Pages: 1 | 2 | (show all) wakk0 member Reged: 01/08/13 Just got a EXT125EC       #5661488 - 02/04/13 10:42 AM Edit   Reply   Quote Quick Reply   Finally I got EXT125 despite the reviews of the problems but then again there are others with it that had absolutely no problems with it. The seller was very thorough on how to take care of it and aligning it properly...he loves this scope but has too many. The motor sounds good..nothing out of the ordinary. It is pretty nose heavy tho. It only has a 26mm and 2x telenegative. I've read that Dr Clay prefers to use a 15mm with 2x barlow the most. I'll need to get a power supply and dew shield for sure. Its been cold and snowing here so I have not gotten my first light yet. In the meantime I can study the scope and its functions. Any recommendation for eyepieces or accessories? I want to start out small and not just buy the lens kit because I might not even use them all. Put a $25 eyepiece in a $1,500 scope and get a $25 view. If you have a local astronomy club, maybe someone there has a Televue Panoptic 24 or other premium, wide angle 1.25" eyepiece that you can try sometime at a club star party. The pleasing, panoramic views will definitely get you hooked. Back when I had an ETX-125, the Pan-24 was my default eyepiece for just about everything. I've owned one for a number of years and it's certainly a great scope with fine optics. ... and yes, you don't have to buy expensive eyepieces to enjoy the full potential of this scope. However, not expensive doesn't mean cheap, poor quality eyepieces. It generally refers to quality eyepieces with a simple lens design utilizing a minimum number of optical elements ... which translates into a lower purchase price than the expensive multi-element, wide/flat field design, exotic eyepieces. For planetary observing ... which the Maksutov optical design excels in ... a simple, quality Plossl eyepiece will provide excellent high power views that in most cases will be superior to the more expensive eyepieces. In fact ... out of the dozen or so high power eyepieces I've tried in my ETX-125 ... the very best views of the moon and planets are with my old-style, smooth-side, Circle NJ TeleVue Plossls (10.5mm(181X) and 7.4mm(257X)) ... used price ~$50 Good Luck with your new scope ... it will provide a lifetime of enjoyable observing. I also bought an extra hand controller just in case. The flexi-focus is a good accessory too. I bought that scope when it first came out in 1990something, I used that scope quite a bit. The one eyepiece that I loved and used most was a 14mm Nagler, I know it might be out of your budget right now but it gave amazing view. It was a little heavy so the AC adapter was used. Haven't had first light yet For the 14mm Nagler.. what did you use it to view mostly. Some people are happy with their 15mm and 32mm. I will read about the 14 Nagler. If there is just one eyepiece to get even an expensive one what would it be? Loved it, Saturn, M objects or just star hopping. Everything is crisp and clear to the edge. Another plus is that it is a 1.25 and 2 inch so if you get a larger scope you can take advantage of the 2". Now I am using the Celestron Ultima series 8mm and 32mm 70deg FOV and I am pretty happy with the optics but they really don't compare to the Nagler. My next wide FOV will probably be in the Ethos series but at 600+ I am going to take a little time till I pull the trigger on that one. The Ethos would not work on your scope because of the weight of the eyepiece I think. I not an expert on optics but that was my experience. Guessing here but what I think he is saying - the weight of the eyepiece puts enough load motors that the batteries could not provide enough constant voltage. Motors straining = voltage dips = scope computer has issues. When he powered the scope via the AC adapter (instead of batteries), the voltage issues went away. Is there a significant difference between S5000 and S4000? I read somewhere (maybe here) that there was only slight difference and S4000 cost less. I may look into the 24mm SWA or UWA?
