Here's my Thanksgiving day Jupiter image. It was the first night of good seeing we've had in about two months. Boy has Jupiter grown since then. When I first put my 18mm eyepiece in and saw the GRS and Io transit in place, my jaw about dropped. I can say it was the best view I have ever seen...so 3 dimensional looking to see Io popping out in front of Jupiter. It will be a Thanksgiving morning to remember.
I had a hard time putting the eyepiece away but was rewarded with some great imaging time. I've been traveling all day so this was edited on my laptop in the car...but I think it turned out well.
This was taken at 8:24UT with the C14 flea3.
Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. It's been a tough year for me but I still have plenty to be thankful for! Thanks for looking

Wow Brad you hit it bigtime with this image. After 2 months you must have had heart palpitations! We should all get seeing like this at least once an apparition! Wishing you all the best and I hope you are getting along better. I still consider the C14 a small scope, but it does take some effort to heft it onto a mount.
Congratulations!
Best wishes, Glenn

You've just proven that "textbook perfect" and "Brad perfect" are one and the same! I'm so glad to see you get out there again. And I want to thank you for bringing the Scope Buggy to my attention in September. If it weren't for that I never would have bought my wheeley bars which enabled me to move my scope outside my condo building on a regular basis and image Jupiter at 70 degrees elevation. The old images I captured from my balcony at 40 degrees elevation pale by comparison.

Thank you guys for your comments! I can only make do with what the atmosphere gives me...and seeing really did cooperate that night. When I get home tomorrow, I am going to process another one to see if it's any better. I also have some ganymede data to process.
Also I figured I'd ask here, but has anyone had any problems with dew inside their scts recently (on the inside of the corrector)? I've never had this problem before...but recently I've seen it twice. I use a homemade lymax cooler and I think it might be the culprit, but it works too well to give up. Any ideas for solutions?

Glenn: Yeah I also considered the C14 small until this year! I still can't lift the ota yet, but thanks to my scopebuggy I don't need to!
Paul: Thanks for the words of wisdom...and I have to agree with you. This year will definitely end better then it started!
Pete: Glad I could help with you getting your wheelie bars. It's amazing how some simple tools like that can help us bring our scopes out much more often and easily. Hope to see some of your images soon!

Hi Brad - I have had condensation on the inside of the corrector once, and also thought it was on the inside quite a few times more than that..!
Remember that these scopes aren't airtight so what gets in can get out; on that occassion I left it outside uncovered and the day temp/warmth drove the moisture out of the tube and the problem didn't re-occur.....but indoors in a warmed room should be just as effective.

ps: those times I "thought" it was on the inside were probably incorrect assumptions.....but it did take considerably longer to get the "frosted" appearance off of the c/p so maybe it really was on the inside - if that view was the actual case it must've meant the c/p was warmed enough to dissipate the water vapour inside. (they ain't real thick glass!)
Condensation allways occurs on the coldest parts which is why with the peltier cooling I had on the old C11, no condensation occured anywhere except on the rear casting behind the primary...

I got condensation all over the inside of a C11 once using my Lymax. In high humidity and dropping temps, I think this is a real risk. I don't think there's any way to avoid it - you just can't use it in those conditions. Since I'm permanently setup anyway, I haven't used the Lymax much since this happened.

Brad, to echo everyone else, amazing. I'm just in from a holiday trip and am blown away by this image.
I got condensation on the inside of my C8 a few times on really cold and humid nights (which is a fairly rare combination). I found a hair dryer would still take care of it, though it took longer and you don't really dry out the inside of the tube, so the dew comes back. I always just brought the OTA into a house - drier air - and then tried to keep it sealed as much as possible outside.
IOW, it's a pain and I don't think there are any quick fixes.
But, if you get images like this with humid air on the inside, I may add some drops of water to my OTA.

Brad,
Phenomenal image!! Really awesome detail!! Couple of questions?
1. Was this a composite? I don't see where IO transit and the GRS were in that position on Thanksgiving morning.....based on Jupiter 2 program...
I was out thanksgiving night and got a shot of the GRS.....but..not much of a morning person.
2. What camera did you actually shoot with?
I'm still using an old Toucam pro but getting that kind of detail on the Toucam is only a dream... at least for me. I'm looking to get something with better resolution. I haven't been doing any astrophotography for the last couple of years and now that I'm getting back into it, I would like to have something to get some better planetary shots. Detail like your shot is what I would like to be able to do so I'm really interested in what you are shooting with or any suggestions you might have.
Thanks,
Bill G.

Thanks for the info on the dew guys. Yeah my biggest problem was just what to do once it already starts to dew up inside the ota. The hair dryer does get rid of it...but by the time the entire dew shield heats up enough to dry it off the thermal equilibrium seems to be shot for a long time. I think I will just monitor my cooler use on very damp nights and hopefully that will help.
Bill: Thanks for your words..glad you liked it. This shot was not a composite (well it actually was but only for the sake of processing) It was taken on the morning of thanksgiving...maybe you were checking on the morning after? The camera I used was a flea3 mono camera. It has the same chip as the dmk618 mono camera...but with the large advantage in that you can capture at any framerate you like, not just 30fps or 60fps. Good luck and feel free to ask if you have any other questions!

Here is an image of Ganymede I made the same morning. The seeing was still very good for this one. I am comparing it to an image I got from the NASA JPL site and then blurred to reach the same detail level. I think this is my best effort at moon detail yet. Notice the big dark patch at the bottom left of the disc which gives the disc a slight phase.
I made this using a blend of the green and blue channels. It was a 1.5x drizzle made using AS2!
It was taken on 11/22/12 at 8:48UT if you wanna see a higher res version of the jpl simulation.
JPL is on the left, my version is on the right.

Brad, Thanks for the info. It's been awhile since I've been doing any photography...or even observing. I saw the Flea 3 in your signature info...and had no clue what it was. Last time out before Thanksgiving night was about 3 years ago...I've been using a Toucam. After seeing the astonishing image you got....time to upgrade!!
Hope you don't mind if I ask some questions if/when I do upgrade.
...as far as the Jupiter 2....looked again at the morning of the 22nd. Still don't see it. I must have something configured wrong...
Thanks, Bill
