UO HDs Gone Wild!
      #5842508 - 05/05/13 09:28 PM

The uniformed are bidding through the ceiling over on FleaBay. A 7mm and 12mm HD are pushing 140 clams each! If they only knew.

The Baader GOs did over here, and probably will again I dont doubt.

For me its not what they are worth to the buyer its what they are worth to me. I would probably sellthe se if ai could get 100 per EP but I wouldnt sell for less.

I've been selling my BGO's as I acquire eyepieces of the same focal length that give me a better view ... or if buyers give me an offer I can't refuse! After I bought an XO 5.1, my BGO 5mm went out the door. My BGO 12.5 left when I got a good offer.

So far, though, my BGO 6, 7, 9 (pair) and 18 (pair) are staying.

There are two additional factors to consider: small size/weight and binoviewing. I have an XW 7 that rivals the BGO 7, but the BGO makes more sense ergonimically for grab-n-go with small scopes. Also, I can fit the BGO 7 in a little case with ten other planet / lunar eyepieces. I couldn't fit the XW 7 by itself in that case!

My final verdict is still out on my BGO 6 vs Brandon 6. When a comparo between eyepieces is too close to call, I tend to keep both.

Mike

At the rate the prices are going, my UO-HD 5mm is not going anywhere.

You might want to re-think that logic. Sell your 5 for $140...buy a new one from UO for less. They are coming back into production. See the earlier thread.

Sorry but am afraid am not much as to fleece uninformed fellow astro-enthusiasts. And my UO5 flattop is working great, it seems long-winded to take the route of going to the trouble of selling then re-buying the same EP. Thanks, seems illogical, but I'll pass.

Best,

Agree, I'd rather be viewing thru them then spending time trying to get rid of them....just to buy them back again...just not worth it...not to mention that greed already has ruined this good old earth enough already.....

"Fleecing" is too strong a word when you consider the dollar amounts we are talking about...and "greed", well greed was most certainly not my intention, although, I do agree with you that greed, especially the corporate flavor, has led to many a problem in today's world...just ask Bernie Madoff . I just find the FleaBay shenanigans entertaining.

As for myself, I enjoy good a astro-find...a few weekends ago I picked up a $300 Bogen tripod for $5 at a garage sale and a mint Questar full aperture solar filter on FleaBay for $19. Did I feel guilty?...not a bit. Seller, educate thyself...Buyer beware. On the flip side, I recently traded my car for a new vehicle and left way too much dealer profit on the table. Karma.

The U.O. HD's will be China made, as are the look alike Kasai's. The Kasai's box is stamped Japan, but there was no maker mark on the eyepiece itself.

Made in China and up the price?

The UO HDs are likely from the same source as the Astro-Hutech orthos... entirely produced in Japan according to the Agena Astro description. It should be interesting to see if they carry the UO mark. According to a recent e-mail from Manish at Agena, these were resurrected though the efforts of Ted Ishikawa at Astro-Hutech.

I would guess if people dont start buying them off the shelves the current stock might be the last. For all the hype no one seems to be buying from what I can see. Agena lists numbers in stock and they dont seem to be moving.......

Had a 6mm Kasai, green box stamped japan, nothing on the eyepiece itself. Did you ever, EVER, even see a lens from japan not marked. But the chinas do it all the time, guess they they are ashamed or deliberate deception?

Hey, maybe the box was made in Japan.

I do know there are knockoffs as well as just mfg mistakes. Take the UO OPS line, this was an attempt by UO to incorporate planetary filtering into the glass lenses themselves instead of screw-on filters. When the idea didn't go over that well (they're still great on planets, just not on anything else, but hey, that's why they were call planetaries by UO)some of the leftover housings were used for regular ortho lenses. You can tell a true OPS because it has a mirrored surface look to it. Another example is the Lumnicon filters, some recently have came out with no markings on the filters.

Yep...have one of those. Looks as if someone simply took a black Sharpie and marked out the "OPS" on the lens housing.

And then there are performance issues. All these 6mm lenses were exactly the same in the Carton 100/1300 and the 10" dob.

Except the one with the gold ring was slightly sharper/crisper/contrasty than the others, Omegon Super Plossl, bought on ebay, shipped from Germany, with no makers mark either.

They had an incident a while back with a whole bunch of mislabelled filters, so I'm not too surprised if they opted to avoid labelling altogether :-)

I've been testing a set of the Astro Hutech orthos - 5, 6, 7, 9, 12.5 and 18mm. All have "Japan" printed on their bodies, underneath the Astro Hutech branding. The 5, 7, 9 and 12.5 Hutech's are identical to the Baader GO's in all respects including coating hue and, most importantly, performance. The 6mm and 18mm Hutech's have shorter bodies than the Baader equivalents and reach focus around 8mm further outwards. Otherwise their performance appears to match the Baader GO equivalents as well.

In the UK the Hutech's are priced around $20 more than the Baader GO's were.

Hope the new UO orthos are from Japan, not that China can't make a quality ep, just look at Explore Scientific. But I want the same product everyone has raved about over the years, the one that gave the UO HD orthos a good reputation to begin with, not a "look a like", such as the Baader Classic Orthos compared to the NGOs.

Jan at UO has specifically said that the coming HD orthos are completely Japanese made, from the lenses to the machining to the coatings.

Thanks John, for the "on the ground" assessment. The Hutechs have a good pedigree and I'm pleased they seem to meet expectations. I imagine the much anticipated UOs will do the same.

I've got a full set of BGOs so I'm holding out for the promised 4mm and 25mm! Although the report on focus position being further out on the 18mm makes me think about replacing my 18mm pair, hmm..,

I just bought a pair of 9mm Hutechs from Agena. I will be comparing them with my 9mm BGO using the AP 175. When I am done I will post an observing report.
