ES 24mm 68° vs 82°

Wonder if someone had the opportunity to compare these two, optically.

Besides the obvious differences in the specs like weight, eye relief, AFOV, both eyepieces had positive reviews.

I'm stressed about kidney bean intensity, usable field of view and overall contrast, if someone tested the two would be grateful for this info.

It is not a vaporware, I have one. But I've never seen the ES82 24mm. I have the ES100 20 and used the ES82 30mm though and I also compared the ES68 24 with Hyperion 24, Vixen LVW 22, Panoptic 24 and Nagler T4 22 under dark skies. I found it to be a great all around performer. It had the transmission of Hyperion and LVW, the edges were close second to Panoptic and LVW at f/4, the best handling after Panoptic, no blackouts and a great quality feel. It convinced me and I recently bought it from the man who loaned it to me. The same night I used the ES82 30. If the ES82 24 is comparable and you don't mind the weight you can invest on it, although I beleieve that the main advantage of the 24mm is the 1.25" format and lightweight. If you go to 2" then ES82 30 and ES100 20 offer more advantages IMHO. The 30 offers a smaller exit pupil, the 20 offers a cheaper Ethos 21 experience.

OK, it is evaporatedware, since it was materialized at some point.
I feel so lucky I got one.
I waited for my Delos 6 a long time though. The first one was stollen somewhere between the hands of the seller and mine and I paid it twice. It was refreshing to be lucky with an ES68 24 after that experience I try to forget.

Thanks folks,

Availability is a important feature I forgot to ask, opinions about near focal length oculars help but I need one wide-field for a 8 inch 1200mm f5.9 DOB that give 4mm exit pupil, I already have the 20 and 30mm covered.

Not finding a 24mm 68° I could got to a 82°, or going to the side of less FOV more correction a televue or sterling plossl 25mm

The 24mm 68 is our favorite for our skies, impossible to kidney bean it, clean all the way out, etc., etc. Just a joy to drive. Would we have gotten the 82 were it possible? Well if not there, then where? I WISH we had 82s.

I have a Explore Scientific 24mm 82 degree eyepiece, which delivers wonderful views of large objects. The Double Cluster and the Andromdeda Galaxy look great through my 10 and 15-inch F/4.5 Dobs, with pinpoint stars across the field when used with a coma corrector. Like the 30mm, it is a glass grenade, read large and heavy but it's a perfect fit for a medium sized Dob, SCT's and even small refractors that can accomodate it.

I already have a Meade 5000 SWA 68 degree 24mm. If I could get an ES 68 degree 24mm, would it make sense to go for it and sell the Meade? I believe they may be near clones.

The ES82 24mm (2") is my favorite eyepiece in my Dob. I've ordered the 24mm 68* (1.25") for a refractor I'm getting because the ES82 is big and heavy (over 2 lbs), the ES 68* 24mm is about the same size as the ES82* 1.25" eyepieces (ie 14mm, 11mm). As you have a dob, I'd go for the 82*. You will have a bigger FOV (1.6* vs 1.4*). Both eyepieces give you 50X and 4.1mm exit pupil.

I probably wouldn't get the ES 82 24mm because I already have an ES 82 30mm.

The Meade SWA24 and the ES 24 are basically Identical. I have the Meade 28mm 2" and I like it a lot.

Only if you prefer the rubber eyeguard on the ES. The eyepieces are optically identicle. I find the eye relief excellent and actually sold a Pan 24 in favor of the Meade.

Well, ours don't fog up when the others do. Dunno if it's the Argon but...and in the bathtub, we have to eliminate the 4.7mm or there'd be heck to pay. T-ruU-bl.

I have both

and wouldnt part with either. I prefer the color (whiter/more neutral),in the ES to that of the Nagler, (weak coffee).

That's good to know.

By the way, one thing I prefer about the Meade is that you can put it on a diet. I took the fat shroud off my Meade 5k 24mm and slimmed it down to fit much better in my equipment case and under my eye in the focuser. I found a rubber eyecup to fit the Meade. I also put my two Meade 5k 6.7mm on a diet to make a nice bino pair.

It looks like you have deshrouded the same type and number of Meades that I have. I found nice eyeguards to put on my mine. I'd take pictures, except my good camera is at work and won't be available until next Monday.

My Meades are all keeping their clothes on.

Meade SWA Series 5000 full set (16,20,24,28,34,40mm's)

The 24mm works great.

If they were to go on diets, several more eyepieces could fit in that case.

Function should dictate form.

I've not had any problems with dew, but we don't get dew very often where i live. I look at these as the classic style, with better, more modern optics.

Very easy. You start by prying off the rubber top. Mine had a little glue holding them in place, so this was the hardest part. Next, there is a small screw to remove where the outer barrel rides up and down. Once you have that out the shroud drops off below the eyepiece. You'll want to clean the barrel with solvent to remove the grease.

Unfortunately the MEADE 24mm 68° is not available at this time too, LOL !

The eyecups that I've placed on the Meade 5k UWA 6.7mm are the usual tall rubber eyecups that Edmund provides for their RKE eyepieces. They are also available at Orion.

The other usual suspects for eyecups are Agena Astro and ScopeStuff.

24mm 68 AFOV amy be eyepiece of choice if you binoview with 1.25" eyepieces since this would yield widest TFOV with 1.25". Otherwise I'd go with much wider 82 AFOV (or 100 AFOV) if you can afford it, sind most upgrade to wider AFOV.
