Comet pass between M42 and Horse Head
      #3365177 - 09/30/09 12:12 AM

Inspired by others here, I noticed a favorable framing early Monday morning of Comet 217P/Linear. It was right in between the Horse and the Sword.

So I grabbed my AstroTrac rig and headed up to my club's dark site in Atoka, OK at 1:00am, started shooting at 3:30am, finished at 5:30am, and drove back home -- whew! It was an adventure. My wife already thinks I'm crazy, so why not?

Here is the result:

John:

Great overview of the Orion-complex with all famous nebulas. And right in the middle a "wanderer" of the solar system.

Perfect!

Thanks folks! It is really fun to catch these little "events" where you have a limited opportunity. I've already put in my order for more and bigger comets

And thanks again to Hiro and others in this forum for alerting me to this comet!

Thanks so much for your comments

Although I do a lot of CCD imaging, I must say that I am constantly amazed at what can be done with a simple DSLR and camera lens (this forum is full of great examples)!

This is one of the most outstanding photos of this region I remember, because of all the pinpoint stars. It looks even better in black and white.

One thing you you could do as an improvement is process to eliminate the trailing in the comet. If this is a stack of images - then this is easy to do

Hey Tonk, thanks for your comet comment

Yeah, I might try that. I thought about doing a pass and registering on the comet head (instead of the stars) and compositing the two -- but I kinda liked the comet trailing, making it more pronounced and seeing its movement (especially since it is so small in frame).
