Hi Michael!
Welcome to Cloudy Nights and the Space Rocks forum.
I have enjoyed your POD work for a long time now, and when CN started this new meteorite forum, I thought it would be a perfect fit. I am so glad you approve.
Now that you are here, just be careful, because we might talk your ear off!
Regards and clear skies,
MikeG
PS - I need to post the June 1st POD! I almost forgot.

Michael,
Welcome, but your RSPOD has been costly to me-the beautiful LDG image in May pushed me over the edge to buy a big chunk from MikeG; and this probably will not be the last RSPOD stimulated meteorite buy.

that last post i bet that guy was surprized when he found this in his shipment almost like finding a rare stamp when you buyy a lot of them. doc read the books Comptons encylopedia on meteorites and the authors i think it was called rocks from space i liked them both one day i want to get them for reference perhaps when they go on sale somewhere? will keep my eyes out for them. i got a sample from a friend the other day my first meteorites they are UNWA unclassified from Morrocco and looked at them through my microscope a 50 x one i use for my tarantula sexing and they were so cool... doc

For some reason, I cannot find the links to the RSPOD for June 9th and June 10th. I never received the link in my usual emails and it's not in the archive yet. As soon as I get them, I will repost them here.
Meanwhile, here is the latest - a nice cross polarized microscope photo of the angrite D'Orbigny. I have a piece of D'Orbigny in my personal collection.

I agree Carol. Etched irons are one of my favorites. The coarse octahedrites have "fat" lines in their widmanstatten patterns. Medium or fine octahedrites (and some hexahedrites) have very thin lines in their patterns. Generally, I prefer the thinner lines, like those seen in etched Gibeon. Although from time to time I see an interesting etched Campo or Diablo that has some inclusions or other traits that add to the overall pattern. You never really know what you have until you cut it open and etch it. One slice from a given meteorite might show a perfect smooth face with widmanstatten lines, while another slice from the same meteorite might be polka-dotted with silicate or carbonate inclusions. Each one is unique.

This is a textbook example of the following descriptive terms used for meteorites : orientation, heat-shield, nose-cone, atmospheric ablation.
