I ordered one from telescopes.com, but didn't realize they were out of stock, so I'm not sure when they will ship. It was the same price (except no free shipping), looked like a good deal to me.

Yep, I got one and I ended up returning it. It was terrible; it would barely thread onto the OTA and then drop right off at the slightest touch. My retailer put it down to cheap and nasty Chinese manufacture.

Of course, it will still function perfectly well as a dew shield, just be prepared to have to tape it on there.

I don't care for these as to me they look too wide and not deep enough to provide good protection. I've made my own using 2mm thick black foam rubber sheets from a craft store. I just used hot melt glue to bond two shets together with a lap seam, wrapped this around the tube and bonded it again. I then slipped it off and bonded the inner seam. The result is a lightweight dew shield hat fits snuggly to the tube.

I've got a similar one for my little-bitty ETX60. Wouldn't want this for the 125, though. One of the beauties of the 125 is its portability, and a solid dew shield like this is just likely to get smushed on vacation. For me, an AstroZap Flexishield, which can be stored flat, is the answer. Course it is VERY easy to make one out of easily available materials.

I used the 2mm foam also, but I used velcro on both seams. It comes apart and fits flat into my eyepiece case. I think the foam was $0.29 a sheet. THAT price is right!

I'd like to know more about the foam. What section of the store was it in...what was it next to? I looked at Walmart in the craft section, but they're limited. Thought I'd look at the local Hobby Lobby. I might cancel my order for the Meade shield if I can find the foam. Thanks.

I would try a local craft store. It is surprising the sort of bits and pieces you can find for makeshift this-and-that you find there.

Hardware store might also be a place for materials of this type.

The last couple of sheets I bought I found in the sewing supply section at Meijer's. I like the Velcro idea, I'll have to try that.

I just found some at Hobby Lobby. It is 12x18" 2mm Funky Foam. I Hot glued one seam and used velcro on the other. Doesn't look too bad and the foam was only 79 cents a sheet.

Yeah I have it, It screws on just fine, and has never fallen off. when you want to store it, just turn it around and slide it over the scope, and it still fits in the case. My only complaint is that I wish it came with a cap, I use one of those elastic kitchen bowl covers intead to keep dust off my lense.

I cheated and got the Astrozap flexible shield. At first I was somewhat anxious about how well it would work. But it has done a good job so far. Hasn't obscured the field of view from what I can tell.

I really like the homemade foam one, so I went ahead and canceled my order for the Meade. I can use that $34 for something else.

Sorry I just caught up on the posts again. I got my foam from the craft section in Wal Mart...glad to hear you found it and the cheapo shield works well for you. I'm not known for great ideas, but every so often...

Let's see if we can spend that $34 for you!

Could you give me the dimensions that you cut the foam? I just want to make sure that I get the same wonderful results that it appears you get from the "el-cheapo" dew shield you've created.

In advance, thanks!

The foam I got came in 12"x18" pieces. I left it 12" and cut a 3 3/4" strip that I overlapped and hot glued to a full sheet. Then added a strip of velcro along the entire length where it fits snug around the ota when I pull it tight and fasten the two ends. It would work better if I'd have cut the add on strip a little smaller. I think I'm going to trim the un-needed part past the velcro. Works great! jgraham saved me about thirty bucks!

Okay, I just trimmed it to fit better. It measures 12x19" and is fits great! You can slide it up or down the tube to fit your needs.

I have nothing against ingenuity and resourcefulness when it comes to making you own accessories, but I'm a big believer in esthetics, It should look well and be functional.
Would you replace the hood of your car with a table cloth? of course not. Thats my biggest complaint with the foam wrap dew sheilds, sure they work, but they look like a piece of cheap foam hanging off the end of a beautiful telescope.
Just my humble opinion.

I know what you're saying and I'm usually pretty picky about that sort of thing too, but I really don't think the foam one looked bad at all. Now the green cardboard school folder that I was using is a different story. If the Meade dew shield came with a nice slip on dust cover, I'd buy one asap. I get nervous every time I screw the heavy stock dust cap on and off. It's so close the the lens, I'm afraid I'll slip and do some permanent damage.

I know exactly how you feel. If I leave my scope out of its case for any long periods, I leave the dew shield on and put one of those elastic kitchen bowl covers over the end of the sheild to keep my optics protected.

True, but beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. If you can find the 2mm foam rubber in black and large enough to make one from a single sheet with only one seam (which you can hide on the under side) it doesn't look bad at all.

It tends to be equipment currently owned, but it can be anything. It's sometimes helpful to see what someone's using or has experience with. For example, I sometime's get emails about the fact I have both an LXD75 N6 and SN6, and a Phillips SPC900NC and a Meade LPI. So it can be useful.

In my case, it's a list of things that I probably should sell... Or at least half of it. Our house is starting to get crowded and my wife is giving me the look. I really should let her have some space back...she's a peach.

A late entry in this thread but I've been away for awhile. Of all the accessories I've bought for my ETX 90 the one I like best (and which sadly isn't made anymore) is an Astrozap sliding hard dew shield. It is beautifully made, shiny black, and lives on the tube, simply sliding out when needed. A little expensive but I've never regretted it. So why write about a discontinued product? I noticed that Shutan Camera has a very similar looking product here for the 125s and wondered if anyone has sprung for one of these?

The ETX-125 that Frank let me try out came with the hard plastic Meade Dew Shield. It does not thread on very well at all.

I bought a flexible Astrozap Felt Lined dew shield for my ETX-80.And if I end up getting to purchase this ETX-125 I will certainly replace the Meade dew shield with the Flexible AstroZap felt lined dew shield.

And considering the price is around $30.00 for the AstroZap,it is a tremendous bargain for its performance. dew shield
