The Great Rift: Four Frame Mosaic !!!!
      #5871985 - 05/19/13 05:08 PM Attachment (72 downloads)

Assembled from a sequence of four 60 minute exposures in September 2011, this panorama extends from Scutum through Aquila and Cygnus, to Cepheus.

A pentax 67 with 105mm lens captured each panel on one night. The camera rode atop an equatorially mounted telescope while I hand guided and watched for aircraft, capping the lens and noting the additional time needed for equal exposure time of each frame.

Assembled successfully here for the first time in preparation for a very large print to be exhibited locally.

Absolutely beautiful, especially to those who understand the difficulties of producing something of that magnitude!! Jim, I can grasp the aircraft watch, but what about satellites, meteorites, etc., can you erase them in PS or something (if one sneaks in)?

Jim, that photo is simply fantastic.
Can't help but being marveled by the 3 dimensional effect of the obscuring dark clouds.

Thank you Geoff, Doppler, and Jeff.

Doppler, because the film and lens aperture are so slow most satellites don't leave an impression. The image accumulation is very slow. I do get an Iridium now and then, but not too often.

Jeff, The star clouds have so much detail within them and I often see many imagers making the contrast absurdly high to reveal the subtleties.

I often have to put up with someone pulling the image down and reworking the contrast, then posting it back on the thread to reveal a "better" image.

Jim:

I know what you mean about 'improved' images. Especially in the digital forums (DLR and CCD, both here and elsewhere) some folks often take things to an extreme, trying to 'bring out' detail in a way that I find jarring and 'unrealistic'. Astrophotography is an art in which one wants to show details that might be difficult or impossible to see with the eye (like the colors of nebulae), while at the same time creating an image that looks like a sky that we might see. This is particularly true in wide shots of large chunks of sky. There is of course subtlety involved, and different tastes, but some shots just seem obviously false. And details are usually lost, not gained, in over-processing.

Here is another image that shows that you've mastered the balance!

James, beautiful stuff on the Fine Arts site (I just ordered a print of "Solitude") - I only see one astrophoto there (and it is nice!), but I thought I saw more of your AP for sale somewhere else? Greg

Thanks again!

James

Sorry to all that this is off topic, but I have to say, regarding "Solitude", that horizon is the epitome of "mesmerising"!!

Just got my 24 x 8.5" print yesterday, and took a quick flash photo this morning. I used keys, knife, etc., for scale. I figured I'd post it so that James will have something to trump with his 72" print :-)

Thanks guys. The print is on semi-gloss Epson Professional paper and I built the wooden frame with a foam core surface special for this print. It is now secured in place at its intended destination. More on that later.....

Jim, how did you affix the print to the foam core board? I'm just getting back into mounting prints and I am going to use double sided archive tape to mount 8x10 prints in 11x14 mats, but I don't know yet what to do for my 24" Great Rift print.

Hi Greg, I use Elmer's Craft Bond. I recommend using the permanent bond method with this product. I used the temporary bond method and it lifted over time. The permanent bond method requires a quick adhesion. I was sweating a lot while my wife and I applied the glue and rolled and smoothed the print onto the mat.

http://www.elmers.com/product/detail/E422

You may try other products, this one is just easily accessible and affordable for me.

Cheers,

Jim

The mosaic has received many visitors including a special visit yesterday. From what I hear, Alex liked the photo.
