Jupiter 08-05-08 double transit *Animation added**
      #2560858 - 08/05/08 12:27 AM

Ok, so this is just a teaser, but I'll have images posted shortly. Jupiter looks amazing on the sceen. Reminds me of 2010. Not only was there a double transit, but the GRS made an appearance. I was shooting sequences every 3 minutes, but I was just getting overloaded. I'm doing every 10 minutes now but I'm not sure if I'll get the entire transit or not. I half of it now. First image shortly, no chance of a gif tonight though.

Hi Joel, excellent shot of Ganymede and its shadow. I see Jupiter's brilliant cloud tops are making Callisto look dark, similar to sunspots appearing dark when they're not. The telescope view must be awesome! Cheers, Dan

Thanks Mike! I think I'm going to take my time on this animation. Might be a day or two. Mike, what do you think about the color result in these? Seems much more "vibrant" than my pervious results. Should I bring down the saturation some or leave it be?

Those last few are really good. I'd like to have a look at some of your raw data though.

Can you post (or email me) the result immediately after stacking, before any wavelets applied?

Mike, here is the result, color not tweaked, no wavelets, nothing. I drop the contrast down to 85, take blue down to 90, Green to 95. The only other thing I did in regards to color was increse the saturation in PSP8.

hmm the colour looks better in your unprocessed image than in your processed ones. I'm not sure if it's the decreasing of contrast that's doing it.

Also as i said in the email, your originals look overexposed. The raw frame above is showing it too. Do you use the histogram in IC Capture?

I sent you (via email) a first cut I processed up from the FIT files you sent me. The overexposed EQ zone sort of ruins it unfortunately. I have a feeling there's more you can do in the capture phase to avoid this.

Hello Lunatiki, very, very nice shots, what I'm looking is that your raw images are more or less like my best of the other day, the rim of the planet sharper, but the details are similar.

Now my questions, how do you align them in Registax (assuming you do it in Registax)? I place a box in the center of the planet that almost fills it but that doesn't gets out of it.

The second, what post process do you apply? Wavelets? Several iterations?

Man I'm really amazed with your "quick process"

Regards, Fernando

Thanks guys. Mike, I have indeed been running my gain higher than I had in the past, on the sliding scale, actually at about 95% from my previous 75% or so. I didn't like the dullness of my previous images and increasing it certainly brightened it up. As far as the color, I always thought the result, like the one I posted but hadn't messed with yet turned out too blue and that is why I dropped it two clicks. I tend to judge color being correct if the white bands of Jupiter are close to white with the least about of blue/green/red tinge possible. A big part of what I do for a living is matching colors. Perhaps I shouldn't try to get rid of the blueness? I also know that there is always a bit more detail hiding in my images, but I've always preferred to sacrifice a bit of detail for a more natuaral smooth appearance. Can't stand over processing! Next time I image I'll cut down the gain going by the historgram and leave the result color and see what I come up with. I'm anxious to try out your recommendations!

Fernando, I align the FIT files in Registax, like what you describe. I use K3ccd to sort and stack the avi, saving that result as a FIT file. I generally just use one wavelet to process to avoid noise and over-processing.

From my modest opinion you lose some blue after color adjusting, and I like to see the blue in the bright bands of jupiter.

What latitude is your site in Texas? It's amazing the resolution you get.

I much prefer the colour not adjusted one.

Have you looked on other monitors? It may be that your monitor colour calibration is out, so what appears ok to you, is too red for others.

I've learnt that my laptop displays things brighter and more blue than I'm used to, so sometimes I have to process it to look quite "off" on my laptop, but when I eventually see it on an LCD or monitor, it appears "just right".

I have 2 laptops and my desktop. I've looked at the images on each of them and they all appear the same to me. I went back into registax and increased the blue and green. What do you think of this one Mike? Thanks for your help. Evidently I need to change my thinking on Jupiter's colors.
