University Optics HD Orthos are coming back!
      #5766774 - 03/30/13 12:19 PM

Just got a letter in the mail today from University Optics announcing that the HD ortho line is coming back. They are starting with the 6mm and 12.5mm soon followed by other focal lengths later in 2013. These will be made by the same lens maker that supplied the Tani Orthos glass, will be all Japanese made and will be fully multi coated. Interesting news is that they are going to make a 4mm version.

Best news is.....price will be $100!

Great to see there're coming back. I still have some HD focal lengths to fill out.

And even better news to learn that UO is still in the game!

I hope it's true... Just had an amazing view of Jupiter in the XT8i last night due to the rare night of great seeing with the UO HD 12 + TV 2x for 200x! Great EP IMO.

I'm ready. The Japanese ortho suppliers have been dancing around a bit lately as has the yen. Lower prices may be a result of the latter. I expect that these will come from the same source as the Hutech/Kasai and the highly regarded BGO marks. Bring 'em on.

At that price they would undercut the Kasais by a fair bit.

A couple more interesting points....they are claiming that these HD's will be the only current orthos "made completely" in Japan. I am wondering about that phrasing. Are the Hutech's/Kasai's made in Japan? Or is some of it being outsourced?

Second, they are touting that these will have a superior polish on the lens and better multi coatings.

I am wondering based on the price if these have no relation to the Hutech/Kasai offerings. If they are the same, then how is UO offering these at a substantial discount?

I had an e-mail exchange recently with Manish at Agena regarding the Kasai orthos. He said they would be rebranded Hutech with a new color and a lower price. The yen has taken a bit of a beating lately. They are expected soon but, as we all know, delivery dates are often speculative. Let's hope... I too am excited that UO is still in the game.

The wording is "all air to glass surfaces have the latest Japanese broadband multi-layer coatings with light loss at less than 0.2% per surface." It also says the multi coated optics "represents an uptick in quality and performance." Then they mention the polish by saying "the superb lens polish virtually eliminates the the sleeks and pits found in a number of more expensive occulars. Light scatter is at a minimum and contrast increased." Regarding the performance of these new HD and a mention of Zeiss "an experienced observer can tell no visual difference between these University H.D. orthos and similiar designs costing many times more".

Perhaps this will put an end to the ridiculous prices people have been asking AND paying for these lately in the classifieds. I couldn't understand it since it has been known that they are coming back to the market, we just didn't know if it was gonna be a week or a few more months.

the undercuts are a "value added product" and I don't see them going away. Why not buy a smooth barrel from surplus shed if they aren't upon release.

BTW, first light optics got n initial shipment in of the 5mm reportedly.

I find it hard to understand how it was known for ages that the BGOs were goint out of production and people didnt buy when they had the chance. At the rumour of the Circle Ts maybe going I jumped in and bought all I needed.

As to the Kasais or UOs they are not much use if you need a BGO to complete a set or want the EP now and in fairness manufacturers are always saying a new peoduct will be here in a few weeks which often translates as to something like a year or maybe not at a spec/price you want or maybe never at all......

When the BGO s were around much was written about their semi magical Phantom coatings and how these made them so much better....maybe thats why people will pay more for them than they will for the replacements without the Phantom coatings. The BGOs were also smoothsided and that seems to have value to some people.

For me its not a worry, I have a full set of BGOs minus the 12.5 which I sold when somone was willing to pay over the odds. I will sell the rest if the market hits a point where it will pay 100 per eyepiece. The cost is the cost its whatver the market will bear and what people will pay. For me its also about what they are worth to me, at less than 100 I would rather keep them even though I never use them. At 100 theres enough cash on the table to make me let go of them and of late I am minded to unload on the other hand I want to see if the markeyt will pay even more later on. I can afford to wait and the EPs wont go under what I paid for them so its safe cash to me. With the bank paying zip on savings the ROI is better on glass I reckon.

It's just possible that there is some sort of "name game" going on with these coatings. I wonder if there is any significant difference with these orthos that are of essentially the same design/source. A marketing "phantom" in the works?

9, 12.5, 18 and 25mm would be very nice in the Baader Q-Turret, and with the integral x2.25 Q-Barlow 11, 8, 5.6, 4 mm would make an awesome planetary/double star set.

I'm going to go ahead and be critical. I don't believe it. If the factories were damaged by the tsunami and that is the reason for stopping production--that and flagging sales--then why restart production on these alone? The old bullet-shaped models have always sold better than the HDs. Why not bring those back instead? What has changed between "we're finished" and now? And as rgm40 mentions, why is the only announcement effectively a rumor from inside information?

Thanks.

Hutech and now UO are saying these are being produced again. OPT and First Light Optics mention them being available again in the future (Hutech branded). I will withold judgement for now, and keep my fingers crossed these reports are accurate. With a Lecia ASPH on order, I doubt I would really need these except for my vintage refractors but I really did like my BGO set. If an UO branded set is forthcoming, I imagine I will go ahead and work on a set while I instigate for a 25mm version to be added to the line up.

UO is an old company way before the "net". They do offer an email bulletin from time to time, but you will find that their web page is not up to what you probably expect from your experience with newer companies. In fact, you find out the newer info from a good old mailing list, which they will be glad to put you in if request it.

I might be in the minority but I like UO the way it is and has been.

It is true, I received an email from Jan Seyfried of University Optics this morning confirming:

*6mm and 12.5mm being released first.
*4mm is being released but will cost $25 more due to extra effort to center and cement triplet, planned for late Summer.
*25mm is also being planned, no eta.
*UO requested smooth barrels.

Hmmm, perhaps now to wish for a 32mm HD Ortho

I already have the UO HD set along with the 25mm Volcano top, but I would really like to see something even bigger. Maybe a 32mm. I would get the Brandon but the edge performance would not be very good in any of my refractors. Perhaps the Ortho would have the same problem though, I am not sure.

A 32/25/18/12.5mm HD Ortho set in a Baader Q-Turret would be nice, and combined with the x2.25 Q-Barlow 14.2/11/8/5.5mm would be a very nice affordable planetary/double star set, with decent eye relief and much better than sans the 32 mm option.

Off-topic: This is one reason why I love the Brandon 1.25" set and the Q-Turret/Barlow. Plus the Brandon's are excellent with the parfocal factor, at least compared to my ex-BGO set, and that works well with a turret.

Hmm. UO HDs. Why don't people get the BCOs? They cover a smaller amount of the optical spectrum, admittedly, with only 6, 10, and 18mm offerings, but every reviewer has said the BCOs use newer, superior coatings than the original BGOs. On top of this, they sell for $74 brand spanking new. Now, I realize they're not made in Japan, but a lot of excellent TeleVue product is coming out of Taiwan these days. Now, if you want to pick up the 12, and, if you like scratching your cornea on glass, the 4mm, I can see a reason for someone (read fanatic) picking up those models, but otherwise, what's the big deal? Seems to me the BCOs are already here and shipping and ARE the real deal, and they cost less. So what's the big deal?

Besides, in the 12.5mm size, I'd probably prefer the Sterling Plossl, due to its extra TFOV. The 17mm Sterling Plossl is a great mid-range ocular, and the Sterling 25mm is literally a poor man's Pan 24. Again, what's the big deal? It'll be interesting to see what comes of it, and perhaps Barnett can put together another World Cup of sub 65* performers, but waiting till that time is something I can somehow manage to endure, sans tears.

Actually I've seen a few reviews rating the BCOs as being "so-so". The UO HDs, which I've used, really are great. I haven't seen a so-so UO HD review.

Example: http://stargazerslounge.com/topic/175014-baader-classics-the-story-so-far/

"The view with the BCO seemed as sharp and contrasty as the BGO 6mm but showed just a touch more light scatter / glare from the bright planetary disk. The extra field of view provided by the BCO shows some distortion when objects enter the outer part of the field."

"The field stop of the BCO 6mm was not sharply defined as the razor sharp BGO an Circle-T 6mm orthos, which was slightly annoying but did not seem to affect the optical performance as far as I could see."

It troubles me that the BCO show off axis astigmatism at f/7.5. A standard Abbe Ortho design handles even f/5 pretty well. I ain't sold on the BCOs as a result, and would rather wait for UO HDs, personally.

Regards,

Jim

every reviewer has said the BCOs use newer, superior coatings than the original BGOs.

And you need to ask yourself how would someone writing a review really know this unless they were just repeating some marketing gibberish? The best one could do is say that they measured the transmission and speculate as to why they might be different. It could be true but how would anyone in our position really be able to know that and state it as fact?

+1... or the Hutech/Kasai which I suspect has the same source as the UO HD.

I have the 10 and 6mm BCO for testing purposes. I still haven't taken them out to dark skies yet...to validate them. The BCOs seems good so far

I also got the Barlow...I'm not so confident of it so far. I hope it is just a bad copy.

I used them with my 22" f/4 reflector, Tak TOA150 6" and 4" f/11 achromat in my front yard just looking at stars.

I need more time before I pass judgement on these eyepieces.

Given Kasai are going back into production I wonder why Baader dont reintroduce the BGOs.

I do wonder though if this love affair with orthos will last to keep them in production or whether after the huffing and puffing no one will buy and theybwill once again be taken away. That would be shame I think.

That could well happen. It seems that most amateurs today are more interested in wider and wider fields of view, better corrected edge of field and longer eye relief than a subtley sharper and more contrasty image.

Mike

Manish has posted an update on the Hutech/Kasai line. I'm afraid it's more a matter of "no news" rather than "good news". Here's a link:

Well then, there's only one thing to do. Jim Barnett, PJ Anway, and Bill Paolini, as the upholders of genuine Abbe Ortho integrity need to each take 6mm BCO, BGO, a volcano top and perhaps a Brandon for standardization's sake to the skies for a genuine OK Corral shootout. I'm talking no holds barred, all guns blazing. Till the last ep is left standing. Well, at least the last ortho with the Brandon. The Cloudy Nights midnight cowboys are a waiting.

Now, I realize they're not made in Japan, but a lot of excellent TeleVue product is coming out of Taiwan these days.

Are the BCOs from that factory? or from Taiwan at all?

I thought BCO was from mainland China?

I'm in for the full set. Regretted not getting them before they were discontinued. They will compliment my Brandons well. Too bad they didn't go with the volcano top, that would increase sales IMHO. I may have to do a couple doubles for the binoviewer as well.
