI. Here are the results:
http://cheapskate-astro.net/nebulae.html
Cheap optics and lousy bright skies are my limiting factor.

Nice stuff Eric, shows that processing has a big part in it also. Kerry, the guiding looks pretty good to me, a FF would help with the corners. How did you process?

Wow thanks everyone! I never expected this kind of response Eric the pics on your site definately confirm that it is possible... so I guess part of the key is to make sure you use a broadband LPR filter.
Lawrie, for processing I stacked all my lights, darks and flats in Deep Sky Stacker, then I post processed in Photoshop using multiple layers. I start out with a basic levels adjustment and then follow with several curves adjustment layers (normal, luminosity, colour). I ran some noise reduction and on the jpeg version using Noels tools for horizontal banding, space and deep space noise. The nice thing about this nebula is that the dynamic range was not that high so processing was not too bad. HTH
