Plato under high sun!
      #5757242 - 03/25/13 11:31 PM

SO heres an image of Plato and the Straight range with a relatively high sun angle. The prime day to try and shoot for craterlets in Plato would have been the night before so I was shocked to see how many I had captured!

One thing I am noticing with this ASI camera is that I can process the final stack far more aggressively than with my old camera, plus with almost no artifacts creeping in!

http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/7995/platoas2.jpg

Again, 18" Starmaster dob, ASI120MM camera, R/IR filter 2.5X's powermate, stack of 350 out of 3200 frames.

cheers

Mike

Amazing Mike! When you shoot with 4x, NASA will decommission the LRO.

Thanks again everyone!! I had to buy a WD 2nd hard drive for my Lenovo laptop (7200rpm 750Gb) just cause ithink theres going to be a lot of video captures in the next couple months!

Robert maybe in a few years I will have enough to publish something, but to tell you the truth I enjoy the more informal online approach!

Sedat: well I don't think anyone here on earth will ever get to the 65M resolution of the LRO, I think the ESO 8 meter got to 170M res using adaptive optics, but maybe they should let the so called "amatuers" try with one of Sams cameras!!

Mike

Hi Mike,

Outstanding work!

We will have to count the craterlets on Plato's floor and see what we come up with and then keep this tally as a world record to shoot for with 18" and smaller scopes!

Congratulations on a masterpiece!

Best wishes, Dan

Thanks Dan! How many craterlets did you count? My friend Wes Higgins did an amazing shot (bigger image scale) with his 18" scope some years back:

http://higginsandsons.com/astro/Pictures-iin-templets/Plato-08-03-07.htm

And of course the record for highest res Plato has to go to Jean Luc Dauvergne using the 1 meter Pic Du Midi scope, but thats hardly an "amateur" instrument

Mike, wonderful image. As it happens, I'm processing a similar image and wonder if you would share what gain you were using? My image seems noisier than yours with many more frames.
