I will have to disagree, I feel the Pre-RKE 1" & 1 1/8" do share the same floating effect as the current RKE, the housings are very similar.
I agree with you...I have several 1-1/8" and 28 RKEs and they both behave exactly the same with the floating...they also have the same eye reliefs.

If I revisit this thread, I'll be sure to click on page 2. The post which produced the Panavision effect is on page 1.

OK I'm going to have to revisit that eyepiece, try it again, it has a chip in the lens so it got mothballed, I just don't remember that effect with it, BUT it has been 25 years, and a lot of scopes ago.. Seemed to me it was a 4 element not 3, and was optically different somehow...

Yes, the one labeled 1-1/8" is a Plossl, not a Kellner. I had the one labeled 1" also, and it was a Kellner.

Don, my 1" Edmunds is a non-symetrical Plössl similar to the 1 1/8", I just took it apart...

- I once got a 28mm RKE which came with the 8in f6 reflector that I purchased.
Worked quite well on the 8in as I recall until one night I did a side by side of the 28mm RKE, the 30mm Celestron Ultima and the 26mm Tele Vue Plossl.
I ended up selling my 80mm refractor later that year and I gave the 28mm RKE as part of the deal. -

The width of this thread makes me feel as if I'm floating in space ... similar to the effect of looking through an RKE 28!

The 1" Edmund I had didn't look like the 1-1/8" and had a knurled upper edge and a very convex eye lens facing the eye. I took it apart and it was a 3-element design with a doublet eye lens and a larger diameter singlet field lens. It was also uncoated.

I'm sure mine are uncoated. I have seen many Edmund eyepieces, mostly Kellners like your previous, with imperial focal length measurements. At the time they were produced, from old military lenses, the labeling of the eyepieces were a little bit more liberal and less specific.
