Important Holbrook Publication new [Re: PhilCo126]
      #2913246 - 02/07/09 11:21 AM Attachment (111 downloads)

Here is a online version of the famous 1912 Foote article titled "Preliminary note on the shower of meteoric stones near Holbrook..."

http://tinyurl.com/dj32mp

It it through the work of Warren M. Foote that most of our fresh Holbrook peas were collected shortly after they fell.

Maybe we should plan a July 19th party at Holbrook in three years?

Here's a pic from the article of 360 "Peas"

"Meteorite Craters" by Kathleen Mark is an informative and detailed work on the world's major meteorite craters and the controversy surrounding their acceptance by the scientific community. There are numerous references to the work of Nininger and a lot of good photos. It's published by the University of Arizona press - which publishes a lot of geology and meteorite titles.

Thank you!The photos and written description make it very
clear on the many differences on fusion crust.
Your knowledge will be a great help and benefit to "Space Rocks".

Just heard from Kevin Kichinka that he has less than 50 copies left of the well-illustrated "The Art of Collecting Meteorites" ...

Another well-illustrated book:
METEORITES, Their Impact on Science and History
Edited by Brigitte Zanda & Monica Rotaru
Book has a nice historic overview of meteorite falls (Ensisheim 1492, Lucé 1777, Siena 1794, L'Aigle 1803,...) and chapters on paleontological facts, mineralogy, isotopic analysis and classification of meteorites.

Thanks for posting that book info. I have the book from a while ago, but only recently acquired a crusted slice of Lucé. Now I need to go back and read about it. I like it when a text reference breaths new life into a specimen.

I bet it would have helped in my article about Lucé:

Photo of two excellent booklets:

the well known " Art of collecting meteorites " by Kevin Kichinka with chapters on planning a collection, meteorite hunting expeditions and a historical timeline with meteorite events...

a German language softcover " Meteorite - Boten aus dem Weltall " (Meteorites - Messengers from Space) with excellent color photos of meteorites and color photos of craters all over the world, especially interesting old photos of the Hoba meteorite in Namibia
