ETX60 versions
      #2203371 - 02/19/08 04:48 PM Attachment (42 downloads)

Today I received another ETX60. This one is for my sons best friend to use when he's over, and also as a backup.

But I noticed that they are different.

The scope I received today has no flip barlow, the focus knob is in a different location and the forks and the base are shorter.

How many different models or versions of this scope did meade make?

As far as I know those are the two ETX60s in existence. The short fork is the ETX-60-AT which as you'd noticed lacks the barlow and angled focuser.

The newer ETX-60-BB has the new back cell w/barlow and vertical focus which can also be found on the ETX-80-BB. The longer forks are also from the ETX-80 as the scopes now pivot closer to the front of the tube.

There also once existed an ETX-70-EC which is an ETX-70 OTA on a ETX-90 base. That mount has the hardstops and non rotating control jacks.

Theye may also be two slightly different EXT-60BBs; the originals had the ETX-blue tubes, the later ones look like they have silver or gray tubes (possibly the DSX color).

We have a clear sky tonite so I had to go outside and play. I discovered something about this old (new for me) scope.

This older version allows me to use long barrel EP's and a long barrel Barlow. I guess it's because it doesn't have the flip barlow like my other ETX.

Now all I have to do is get one of those flexi cables for the focus knob, dang!! that's a terrible place to put a focus knob.

Thankyou folks, for the info on these little beauties

There is a fix for the focusing knob that cost $12. See here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Telescope-EZ-Focus-For-Meade-ETX-Telescopes_W0QQitemZ290208192137QQihZ019QQcategoryZ74926QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
It would then be even better than the new version as there would be less scope shake during focusing. This fix doesn't work on the newer ETX 60 BB's.

I have seen the newer version in both blue, and DSX silver. Both of the ones I have are the DSX silver, which hides finger print smudges on the OTA much better than my ETX 80.

In reference to the focus cables for the older ETX 60's, has anyone come up with a solution for the new models?

rseven:
thanks for the link, that seems like a reasonable price to pay to correct this annoying issue. I might even buy 2.

astrowolf:
no I don't know of a fix for the newer model. I don't see a set screw like the older model has.
So maybe it's glued or maybe pressure fitted??
I'm not sure.

1_old_dog,
If there is no set screw on the focus knob, then it might just be the same as on the 80. I purchased a flexi cable from CNC Supply ( www.cncsupplyinc.com ) It is pressure fitted indeed. Try and contact Robert, I think was his name and he was extremely helpful, and ask him for advice. My 80 no longer has that terribly annoying vibration in the OTA when I focus.
On another note what I needed to do was move the knob from right to left with a wiggle while pulling up.

Contact him first!!!!

will do.
thanx for the info.

Update:
I emailed CNC and they just got back to me.
He confirmed your directions on how to remove the knob.
Now I can order 2 flexi cables.

once you put them on..leave em on.I thought I would jus remove them until ready to view again this way it wouldnt get crunched in the storage box, but it wont come off. At least now I know it aint going no where, or could get lost!!

So, the focus knob on the newer versions are just press fitted? I've tried pulling one off on one of my ETX60's, and was afraid i'd break it, so, I quit trying before I messed it up.

me too, give it time......let your fingers rest (my thumb and forefingers were turning red and getting chafed) all the sudden it will just pop off. I aint MAKING you take the chance you'll snap it off though, but if it doesnt have any set screws, that tells me its pressure fitted, just remember there is a tiny bit of glue in there, that needs to be broken.

I have one of the newer Ext60AT BB's.Is it normal to have to enter the time everytime you turn it on?I dont have to on the Autostar on my DS2114.A little different software I guess.

Must be something in the software a little different.Handbox looks identical to my handbox on the DS2114 though.Guess I'll have to live with it.Kind of a pain to have to enter the time EVERYTiME ya turn it on.When ya turn it on it also ask for Daylight Savings(yes or no) and the Date. But they both stay where ya put them. You just have to hit enter to verify. But the time always has to be reset.

I believe your DS2114 ATS-TC (TC = time chip) has the internal time chip that keeps time, therefore not requiring you to enter it each time.

I owned a DS2114 for a couple of weeks, and, yes, it has an internal time chip with a small coin battery that keeps up with the time and date. My ETX 80 BB, that I just got earlier this week, also has the internal time chip and coin cell battery, and, it's base is identical to the ETX 60 BB's.

I wish they made a 497 handbox with the TC - I'm sure it would be very popular

UPDATE
Guess I cant get along with it.Something wrong.Tracks for a while then points straight up,lol.Sometimes, say you have it on M42...then tell it to go to Saturn...it heads off in the right direction then points at the ground.Lunnier than a pet coon,as my Dad used to say, lol.Gonna call Meade tomorrow.
