I guess I am the only person here who will never own a Nagler eyepiece - it's just too "bandwagony" for me..

Well I do own the 2.5x Powermate. And soon I think, a Paracorr. And one day, I WILL own an NP127, the best telescope on the planet.

Me - complete sets of Meade 5000 UWAs, 4000 Plossls, and University Optics classic Orthoscopics. And that's all I need, ever, barring catastrophe.

Updates - from my seat on the bandwagon....

The case is nearly full, it has one 1.25" spot open and I have a plan for it.....

To fill up the 2" side (nature abhors a vacuum you know...) I picked up a couple of old, out of style. stale, clearly inferior, nearly useless, yesterday's news, pedestrian, old hat, Type II Naglers, the 20mm and the 12mm. Gosh, they're so old that photons will hardly pass through them... But they are a perfect match for my Old Eyes.

Here is the revised list:

1.25" Stuff

Tele Vue Plossls, 7.4, 10.5, 13, 17, 21, 26, 32, 40.
NEW* Smart Astronomy Long Eye Relief Planetary 6mm
Tele Vue Barlows 1.8x and 2.5x
Ez Laser Colimator
Astrosystems Lightpipe
Scope Stuff Cheshire
Generic Barlow set up with mask for barlowed laser collimation
Astrosystems Autocollimator
Meade 26mm Plossl with Crosshair
Various Color Filters
Lumicon OIII Filter
Lumicon UHC Filter
Variable Polarizer

2" Stuff

William Optics UWAN 28mm
NEW* Tele Vue 20mm Type II Nagler
Tele Vue 16mm Type II Nagler
NEW* Tele Vue 12mm Type II Nagler
Tele Vue 9mm Type I Nagler
Tele Vue Paracorr
GSO 2x Barlow
Orion Ultrablock Filter
GSO Diagonal

I've always wanted a nice matching set of quality eyepieces. Alas! I've ended up with a hodgepodge of eyepieces that all fit into this huge pluckfoam aluminum case. But, if you gotta know....... And, I really need to get rid of some of these. If you know anyone that is short of cash and needs some reasonably priced (free!), reasonable quality eyepieces, I'd be willing to donate.

Thanks. None yet. I bought one of the first 13E's, then TV changed the housing to make them more bv friendly. I'm still a little peeved about that.

That's because each eyepiece serves as dominant a role in the quality and versatility (or specialization) of your optical train as does your telescope itself. However, even the most expensive premium eyepiece (Naglers, Pentax, etc) are apiece, much cheaper than a premium telescope of any type, except perhaps in small spotting scope sizes. So yes, a 13 Ethos or 26T5 Nagler seem expensive on the order of $600 USD new, but consider what each give you compared to what you can get in the way of a $600 telescope (before any eyepieces, mounts, etc). Such a bargain! Looked at that way. You get a tremendous amount of bang for your buck when you add another good eyepiece to your lineup that does anything (magnification, TFOV, AFOV exit pupil, contrast, etc) noticeably better than anything you already have for given objects or conditions.

Every time I've parted with a chunk of hard-earned $$$ for adding another quality eyepiece to my lineup, I'm temporarily seized by angst and guilt - am I mad? Am I a fool in need of more prudent sensibilities, perhaps even friendly intervention, to stop this compulsive, addictive behavior? BUT when I get my first good look through my new glass under decent night skies...it's HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY. Bah humbug to the naysayers.

I dunno. My 8" f/6 has premium optics and it was $500 delivered in 2000. So does my 5" f/12 refractor, bought used in 2003 (okay, that needed a $700 mount.) I doubt I could get one of those ZAOs for that price.

ZAO...

So far i have a small but what i think "balanced" set of ep´s.

5mm Baader Ortho. This one showed me something on Mars more than orange blur finally. Baader makes very nice ep´s.

32mm Celestron Omni Plossl, it feels like a solid ep and have given great views.

25mm Celestron Plossl that came with my Omni XLT. Another nice ep.

6.5mm generic Plossl. This one has given some good views at times, but i´m not that found of it. Barlowed to 308x it has impressed me on Saturn every now and then.

18mm Orion Kellner, often the one i start with on the Moon. Pehaps my favourite ep. These Kellners work great in my scope.

10mm generic Kellner, works fine in my scope.

20mm Huygens. A real interesting ep. These old designs can deliver surprisingly good views. Narrow fov, the full moon barley fits in the ep. Takes a bit of focusing to get the whole moon sharp at times. But i really like this one. Barlows great i can tell you. On axis sharpness is as good as any ep i have.

Generic 1.5-2x Barlow. I get some reflections from it in some ep´s. But it´s ok.

Baader Orange filter bought for Mars. It did work for me.

Variable Polarizing Moon filter. Good to have at times.

Wanted list for some oldie ep´s:
R, SR, HM, MH and some RKE´s.

42mm 2" GSO (on order)
24mm 2" Baader Hyperion
20mm 1.25mm Meade QX
15mm Televue Panoptic
13mm Televue Ethos (on order)
8mm 2" Baader Hyperion

And variety of Meade 4000 plössls that I no longer use.

I thought I had too many eyepieces - until I started reading this thread.
