Phil G's NGC6888 (The Crescent) shows more detail, and more sharply, than any other photo I've seen of this object. It is the ONLY photo I've seen that shows the nebula as it appears in a 28-32" scope with an O-III filter. Kudos!

Does it appear that way naked eye in a scope of that caliber? (I'm not too familiar with DSO viewing).

Wow, 18 hours of exposure on NGC6888! That's hard to top, what a ton of effort. Outstanding image.. would love to see the full size version. However, I voted for Erika because the artistry and detail in the solar prominence is superb quality.

Thanks Don! Boy I'd love to get a look at it through a 30" scope.
Some great entries. I had to check Erika's category a few times until it sunk in that she actually DREW THAT! Wow!
Good luck to everybody,

These images are some of the best I've seen by "Amateurs" in the different catagories.
Each one has it's own beautiful qualities. Hard to choose "JUST ONE"!
Good Luck to all the entrants!

All of the images are outstanding. However, each time I compare sketches to photos I would prefer to have a separate category for photos and sketches. Each medium is unique in the talent and equipment required for the end results. Photos require a great deal of experience as well as specifi equipment. Whereas the artist translates what he/she sees and renders it on paper. Many of the sketchers manage to produce an image that may actually appear to be a photograph. I suggest monthy contest for both the imager as well as the sketcher. Would the "powers to be" please consider this request? Thank you, Dave

Thanks everyone. And my goodness, the images here are amazing. Each month, I'm blown away by the talent and dedication by the entrants here on CN.
Dave, as for the separate categories, we do have a separate sketching 'contest' in the sketching forum. The winner of that each month represents the one that goes on to this over all imaging contest.
If you think about it, how can you compare a CCD to film or digital? And then there's the beginners going up against the seasoned astro imagers. Each is a unique category and really is difficult to compare against the other.
But the main reason for this overall contest is to share what is going on in the other forums. As a sketcher, seeing the other entries always spurs me to have a look at the work that's being done in the other forums. Amazing stuff!

Vote? Feh! Impossible! These are all brilliant and hit me each in their own way.
I agree that there should be a separate category for sketches. They are two very different arts and skills.
Conte crayon is totally unforgiving. Mark and mean it! Snaps for that! For photography I'd need better equipment, spot on precision, and flawless tracking. For either I'd need more patience than I have.
Kudos to all!
Rich.

The most difficult vote I've had to make so far. What a talented group of observers. Also, I don't like the idea of separating "imaging" from "sketching". Although imaging is a more "objective" method for capturing these magnificent views, the sketch artists, from time to time, might offer a more "subjective" view that teaches us all something more (something personal) about the subject. Anyone who has seen the sketches (on paper and digitally rendered) of Sol Robbins and Sissy Haas cannot deny this. Please don't get upset, though. I understand that the art of astroimaging is equally intricate, considering all the exposure times and filter combinations you have to decide upon, but these decisions are parallel to the choices between paper weights and pencil grades. Astroimagers spend the same "labor of love" on their captures/observations/creations as the sketch artist. We should keep the observations in the same contest/category. My humble opinion.... God bless, and clear skies & pleasant company! -Andy

The series of solar sketches were great and not only represented the details seen visually nicely, but I also appreciate the amount of work and talent required to create them.
All of the images were nice, but to me there is more depth and content to explore in the nebula images as opposed to the Jupiter and M13 images. All three were much better than anything I could produce right now, but I chose PhilG's image solely because I haven't seen an image of the Cresent Nebula before, and it has a more unique structure than the other two.
Great work by all six of the finalists.

I also chose PhilG's NGC6888. That one was just too excellent, amongst a crowded field of great efforts. I also like the Aussie Phil22's nebula. Too bad he didn't tell us what it is. I also liked Mike Fubl's Lagoon Nebula. These really stand out, visually, but Jupiter's detail was also fantastic. M13's beauty & Erika's sketches show great artistry, but in the end, PhilG's breathtaking beauty was my choice. Great work, everyone.
