Well, this image was hard fought for. I'm not sure what was more annoying, the winds gusting to 25 mph or my wife letting my dogs out just when it looks like I will have a sequence w/o wind gusts. Needless to say, my dogs have to come visit me and my scope when we are set up. This is the first of about 6 sequences shot. Not sure how the others will turn out, but I'm very happy with this one. Europa is really shining bright and its shadow is crisp and clear. 1100 frames stacked. VERY little processing. Just one wavelet with no additional sharpening or noise removal in PSP. Comments appreciated. If any of the others top this one, I'll post them, otherwise, this is it.

Great look! Color balance is nice, did you do anything differently?

In registax I bumped up Blue by .05. Nothing else touched in regards to color/saturation. Perhaps I'm biased, but I think the DBK's result colors are just as good as the monochrome cameras.

This was the best of the group. I find it interesting that Europa's shadow doesn't appear exactly circular as it does in the image above, when it is closer to the CM. It is more of an oval in this one. I'm assuming that is natural due to the curvature of the planet towards the edge? First time I have ever picked something up like that. I'd appreciate any input on that.

you are cranking out some great stuff, Joel!
id say youre spot on with your reasoning about the shadow. heres a short animation showing the elongation on the rim. on nights of steady seeing ive been able to see this visually, also.

Thanks guys. I've been lucky with seeing (jet stream parked north). It does really make me wonder if I'm getting these results at less than 30 degrees, what would my results be if it were say at least 60 degrees overhead. I wonder how much of an improvement it would make.

Thanks guys. I came up with one more sequence that was decent so I put together this animation. Didn't turn out too bad.

I'm guessing most have bugged out of this thread by now, but since reprocessing that last image and getting a better result, I decided to redo my gif images and the gif itself. I did this animation a bit differently, mainly for the challenge and the practice. I think it is a great improvement from the one above. Mainly in regards to sharpness and noise.

Really great, Joel! I can tell you've been doing this for years, and enjoying every minute! I've been observing planets for 34 years and imaging for just one. It constantly amazes me how you and several of the other guys here can stack thousands of blurry images and come up with a sharp composite that has real scientific value. Keep up the good work. Regards, Dan
PS: I was just thinking the same thing, that you should do a correct orientation animation... I like it!

Love the animation. You're also getting some wonderful color, detail, contrast and softness! I'm wondering about the faint halo around the disk. It shows brighter in the animation, but is still in the man stills too. Not a dig or complaint, just wondering! I love the photos!

I just looked at in on another computer screen. Are you talking about the inner edges of the disc, not that outside? I think I see what you are talking about on the animation, a bit in the stills. If that is what you are talking about about, I think it is shadowing. I think the animation makes it look a bit weird. If you look at frame 3 in the animation, you'll see some green pixel-type flashes on the lower right of Jupiter that aren't there in the still, so some how the animation program is doing something to them.

Well, I looked at it from a 3rd computer screen, my wife's laptop, and I certainly do see a halo when I move the screen to the right angle. Anyone else seeing halos?

Mike, would you mind telling me if you see a halo on this gif that I went back and reworked?
web page
Man, that sucks. Just when you think you have a good image, other people might be seeing things that you are not! If you can't see it in that image, I know how to avoid it now, just have to add an extra step to processing now.

Joel, I can see a bit of halo in 3 of the 4 images of your last animation... just open your images with free photoeditor from microsoft and increase the gama to the maximum... you will clearly see them

Thanks! Man, that ticks me off. You think you have a good image, and I can't see that halo on 2 out of my 3 computers, but it is obviously seen by certain others. I do believe I've corrected it completely now
web page
I'm going to have to make that a part of my processing routine now, cranking up the gamma to see if there is a halo hiding from me. If you guys ever see stuff like that on my images, please point it out to me. I'd have never of seen it, and with some of my images I submit them for publication. Rather embarrassing submitting something with that big of a fault in it.
