Welcome to the Messier Catalogue Project
This will be a long term and ongoing project to collect photos of all 110 Messier Objects. I would like to collect several photos of each object using various mediums. These don't have to be professional level photographs so don't be shy! If we can capture photos showing what you see visually, all the better! Please list the following information with each photo:
Your Full name Where you reside (Town and Country) Time and Date of the photo Equipment and processing used
We respectfully request that all work be original. I look forward to seeing what we can achieve! Tina

DO you want them posted here? I would recommend building a FORUM for just this collection, and then building a thread for each of the messiers! That way all the images will be posted in the proper thread. At the end we could decide which images will make up the catalogue. You could make each of the threads sticky and not allow any new threads to be created.
My opinion! Charles

Not if you are the moderator! I want to keep things right here for now. If it overgrows it boundaries I will consider moving it. Thanks for the suggestions.

Here is a pic I got on 4-3-04 around 9pm CST here in Iowa of Venus near M45. It is a 20 sec exposure at ISO 400 with a Canon 300D and a 300mm EOS lens.

What great pics these are! While I have no interest in ever getting into astrophotography, I can sure appreciate the effort put into creating these. My hat is off to everyone that has posted a picture in here.
The opening post mentioned that pics of what is seen visually were encouraged, and I agree that this would be a great idea. It would be really cool to be able to review a visual representation of what to expect, and then go out and compare it for yourself.
I hope that this project continues to completion.

M96 Galaxy in Leo
Usually seen with its two companions...M95 and 105. There was a lot of LP when I took this and very moist air. I took 70 some shots and had to throw away about 40....but this still left me with 30pics@4min each. I also left a little of the LP in, I didn't want to lose all of the little deep galaxies in the pic.

This was shot with the C8"SCT at F6.3. SXV-H9C.

Thanks Bud. Guiding was quite a chore. RA was done with a home made drive corrector. Dec adjstments were made by turning the slow motion knob on the fork arm! I had to keep reminding myself which way to turn the knob in order to correct the drift.
I'm very happy with how it turned out since it was my first attempt at long exposure.

Jason, beautiful shot.....I love the U2K...I mounted mine on a newer CGE mount, but I sure do miss the ability to push the mount around and it always remembers where it is. And I think the optics on these were some of the best they made for C8's.
Great detail in the image.

Bud,
Thanks! I got lucky that night
Yea, the U2K is a great scope. I cannot believe I can get the results I am with the drive. I have yet to try taking shots of objects with the 6.3 reducer. I may try soon. If I go more than two seconds on guiding, I get bad stars.
I will be getting an ED80 soon to keep her company.

M-17 Deep Exposure. Meade LXD75 8" f/4 SN Hand guided 80mm f/12 refractor 45 minutes on Fujicrome 400 Provira No computer/dark room editing No filters, uncropped
This shot of M-17 is unusual in that I exposed way longer than most, to grab the most faint details in this Ha Nebula. The Swan or Omega symbol is almost totaly gone, but the 3D effect of the whole nebula is fantastic!

Thanks!
This shot was imaged with the SN, and hand guided with an Orion 80mm guidescope. The uncropped image shows the wide field of view of the Meade LXD75 8" f/4 SN and the flatness of the field. Also I have done zero post processing on this slide. The colors you see are what this film offers naturaly.

OK, that one wasn't so great, especially at that size. Maybe this will redeem myself... Here is the Great Orion Nebula. This was taken quite a while ago, but I am still very proud of it, especially the effect I got while editing. By the way, the previous pic was taken with a Digi-T adapter to my EP. This one had the camera on a separate tripod aimed right down the EP's barrel. Tough setup. I tried some piggyback astrophotography years ago just to see if I liked it. I've since decided that I don't but here's a shot of M31 taken with a Pentax K1000 with a 28mm lens at f/1.5 with ISO200 film and a 5 minute exposure, taken from the top of Cadillac Mountain, Maine. The camera, by the way, was mounted on my old, old 60mm refractor on an EQ-1 mount. Not much but better than I expected.

Those are without a doubt the most beautiful pics ive ever seen. Does an APO have an edge over SCTs in photography?

Ok, I only saw 1 M40 posted, so here's mine. It's a lonely Messier, but worthy of note just for that.
Is there a list of all the M's posted so far? I have a bunch of them on my site, if you like I'll post as many as you guys can stand.
Here's my info: A single frame taken by me on July 31, 2007. Exposure 2 seconds at ISO 400. Celestron C102, 500mm, f/5. Canon XTI. Processed in Photoshop CS.
