Crazy thread here. Ever find yourself liking or buying an eyepiece (or an entire line of EP's) just because you like the way they look?
Let's be honest here, EP lust gets the best of many of us.

Hey Jason, yeah absolutely :-) I even bought a line of EP's because they looked ugly! I had hoped they would lose their radiant disfigurement, alas... They still confound my senses; perhaps the addition of the final 3.2 will lessen their grotesquery!

All eyepieces are beautiful. Even the "ugly" ones: beauty is in the eye of the eye piece holder.

Wow! I must profess no history with this Beasty, so me ask the proverbial stupid question; is that six feet, or six inches? There are so many contrary cues! It must be six feet... Mustn't it? :-)

I just sold an eyepiece that seemed ugly after time had passed. Performance was so-so in my short FL reflector, but every time I looked at it, I wanted to throw it under a bus,
17mm Celestron Ultima LX.

Ultima LX 17mm you mean, please do not confuse the lurkers Axiom LX vs Ultima LX, big difference.

I wouldn't buy an eyepiece line primarily because of how they looked, but if a line of eyepieces I like happens to look good, all the better. I'm a fan of some moderately old school, no nonsense, clean designs, my favorites being the UO volcano top Orthos and the Celestron Ultimas/Orion Ultrascopics, with the nod going to the Celestrons for the color combination. Of course, these lines happen to be excellent performing eyepieces, too. It's not a complete line, but I'm fond of the looks of my UO 16mm Konig, purchased in the 90's or early 00's and I've always liked the Edmund RKE line, too. While I love the performance of the newer, wide-field eyepiece lines and think some are impressive looking, I just don't think they're as attractive as the simpler, more classic looking eyepiece lines.

I wouldn't buy an eyepiece because it's pretty but I would avoid another one because it is ugly. I might also get the prettiest one between two equal eyepieces. For example I always favored Hyperions over Orion or Celestron clones (but that's not the full story because they are also cheaper, better in some ways -coatings- and modular).

Never met an EP whose "looks" repulsed me, maybe the reason why there's 70+ EP's in the stall right now.

Let's be honest here, EP lust gets the best of many of us.
Once the 4.7mm arrives, I'll have the ES82* set. Didn't plan it that way, the cost was right.
My one weakness though, and an itch I must have caught here; to collect the complete set of T1 smooth side Naglers..Yes, I will use them occasionally, it's what they were made for. I know the ES 11mm gives the Nagler 13mm a run for its money. The Nagler 11mmT1 is in the mail as I type...and it ain't going nowheres after that till my will is read.

The one I got it from, who got it from someone else, who got it from someone else whose half step-brother told him that someone else told him that it's made from alien technology. Something about living glass. I poo-poo the story of course, but it does make strange noises at night and then there's those four mysterious air holes in the side...

Nice looking equipment = imposing and awe inspiring
or
Nice looking equipment = functional and rational
It seems that many eyepieces con fit into either camp, though I do find myself drawn to the second camp. Compact, utilitarian, and simple beat big, bulky, and bizarre for me. Then again, that alien eyepiece is pretty cool.

A lot of EP lines do color coding for different focal lengths, but I really like the look of the TMB Supermonos. Very nice looking. Helps that they are pricey and collectible too and I'm sure the views are great!

Hey, this is a DIY hobby too; you can always paint your Naglers hot pink, your ES's Flourescent Green, and replace all those red LED's with a black light!!

Sometimes the uglier the better. While they are both ugly the one on the left can still show you a good time.
