A rare clear frosty night and attempt to capture as much as possible intermitently over next 6 hours via piggybacked ETX-70 OTA mostly with homemade focal reducer in place.
First Nova Vul#2 low in west at twilight then comets Holmes and Tuttle high in southwest. Later tried for 12BLY range quasar in Lynx and finished about midnight with revisit to Horsehead [below] and first visit to Rosetta Neb in Mon - no filters used and all pics via 3-20m exposures in 30s subs autostacked via camera - great fun

Here's grav-lensed quasar APM 08279+5255 field in Lynx eg the marked mag 15.4 'star' @ 12BLY - only a tiny dot but pretty amazing for the little ETX-70

Awhile since Comet Holmes recorded - it continues to expands to over 80' across and gets ever fainter

Comet Tuttle moves noticeably in this 5min exposure [in 30s subs] tracked on the comet nucleus

Here's the first shot of the evening [Jan 5] eg 2007 Nova Vul#2 [=V459Vul] - this is the best 30s frame and not spoilt by drifting cloud low in west after dusk - its stellar penetration is almost as good as my shot of Jan 2 in 3min exposure

Many thanks Chris, Zach, Todd, Max and UnkAstro for your interest Here's the final shot from Jan 5 eg Rosetta Nebula in Mon which due to its faintness proved almost [but not quite] beyond the ETX-70 no filters used but note the dark ribbons of obscuring dust including the 'Y' above the central stars .....and now to process last night's goodies for Jan 7

Here's a 5m shot [10x30s subs] of the Beehive Cluster M44 from last night it's processed as a negative to highlight the faintest stars and amazingly a few tiny background galaxies referenced from Megastar - those circled in pink have overlaying stars of comparable brightness and unresolved and therefore doubtful with this tiny aperture

Here's two globulars and galaxy. NGC 2905 in Leo is my favourite bright galaxy that didn't make the Messier List; NGC 2419 is the Intergalactic Wanderer and M79 in Lepus below Orion on my first 'visit'

nytecam, your images are inspiring. I've been strictly a visual observer but your amazing shots have been wooing me to the "dark side." If I take up AP it will be your fault, sir.

Hi Mathteacher - I image through necessity as my skies are so light polluted that I'm losing maybe 2 to 4 magnitudes compare to a dark site whilst my cam cuts through the muck some 5 magnitudes fainter than I'd see from a dark site through a same scope - so it's an obvious no-brainer route
I used to contribute DSO [my passion] to the CN DSO forum until they recently barred imaging and made it exclusive visual [wonder why?] whilst the DSLR/CCD forums are a mishmash of pretties and I don't do pretties
I was seduced by the 'dark side' over a decade and half ago during the photofilm era when reviewing for Astronomy Now mag the first CCD to come to UK eg SBIG ST-4 guider/cam. My buddies were not over impressed with my DSO results coming from my 18" Newt but amazed when I told them I'd used a 4-1/4" Astroscan with only 1/18th the light grasp The rest is for me history. Rant over - here's a new but now routine Horsehead in 6min exposure and colourised

Wow Maurice, you've been busy since I last checked in on your "ETX-70 sees" thread! I think I spent a full 20 minutes this morning (and that's a lot for me lately) gazing at the great string of images you've taken over the last few days. Some beautiful and deep shots in there. Always a pleasure. Like mathteacher (above), I'm also worried that I may be lured someday to the dark side thanks to your incredible work.
Although you don't necessarily need them, clear skies to you,
Dale

Thanks Dale for your interest Last night at the club's monthly meeting following a talk on the Cassini Mission by Jerry Workman, I did a short PowerPoint presentation of these recent images called DSO imaging from suburbia with ETX-70 and it was well received.
