I attached my 2" OIII filter to my Nagler 31mm eyepiece tonight. However, when I tried to remove the filter, I find that I can only get it about half way off of the threads on the eyepiece.
I'd prefer to remove it without damaging either the filter or the eyepiece, but if I have to choose, the filter is expendable.

was it cold outside? if so, wait, let it cool back to room temp before trying anything.

Try to see if it will screw back in. Then unscrew it again. Repeat until it works free. Sounds like the aluminum threads on the filter are galled. Inspect the filter threads for build up. If it is bad the filter threads need to be cleaned up with a xacto knife. If that doesn't work buy a cheap Moon filter and swap the filter into the new thread casing.

Sometimes a camera filter wrench will let you get a grip on the filter without deforming it - these cost a couple of bucks and work like a charm. Bruce, Toronto

I have a jar opener, that's rubber coated; has a large & small size opening. This works slick for removing just about anything, without damage.

Use a computer mouse pad, a soft neoprene one, not the glossy pads. On a table, press the barrel of the ocular against the mat strong enough and turn the EP. The filter will be unscrew.
I have been using this tip for photo camera filters for years.

The rubber band thing worked for me just the other day on an eyepiece barrel I wanted off . I was 'bout ready to put the thing in the shop vise ! I'm glad the rubber bands worked .

Knock the EP against a table a few times. If that doesn't work you can put it in a vise, set a chisel into the side of the filter at an angle and give it one quick sharp blow with a hammer. If you stick it in a washing machine it is likely to come off as well. If worse comes to worst you can stick it under your rear tire and back over it, it'll pop right off.
Seriously I like the rubber band idea BTW, thanks!

I just think the Nagler 31T5 is a lot more solid than people think. If you smashed a Timex watch with a 31 Nagler guess which one would still keep ticking? Just this last summer I built a dog house with a Nag 31T5 when i couldn't find my good hammer.

If your Nagler 31mm starts ticking then you need to throw as far as you can, because you have made the easy and understandable mistake of confusing it with a hand grenade.

I have a camera filter that "binds" all the time. I found a plastic "cable tie" put on so that the filter unscrews as the cable tie tightens, works perfectly. I carry 4 or 5 cable ties in my camera accesory case for this very purpose. The plastic cable tie doesn't damage anything and applies infinitely more undo force than you can apply with bare fingers
Cheers,

Followup:
I got them apart today. I had to remove the lower part of the eyepiece barrel from the 31mm, and use a pair of rubber jar opener pads to have enough torque to get the filter off. Between working it back and forth as suggested, and well, forcing it, I got it.
The threads on the filter are just trashed - they are gone on one side of the filter. The threads on the eyepiece barrel are in better shape, although I may need to send it back to TV for repair. (I tried cleaning them up with an xacto knife, as suggested - that helped a LOT.) We'll see how it goes.
I'm definitely going to try to sacrifice a moon filter to replace the body of the 2" OIII filter.
Thanks for the advice all! Now if only the shutter on my observatory hadn't broken the same day so that I could enjoy the nice clear night we're going to have this evening!
(That is a story for a different thread!)

Scott; sorry about that! What brand was the filter? I know I've had problems with Orion's screwing into my eyepieces.
Sure hope the threads on your eyepiece are still usable

Hi Carol. It was a lumicon 2" OIII. Good filter, it's worked flawlessly for several years. This was not the worst thing that happened do me that night. My mirror diagonal also fell in half while I was using it. (That was fixable, fortunately.)
I need to post a thread over in the obs. forum - I think I'm cursed, because neither of those things were the worst thing that happened!
