I guess my newly arrived 24mm UWA needs a big brother. Meade is offering some really nice value with these weekly deals.

Prob not, because they more than likely have the same glass. Same goes for the 24mm Meade 5000 UWA and the 24mm ES eyepieces.

Its a great eyepiece I bought one a couple years ago when it was twice this price.. You will enjoy it. I did get the 24mm when it was on sale and that is a great eyepiece also. Maybe Ill be able to get the whole set if they deal them every few weeks.

The 30 is a nice eyepiece, but it is very heavy. I had the original ES 30 82 clone but sold it and bought the newer N2 version. The newer ES is much better ergonomicly. Although the $149 price is tough to pass up. Barry

Rogue, et. al,
This is a VERY GOOD deal on the Meade 30mm UWA. My guess is Meade wanted to get some attention - and they got it! This is an excellent eyepiece if you want the ultimate "porthole" window to the universe.
I too got the 24mm UWA/Diagonal deal (great kit btw) and was ready to pull the trigger on the 30mm. Once Meade announced this deal I had to go for it. It was too good to pass up! My fear was people would buy several of them, Meade would run out of them, and folks would then resell them on ebay.
ES vs.Meade UWA? My scan of the reviews shows: -- over 90% cannot tell the difference between the two -- most folks have a personal preference -- the 10% that can tell a difference, seem to give the slight edge to Meade.
Still, at half off you really cannot go wrong.
I cannot wait to use these ep with my soon to arrive LX850 (well in relative terms!).
I am really liking these weekly deals from Meade!

You and Meade are not making this easy on me. I have all the EP's I need except I was kinda looking at getting a used Meade smooth side 56mm plossl or 55mm Televue plossl for my 10" LX200. I want to get the largest true field of view I can with that scope but finding used 56mm smoothside plossls isn't that easy and I don't need it bad enough to spend a fortune. If I tried a 56mm plossl on my dob I would get an exit pupil of 9.5mm .The 30mm UWA could be used on both scopes with an acceptable exit pupil and not much less TFOV than the 56mm plossl would provide. That 30mm UWA is a monster. I wonder how many Smurfs can fit in that thing?

It's a good deal but according to the Astronomics website, it weighs 47 ounces. Thats 12-13 ounces heavier than the ES30mm or the 31 mm Nagler. And with that giant eyecup, it's likely to be a awkward to view through.
I often use my 32mm Telewide Wide Field instead the 31 mm Nagler because it is lighter, more compact and while it's not as sharp in a fast scope, it does a decent job. There is more to an eyepiece than just the optics, ES was smart when they redesigned their eyepieces to be more on the TV model ergonomically, their 30mm is a Heavyweight, it has to be, but its a lean and trim heavyweight ready to do battle.

If I didn't already have the new version ES 82 30, I might go for the Meade UWA 30. But that extra 13 ounces could be a deal breaker.

This is true. I'm not sure if the full 13 oz would be lost, but there should be some significant reduction in weight.

I measured the weight loss as 8 oz. on mine. 1/2 lb. does make a noticable difference for balancing purposes and it does look much better. This one is about 10 years old and has been used a lot. Will only be sold in my estate sale
Removing the shroud will leave you needing a top cap. Agena has you covered with possible slight modifications needed. Eric

If you factor in the CN discount and free shipping on the 30 ES82 the price difference is about $80 more than the 30 Meade UWA. I've got a 31 Hyperion Aspheric that's a very good eyepiece but it's not a FL that's used very often. David

I've got a meade 28mm SWA and the 40mm SWA. The 30 in my 16" is only 5x less magnification, yet it's almost the exact same TFOV as the 40mm. This is a no brainer, even with the weight factor. Less eyepiece swapping, best trait from the 28 and the 40 combined.

Anybody use two of these w/o shroud for 2" binoculars or binoviewing? Or are they still too wide.
I already have one, but never removed the shroud, because I like the shroud up when monoviewing to keep stray light out and act as a face/cheek rest.

It sure is a nice deal for a LOT of eyepiece
Wanted to add something I seem to have found a week ago regarding brightness, eye position, and tint level through the glass between the Meade 5000 and the Celestron Luminos that many here might find interesting. From an indirect analysis, the 23mm Luminos appears to have a slight but noticeable brighter throughput than the many Meade 24mm UWA 5000 I've examined at earlier dates. Reason to say this is my previous mixed feelings of the Meade in this regard. Same for the Luminos eye position being better. The eye relief seems slightly longer in this regard over the similar 24mm Meade to take in the view better and more directly. When pointing the 23mm Luminos to a white ceiling for study (a wacky astronomer activity? maybe so ) the tint from light absorption is hardly visable where with all the earlier Meades I had were slightly amber toned off from white. Glass and/or coatings? The coatings of the Luminos do look great, better I think than the Meades as I recall them surface per surface. This leads me to wonder how the 31mm Luminos fits in against the Meade 5000 and ES 30mm models in a DIRECT comparison Maybe someone has had opportunity to check this out?

I might should add that the 24mm Meade UWA model samples of this series that I had owned might have been field stopped slightly larger per FL (not an uncommon practice) than my 23mm Luminos is done where the latter would gain a touch of eye relief over the former, and therefore be made a little easier to utilize a huge UW AFOV. All I can say with certainty at this time is that I am found well pleased with the 23mm I picked up second hand in like new condition. So far a keeper until can test it out further. As for the original Meade 30mm 5000, it obviously has better eye relief than the 24mm in that series. I liked the one I had in 2009 very much even with the larger, heavier fully intact outer body in place!

I ordered mine last Fri, and no indication of status. I'm not worried, though. Despite their poor front-end in delivering stuff to you, Meade have honored every warranty claim I've had with them. Maybe not the most personally friendly, Meade has been efficient and effective.
I also don't think Meade will run out of stock. I'll bet we receive this monster plainly wrapped, as we did the 24UWA/diagonal deal that arrived bubblewrapped in a plain brown cardboard box. At the same time, Meade ALSO had the 24UWA in their form-fitting boxes, because they gave me one when my "plain box" eyepiece arrived broken.
So I'm thinking that the 30UWA is part of an over-production/over-stock deal, and they will arrive in a plain box.
Fingers crossed they survive the bumpy ride up our mountain (yeah! USPS delivers to the back o'nowhere! )

Oh, and I really don't mind the weight or the larger than life look of the 30mm UWA eyepiece. Heck, I love it on the 24mm. No problem with weight issues on my telescope.
With the 24 mm I really like the "port hole" view. Image is wonderful. I have read the same thing about the 30mm. And guests seem to love the monster eyepiece too, for whatever reason.
Anyone use a Barlow on the 24mm or 30mm eyepiece?

I've use a 2x Barlow with my 24mm UWA, works fine. I was sorely tempted by the 30mm, but it just wasn't a big enough change from my 24mm. I'm still curious though...

I've used a 2" GSO barlow on the 24mm and the edges vignette considerably enough to really notice.

Mine was just delivered. Now I may be old and going blind, but does anyone else see a warranty registration on their site? The card that came in the box claims you can register the eyepiece online. I am not seeing it.
And it did come in the form fitting box by the way.

And now I get a message from UPS that the package address is incomplete and cannot be delivered. The apartment number was missing, yet I know I filled it out, and the receipt email from meade shows the number too. UPS is fixing it and the center will call me tomorrow...

I de-cloaked my 24mm UWA and added a lightweight eyeshield of my own. This reduced the weight by about 20%. The only problem I've had so far is that it is hard to go back to using wide field eyepieces after looking though the UWA!

So I'm thinking that the 30UWA is part of an over-production/over-stock deal, and they will arrive in a plain box.
Fingers crossed they survive the bumpy ride up our mountain (yeah! USPS delivers to the back o'nowhere! )
Well. Hrrrmph. Mine arrived last night. I was wrong on the eyepiece not being delivered in it's form-fitting box.
Well. Hrrrmph. I was right about the eyepiece not surviving the trip. UPS was the carrier, not USPS.
When the box arrived, it rattled something awful. I could tell the eyepiece was rolling around in what felt like an empty box.
I video'd opening the box in case I had trouble claiming any damage from Meade. As you can see in the attached photo, there was no padding around the inner box. The inner box had opened, and the eyepiece was rolling loose. The eyelens cap had come off and the eyepiece covered in dust. The form-fitting box is crushed and torn.
I called Meade and they are right on the ball. They sent me shipping labels to send back the damaged item, and will ship me a new eyepiece. Good for Meade.
But ya gotta ask yourself: WHO IN HELL PACKED THIS THING?
When I spoke with the Meade rep, I asked if they wanted to see the photos and video. Meade needs to get their delivery department in better shape. The rep was not interested. I would still like to get this information to someone who cares at Meade. Anyone have an email contact at Meade?
I am so tired that people think everything is disposable in our society. This was a beautiful eyepiece that is now trashed.
OK, I'm off the soapbox now.

Wow, brutal.
I don't even have my own eyepiece business, but I do a lot of buying and selling of eyepieces and I make sure to pack them really well with utmost care. I hear nothing but raves from people who buy eyepieces from me.
What I am seeing here is unacceptable.

The invoice had an email address: store at meade dot com. I sent the pictures and my offer of sending them the video. We'll see if there is a response.
This is the second time in 4 weeks that I have filed a claim with Meade due to poor packing. To Meade's credit, they have made good, but they need to do better with packing.

I was also shocked to see that there was no packing materials surrounding the smaller box when I received mine. Mine survived intact, but a little bubble wrap, or even crumpled newspaper would have been nice. I also found out that contrary to the enclosed warranty card text, you can't register your warranty online.

Mine showed up today, same situation, a big box with the eyepiece box loose inside of it. I was pretty surprised by that, but luckily it wasn't damaged.
I was really thrown off by how heavy the box was and got a little worried, until I took the eyepiece out and realized at least half of the weight was in that enormous black box it comes in. After I took it out, it didn't seem like it was that bad at all. I own the Meade 40mm SWA, a very sweet eyepiece, and the 30mm is just a little wider and only .2 pounds heavier.

I received my order today, and I was thrilled to find it packed with great care (original box, lots of bubble wrap, and special in every way). The eyepiece is magnificent!!! Carlos Carreto did a wonderful job, and I consider him to be one of the best in "customer service". Meade has a real asset in him, and my buying experience was fantastic. I guess with such a large company with many people providing service, some employees may need to be trained better. I would definitely let Carlos know about the unsatifactory packing, so they can solve the problem and prevent it from happening again. My experience was great, so I won't hesitate to look to them first for all my astronomy needs. :-)

Like hottr6, mine arrived inside a large box with no inner packing, but the EP itself was in the original box, which was itself in a tight-fitting white box. The lid on the white box had worked its way open from banging around in the larger box but fortunately mine had not been kicked around quite as hard so the innermost EP box stayed closed and intact and on first inspection it looks like the EP itself survived fine. But it was silly of them to take this shortcut...
Oh, and this makes the 24mm eyepiece look svelte. What a beast. At $150 this thing was cheap by the pound!

My replacement arrived last night. A better job of shipping because they used a small external box, but still no cushioning between the shipping box and the eyepiece box inside. The corners of the eyepiece box sustained slight damage and there is noticeable scuffing on the interior padded box. If I were a collector, I'd be upset. Eyepiece arrived in good shape, with a plastic bag around the eyepiece.
I placed my order 14 March. I get to use my eyepiece in May.
