Jupiter in perfect seeing, August 30
      #4016785 - 08/31/10 01:05 AM Attachment (839 downloads)

Last night was one to remember for me - I got to see what Jupiter must look like from space... on a scale of 1 to 10 this seeing was a 12...

Another 350Gb of data recorded over 4 hours... the best seeing lasted about an hour around 2am, I *definitely* need a larger mirror. sigh.

Here is one image from the period of best seeing ... the processing doesn't do justice to the raw video, I'll be coming back to do this properly later on when I'm not working from a laptop.

You can see the GRS setting at lower right, and lots of lovely detail, all of this was sharply defined in the raw video. I've also left this image a bit brighter than my last few, I hope this is an improvement.

cheers, Bird

Outstanding Bird! The title of your post says it all.
Any chance you could post some of the raw video? I'd love to see what perfect seeing is like (not to mention what perfect seeing through your setup looks like!)

Brad

Blowing it up to 150% just on the lappy screen this is staggering - (200% was just too big to fit the lappy's 17" widescreen!!!)

That is absolutely stunning! Well done! Do you think this approached the limit your aperture can handle? Even if it did, images like those would satisfy me for a lifetime!

P.

Thanks guys, yes this is the most my aperture can deliver... and the first processing above really doesn't do it justice. I'll have a link to a video in a while so you can see for yourself :-)

Darryl, this all went through registax at 150% sized, and then I scaled it down before posting....

I know I can get a better result still if I send it through upscaled by 300%, but it takes pretty much all day to process one image.

cheers, Bird

Superb! I think with more aperture and seeing like that you might need a bigger ccd! Amazing image Anthony!

Glenn

Congratulations Bird on this incomparable image, just had a look at your repro on IIS and if that isn't the best Jupiter image ever taken from Earth I'll go heave.

Stunning.

Trevor

Well, that would be a matter of opinion I think Trevor. Taking nothing away from Anthony here you understand, but I think Damian peach still has that honour safely under his belt.

"I *definitely* need a larger mirror." - quote of the day, or decade The IR image shows nice details of the GRS. I wonder if an animation centered on GRS would show some spinning and cloud mixing like in the Voyager data

Kecktastic, Asimov!
Neither of the two mentioned contenders - take a look at these images ! (Be sure to scroll a little down to see the color image). In my estimate, better than 0.2" resolution, compared to the approx. 0.3" of Bird's and Damian's best efforts.
Of course, no wonder that 1 meter F/17 Cassegrain has the edge...

But with 37 cm... what an image!!! Congratulations, Bird!

Ralph

What is "the best" picture?
It doesn't matter; it is just beautiful, awesome, clearly a hall of famer.

congrats and thanks for sharing.

Oh, BTW, if you don't have enough room for the new mirror, I'll be glad to "keep" your current one with me...
