You're right I did have to see that. Is it me or can you see relief in the clouds? Its a beautiful age when an amateur can take images like that. A C-11 no less. Im flabbergasted. UnsharpMask it, it'll blow your mind.

Holy SH*&!
That image was even taken at 1/33 sec!!
He says that the seeing wasn't even that great!
I feel so inadequate...sniff...
***EDIT***
I smply ran the image through Registax and hit the RGB shift and just a little wavelets. WOWIEE!!!!

I couldnt resist, and so I loaded that image into astra-image and applied a little deconvolution. Now I can see a couple of interesting things...
There is a vertical seam running down that image, just to the left of the white storm that is second from the left.
If you haven't seen deconvolution in action, you should install Astra Image (it's free for evaluation), load that image, split it into 3 grey images and then apply 5 turns of LR deconvolution with PSF of about 1.6 pixels.
Recombine the grey images into a colour image and prepare to be impressed :-)

Well, normally I wouldnt want to post someone elses work - especially if I have made changes to it!
But, with attribution to Jose Suro and without his permission, I'll post it anyway :-)
Just for the record, the original is here:
http://www.buytelescopes.com/gallery/view_photo.asp?pid=2208
And I have attached a copy, modified as follows:
- loaded into astra image, split into 3 grey images
- LR deconvolution: 7 steps, PSF 1.7 pixels
- recombined into colour image.
No other processing.
**EDIT** oops - that was a litle large, here's a smaller one :-)
**EDIT** I just tried another LR setting and got better results, so I've changed this post and the image...

I had discovered this site last december. Before then, I had taken just 1 picture of the Moon though my department 5" telescope (I teach physics, but I am definitely NOT an astronomer). It was a rude reminder of what it means to be a good experimenter. I went out and bought myself a telescope (a 6" for now and I will not be satisfied until I can get something at least in the same ballpark as Mr. Suro. If you really want to be "sucker-punched", take a look at this Mars: http://web.tampabay.rr.com/jsuro/mars-08272003.htm Marco

I think that Mr. Suro has combined great imaging skill with an observing location with seeing most of us can only dream about. Quite a few of the "world class" pics I see are taken at places near the ocean. Hopefully, this kind of seeing visits all of us from time to time.

Super images! Looks like someone got themselves a very special mirror. That kinda detail sure doesnt come from the camera or software! Have to be able to collect the data before you can process it!

Looking carefully at the image it's evident that the instrument has a really nice mirror and is very well collimated.
I'd suggest that only a slight miscollimation is needed to turn that image into one that has 1/4 of the detail...

I've noticed the same thing. Chris Go's images from the Philippines and someone else from French Polynesia come to mind. In what way would the oceans proximity affect the seeing?
