I'll give it a try too! Here is my very first attempt with a webcam, took it on April 30 from Idaho Falls, Idaho, 22:00. I used a Toucam Pro with a Celestron 9.25 SCT, f20, about 1200 frames stacked with Registax. Transparency was good, but quite a bit of turbulence. I believe the moon is Europa.
Thanks.

Greetings,
My name is Martin R. Howell and I took this picture of Jupiter around 0500UT on May 2, 2004, in Lake Stevens, Washington with a disposable 35mm camera which was on sale for less than four dollars. I hand-held it up to a 9mm eyepiece on my 12.5 inch Meade Starfinder dobsonian and clicked a few exposures hoping that one or two would capture the planet. . .a real task when not using an SLR camera! The next morning, I rushed the camera to a local drugstore for one hour developing of its contents and had the results put on a Kodak Picture CD. Choosing the best image, I then adjusted it as best I could with the accompanying Kodak EasyShare software. The tiny dot (somewhat smaller than a period) in the North Temperate Zone (bottom of image as this is an inverted view) is the shadow of a moon either in, or near, transit. I humbly submit the photo into the contest.

Put some money behind it and people come out of the woodwork. Mr. Peach, I think it a bit comical that it says "newbie" anywhere near your name, same goes for Gu Yu. Anyhow, heres my attempt with my economy gear.

Hello Tom,
AFter thinking about your comments and looking at all the entries the way this contest has been set-up is flawed.
The huge variance in quality and intrumentation used makes judging this contest fairly to everyone just impossible (and this comes from someone who views thousands of Jupiter images each apparition.)
This contest should have been set-up with two categroies, for beginner and advanced levels of observer, as to be fairer to everyone entering. I would be interested to hear the views of the web page managers/others on these points.
In all honesty, i think Myself and Gu Yu should perhaps respectfully withdraw our entries from this contest as it stands at present.
Best Wishes,
Damian

Hello Damian,
I completely agree with you! Also I like to complain about the rule for limiting image size under 60k. I noticed Mr. Peach and my image has been reduced to a much smaller scale. I understand there are peoples with slow internet connections. But as an image contest, everybody should post the best quality possible. Otherwise it will become an image compression contest.
Clear Skies,
GY

You may post a link to a larger image if you feel that 60k does not do your photo justice. This competition was generously sponsored by Digitec with three prizes and is for all levels of photographers.

Hi,
The equipment Damian and Yu Gu obtained their images with fall well within the amateur arena. The quality images they obtain are a result of their skill and level of commitment. I welcome the opportunity to see the possibilities and hope these individuals (and others who are submitting excellent work) stick around and share their techniques, images and comments.
