Jupiter impact, June 3 2010
      #3845244 - 06/03/10 05:22 PM

Morning all :-)

This is not a hoax, at approximately 20:30utc this morning I recorded a large fireball on Jupiter, it lasted a couple of seconds and was very bright.

I have it recorded on video :-) I'm at Trevors place at the moment, using his internet, I'll put together a short video later.

This was a large fireball, but it doesn't seem to have left any mark, probably all gone in the upper atmosphere before it reached the clouds.

How exciting!

cheers, Bird

Now that sounds sweet, you seem to attract those kind of things on Jupiter... I wonder how you do that

I can't wait to see the images though!

Hi Bird

This is the second time within in a year you are taking my sleep away. Although I can't observe Jupiter from my location, I think I'll stay up and watch your post.

Congrats from Denmark.

I'm in chock over the results your are making. You are my astro hero

Great work, Bird! I was wondering if anyone would ever capture a transient event while imaging a planet. I should have known better

Congratulations!

Wayne

Chris Go apparently saw it too!

But it looks like that side of Jupiter will rotate around to the night side before Jupiter rises in CA. Maybe Saturday morning?

That's just awesome Bird!!! Just saw the video on spaceweather.com. Unbelievable!!! Why is it that everything seems to happen on the other side of the planet?

It's also kinda funny that this is happening on the same day as the press release saying last years impact was a rouge asteroid.....

My thoughts exactly!

I figured this on my own, probably wrong but...

IF, BIG IF!

If the impact is System2 and it's near CM33 - ~50* then it would be near SysII CM342
Here's what I calculate for next appearances:

WinJUPOS 8.3.0 (Jupiter), C.M. transit times, 2010/06/03 21:26
Object longitude: L2 = 342.0 + 0.0000/d * (T - 2000 Jan 01.5)
Time interval: 2010 Jun 03.0 ... 2010 Jul 01.0
Output format: Date UT (C.M. of System 2)

Awesome!

Not sure If I am going to be able to do any Jupiter observing in the morning, or Sat morning (weather is supposed to suck) but I'm going to give it a try.

Maybe it may be a good idea for some of us to try the daylight imaging techniques! Like other said, maybe there will be some further impacts to come.
