Seeing was perfect this evening. These are some of my best images this season. There was suppose to be a quad transit tonight. I was just too tired to capture this event. So I imaged Rhea (right) and Dione (left) as they approach Saturn. Later on, Mimas and Enceladus joined the two ice moons to transit Saturn. The most prominent feature is the dark elongated barge on the SEBn. You can see it moving in the animation below. The SEB is also very well resolved. Note the faint reddish belt forming just below the ring shadow! Also the interesting white band between this belt and the SEB. The rings seem to be getting wider by the day. The Cassini division is now very prominent.
Check out my animation at:

Chris,
Excellent image, as usual, and nice to see you posting here again.
I was curious about one detail that is present in all three of the images. There is a slight brightening of perhaps 5 or 10 percent at the outer edge of the B ring, just as it approaches Cassini's Division. Do you think this is a real feature, or is it an artifact of sharpening at a bright-dark boundary? Thanks.

Thanks! I'm not really sure about the brightening of the B ring. It would probably be an artifact.

Chris, excellent detail & colors! With my DMK21/C11 at f25 with max gain and 15fps I can only achieve approx 65% on the IC2 log brightness histogram for Red. To go higher, I've had to increase gamma and ended up with washed out images.
What histogram level do you usually capture at and do you sometimes boost the gamma during capture? Your images are always consistent for showing tremendous faint detail. Thanks for posting here, I look forward to your upcoming Jupiter shots

Thanks! Steve, I use 90% gain on R at 15fps. I think my transparency is better that yours as I am imaging Saturn basically at the zenith! I don't adjust the gamma settings and just leave it at default.

Thanks Chris for that information. I image with gamma at 100 and I do not have much banding colors showing. I'm planning to bring the gamma down to 90 so the banding might show up more colorfull. My Gain setting are around 650 at 15 fps. But let's not confuse each other, I use a DFK21 color camera. Thinking of getting the skynyx for better results, mono with filters.

Chris, last time out I tried to push to f/30 and ended up at 120% gamma/100% gain to get a decent histogram but the image had too much noise. I'll stay with f/25 & default gamma. Thanks for the advice

Just curious, what software are you using to capture? I'm using ICCapture and I don't have any gamma setting. I only have brightness and gain.

Chris, I am using the USB version of the DMK21 with the IC2 AS capture software which allows adjustment of gamma. Attached is a screen shot my my DMK software capture page. Maybe your firewire software is different from USB or maybe you could just update your driver. By the way, I have not tried boosting the brightness beyond the default value of 0, have you?
Regards,
Steve

Wow, gain at 1000 + that must be noisy ?
with my DFK I try to keep it as low as possible like 650 - 700 at 15 fps and gamma 95-100. (DFK = color version).
Using the brightness control at 0 or up does not have any effect in my settings.

Steve, I'm using an older version of IC capture. I might move up to this version as it looks better. My gain setting is between 970 to 1023 depending on the filter. My brightness setting is at 130. The older version doesn't have gain control.
Todd, yes I'm dreaming of a C14. Just no budget for that now with the economy turning sour and we're expecting another child.
