We're working on completing our donation to the kids raffle, an 8" F/4.5 based on our new Solid Tube Series (STS) line of scopes. The mirrors originally came from an old red tube Coulter, but were recently salvaged, recoated by Majestic Optical Coatings here in Jersey (yes, Alan, I've spoken with them about getting a booth at NEAF...the owner is strongly considering it) and will be freshened up with a brand new Dob Mount, new powder coated aluminum OTA with velvet lining, a super smooth helical focuser, a more open mirror cell and all the fit/finish typical of our standard STS scopes. I know of at least one parent who will probably buy 100 raffle tickets for this so he and his son can both have Teeter's Telescopes! (ahem, BSim).
Looking forward to another great NEAF,

I keep emailing Hubble Optics to send out their new 16" dob so everyone can touch it...
I guess they don't really want to sell them...

You should really make the NEAF into the NWAF. We get no love in the northwest :-(. Some day I'll be there. It always looks so exciting and fun. I guess I'll be watching the feeds again. Hope you all have fun and spend alot of money on all your cool new stuff.

Will there be any special pricing or sales at NEAF? There hasn't been any sales in eyepieces, mounts, or telescopes since April of 2011. Christmas 2011 was a no show for vendor specials. All We have seen are 7-15% price increases for about a year for all the useful gear. I am trying to determine if it's worth going to buy eyepieces, mounts, accessories, or even another scope if the pricing is right. For example will we see $700 off a TMB130SS type of sale like we did in early 2011?... Will Tele Vue have a sale to their previous regular price?... This will be my first time, I am just trying gauge if it's worth driving 300 miles if there are sales or deals there, or it's only to see and touch new stuff?!
Thanks.

My wife just bought airplane tickets for me and my daughter to go to Newark to see my sister on Friday. 3 of us will go to NEAF on Saturday! I cant wait to meet Astronomic, CN, Dave E. from Astronomy magazine, IDA, and S & T magazine in person. I would check out Sky Shed Pods that I plan to buy one for my second home and meet some astronomers to discuss about my DSLR for astrophotographs! See all telescopes, eyepieces and lot more! I cant wait to go to NEAF 2012!

I’ve never seen a major equipment maker (Televue, Celestron, etc) selling stuff at NEAF. If they did, they’d be cutting into the sales of their vendor stores. You need to buy from the “stores” like OPT or Astronomics who will have large set-ups there, and they often offer 'NEAF special' pricing.
Televue has in the past sold “blems” at NEAF, but they don’t seem to do that any more. Don Yeier of VERONscope often has some “blems” for sale. APM sometimes has some great prices (but high-end stuff). Nevertheless there are always good deals at NEAF, but the main reason for going (beyond the social, attending the great presentations, the good chances at great raffle prizes, and the solar viewing) is that you get to see and play with all of the ‘goodies’, and you can discuss it all with the makers and fellow astro-nuts. Can you really live with a C-14? Come to NEAF and see one. How does TheSky work? Ask Tom Bisque to show you. What eyepieces should you have? Ask Al Nagler. etc
....and if you buy at NEAF, you don't have to pay for shipping or wait to get your item ....but then any damage in transport will be your own fault!

You can see, touch, and drool to your heart's content -- PLUS you can also buy. NEAF is a selling show. There have always been special prices at the show and many exhibitors carry these prices on their web sites for everyone.
Depending on how deep your pockets are, you could walk away with some fantastic gear at great savings. Most of the vendors would rather sell you the gear at a discount than pack and ship it back home. If you are looking for something in particular, it probably wouldn't hurt to call and make sure the exhibitor is bringing one.
April 2012 will be my fifth trip to NEAF and I always spend a few hundred dollars more than I planned.
Cheers,
Ron

Stellarvue sold everything they brought last year or close to it. I bought my Raptor from Vic himself(at a great price)but I did go to OPT to do the paperwork. Al Nagler said it had become too much of a madhouse of people trying(fighting)to get his blems so he quit bringing them.

Didn't APM have a 10-inch APO year-before-last? ...including something like a 6-inch APO guide scope? I seem to remember it as a real monster on an AP 3600 mount.
I don't think the 40" has a real mirror in it, just a piece of plate glass. He had the same scope at Cherry Springs last year.
One year John Vogt had his ATM 32-inch on display. I’ve observed thru this scope a number of times over the years at Stellafane and Cherry Springs and I consider it the best Dob I’ve ever seen. It was featured in the PBS film “Seeing in the Dark”.
OGS had a 25-inch RC Cass on an OGS fork mount a few years ago - somewhere in the quarter million dollar range - used! Don't ask how much OGS charges for the 40-inch RC and mount....
Gotta also mention the 152mm solar h-alpha and Roland's 10-inch Mak on his AP 3600 mount.
Then there was a Meade 20-inch SCT and Planewave DK Cass somewhere in the 25-inch range.....
Plenty of big scopes to see at NEAF!

Funny. Not exactly the story I have heard from TeleVue or read here on CN. As relayed to me, the reason for the lack of blems from TeleVue is that the optical house QC has gotten so good that blems don't often make it to to TeleVue. The few they find when assemblying the eyepieces are not worth selling at NEAF.
I do not ever remember witnessing a fight in the TeleVue line... A mad dash for prime position, but no pushing or shoving.
I do miss the sale.

Here is the information about our Sunday workshop with the amazing Mr Tom Field.World expert on Spectroscopy
Title: “You Can Almost Touch the Stars!” – 2 hours in duration (including one break) Even if you wanted to touch a star, they are impossibly distant. But despite the great distances, researchers have learned a great deal about quite a few stars. How? The most common method used to study the stars is called spectroscopy, which is the art and science of analyzing the colorful rainbow spectrum produced by a prism-like device. Until recently, spectroscopy was too expensive and too complicated for all but a handful of amateurs. Today, though, new tools make spectroscopy accessible to almost all of us. You no longer need a PhD, dark skies, long exposures, or enormous aperture! With your current telescope and FITS camera (or a simple web cam or even a DSLR without a telescope) you can now easily study the stars yourself. Wouldn’t you like to detect the atmosphere on Neptune or the red shift of a quasar right from your own backyard?! This hands-on workshop is for amateurs who want to learn from scratch how to do spectroscopy. Bring your Windows laptop. You’ll learn how to process and interpret both your own spectra and even professional spectra that you download from the web. You’ll learn how to calibrate and adjust for instrument response. Even if you never plan to capture a spectrum yourself, you’ll gain an understanding how the “pros” do it. This will bring a new depth to both your visual observing and of your appreciation of the skies. Tom Field of Field Tested Software will be conducting this workshop. He’s the author of the RSpec software (www.rspec-astro.com). Sky & Telescope magazine published Tom’s article on spectroscopy last August and they awarded his software their “Hot Product 2012” award earlier this year . If you mean use a credit card to purchase equipment then yes most vendors accept them. I am not certain if you can use a credit card to pay for admission to the show though. I am sure Alan will chime in on this.

Dear adoring public,
Steph will be manning (womanning?) the CN booth and web cam once again this year.
She promises not to refer to herself in the third person any more, outside of this post.
Maybe.

About the credit card info:
I had a problem with Williams optics not accepting the full amount on my credit card. They could not tell me why they had such a policy. I convinced them to write up most of it, but they insisted on cash for the rest. There is an ATM at the location and to my surprise, I took out $550 in cash from it in one transaction. Now I know I probably shouldn't have told anyone this as it is a bit "tempting", but I was able to purchase a scope from WO with the additional cash. So to some it up, not ALL venders will accept CC, at least not fully, but most vendors have the ability to do so.

I’m surprised that William Optics did not send him to one of their usual “stores” to buy the item on CC. Generally the makers do not sell at NEAF, but refer you to one of the “stores” that carry their items. As others have pointed out, there are exceptions. Two years ago I purchased the ES127ED demo scope (figuring that they would not show a defective scope at NEAF), but I had to buy it thru one of the stores.
Back “in the old days” the Televue ‘blems’ were “cash only” – and “as is – no returns”. I got some nice Naglers and other stuff at that sale. I never could discover if anything was really wrong with them and I still use ‘um. However, I did hate carrying a wad of money to the show.
Last year I did get Al Nagler and PaulD to autograph the blue box of my newly purchased Paracorr II. Paul said: “Why did he sign it??? I’m the one who designed it!!”

Happy to announce that NEAF 2012 has signed a deal with CBS Radio in NYC to advertize the show on the radio, reaching over 3.5 million listeners every week. Meeting was like a mini solar star party. Everyone at CBS fell in love with viewing our closest star! And will be attending the show.

+1 Alan! I hope the extra exposure helps make this the busiest NEAF yet!
Unfortunately, the Backyard Observatories crew won't be there this year. First time since 02. We have to head down to FL and then TX and NM this week and there was no way to schedule things otherwise.
We're sure going to miss everyone! NEAF is something we really look forward to every year.

Yes.
Entering the campus (From College Road), turn right at the stop sign. Follow that road all the way around to the back. The west parking lot is huge and there's plenty of room. You'll be dry camping, so empty the waste tanks and top off on water and propane. Generators are OK.
If your GPS suggests turning onto Spook Rock Road, decline the invitation and go on to College Road.
This is my 5th, and I stayed there the 1st 2 years (when NEAIC was on campus).

Here is the abstract for Dr Mark Clampin's talk.
Exploring Extrasolar Planetary Systems: New observations of extrasolar planets enabled by the James Webb Space Telescope
The search for extrasolar planets has been increasingly success over the last few years. In excess of 700 systems are now known, and Kepler has ~2500 additional candidate systems, yet to be confirmed. Recently, progress has also been made in directly imaging extrasolar planets, both from the ground and in space. In this presentation will discuss the techniques employed to discover planetary systems, and highlight the capabilities, enabled by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). JWST is a large 6.5 meter aperture infrared telescope that is scheduled for launch in 2018, and will allow us to transition to characterizing the properties of these extrasolar planets and the planetary systems in which they reside.

Get off the NYTW (I-87) at exit 14-B. Stay in the center lane (the right disappears just north of the interchange). Airmont Road becomes Highview after the curve. Stay on it to the traffic light at College Road.
Note that if you come across the Tappan Zee Bridge, you'll get nicked a few bucks ($5 for my 28' motorhome) for a couple of miles on the N Y Thruway, but that's still the quickest from the Maritimes.

Also consider Mass Pike interstate 90 to I 84 and pick up the NY Thruway I87 in Newburgh.
Cheaper toll crossing the Hudson and way less traffic than the tappan zee.
Ask a local for directions.

Just a quick note that rather than conducting my spectroscopy workshop at NEAF on Sunday at 9am, I'll be giving an introductory talk on spectroscopy. (See attachment for details)
This free presentation is entitled "You Can Almost Touch the Stars. No advanced registration is required. I'll be covering a bit of the history and science of spectroscopy, with the majority of my talk discussing exciting examples spectra from small backyard telescopes. The talk concludes with a "How to get started" and resources overview.
We haven't updated the NEAF page yet to reflect the change, but here's the original workshop description: http://www.rocklandastronomy.com/neaf/workshops.html
For those of you who aren't all that familiar with spectroscopy, you might refer to my article in the August 2011 issue of Sky & Telescope. Or, take a look at the great article in the current Astronomy Technology Today. There's a pdf link to the full article at the top of this page: www.rspec-astro.com/news. You'll see that it's far easier to do science than you might think. Your current CCD FITS or webcam and a DSLR is all you need!
Hope to see you at 9am. If I can't make you (and your son or daughter) laugh during my presentation, I'll personally buy you a soft drink after the talk!
Tom Field
Field Tested Software
PS If you can't make the session at NEAF, come by the booth, or invite me to speak to your club: www.rspec-astro.com/outreach.

I've done both, and prefer the Newburgh crossing too (Have a good friend that lives in Newburgh), but it is longer. IIRC, my motorhome NYTW toll from Newburgh to Suffern was $1.65. It's certainly a much more scenic route with far less traffic.

More like someone about to pass out from exhaustion... Been working like crazy the last couple of weeks and even took this entire week off from my day-job to spend all of that time in the shop prep'ing scopes for display in my booth. NEAF feels more and more like a Finish Line that I'm trying to cross. Once we get passed it, I'll be able to breathe again.
See you all up there! Take care,

I couldn't have said it any better Rob. This will be Dark Skies Apparels first NEAF and Anja and I are extremely excited about it. We've been running around like sprayed roaches for the last two weeks trying to finalize everything for our booth.
We'll also be unveiling our newest line of vests so we're excited about that too!
So to everyone, be sure to stop by the booth right across from Televue and say hello. We can't wait to meet everyone!

I hear ya. NEAF is sure a big effort for all of the vendors. We “astronomers” certainly appreciate all of the effort from both vendors and organizers.
A friend co-owns one of the CCD camera companies and he has to do both NEAIC and NEAF and will be there most of the week! He’s asked me to help his guys and himself to move their stuff from one event venue to the other – which I’ll do since he lets me use one of their cameras at times (we image together often), and many of their employees are members of them same astro club as I am.

I decided late to go to NEAIC and NEAF late. I called the hotel, the old Holiday Inn where I'd stayed before, but found they were fully booked for at least two days of the 4 day conference. I saw the post about RVs being allowed in the parking lot so instead of flying, I made the two day trip in my star party astronomy van. When I got to the hotel, the Crown Plaza Hotel and Conference center it dawned on me that the RV post was probably for NEAC at the Rockland Community College and not for the NEAIC part of the conference. I checked with the desk clerk who called her manager. She told me I was welcome in the parking lot. That was a pleasant surprise. Later that day I emailed a friend to find out when they were arriving, and found I'd made an error thinking the conference was Wednesday through Saturday instead of Thursday through Sunday. I ate supper and had a beer at the hotel restaurant.
About 9pm the parking lot watchman came by and asked if everything was OK, I told him my story, talked about astronomy a bit, likelihood of aliens visiting, I showed him astronomy pictures on the iPad, etc. At midnight I was awakened by the watchman who said the night manager didn't know anything about it. As requested I went in to see the night person. He refused to shake hands, didn't introduce himself which kind of set the tone of things. He, said I could not be in the parking lot and would have to leave. Since it didn't totally surprise me I said no problem and promptly went to the van started the engine, turned on the headlights, and was plugging the GPS into the cigarette lighter. The watchman came up tapped on the window and said "you aren't going to be long are you, they're calling the police".
It doesn't surprise me they don't want people staying in the parking lot, in fact I was surpised when told it was OK.
So the day people at the hotel are nice, the restaurant ribs and beer special is OK at $20, management communication is nonexistant, the night watchman is very nice and interested in astronomy, and the night manager is a bit of a pill and probably best avoided.
Otherwise I'll see you guys at the meetings.

It's actually not that bad truth be told.. All depends on what you get really.. As far as Sunday, I THINK they're open for awhile, but not as long as Saturday..
A few years back Rusty parked at the former holiday in, and had no issues.. Matter of fact, there wasn't enough room in the thing for us all, and it was FREEZING out..

I won't be able to make it, but for anybody interested Meade is giving away t-shirts for their new LX600. According to their facebook you need to printout a coupon and present it at their booth:

Somebody take pictures of themselves in them so we can see if they're worth showing up early!

Don't illegally park at the show.
Last year I saw and spoke to a cop writing ticket after ticket.
so many he was getting writer's cramp.
I guess the show helps increase revenue for them also...

It began as a trade show but there has been a steadily increasing number of vendors offering goods for sale on the show floor as an addition to the manufacturer displays. Some bargains will be available - and some great views of new or upcoming gear not being offered for sale at that location.

I'm almost positive I've seen backpacks (maybe not rolling ones, but I don't know that would make much difference). That's besides the ones the vendor-y folks bring in each morning, that is. Worst they can do is tell you no and you make random trips back to your vehicle to drop off purchases and come back in to shop more. I don't know what the exact procedure is -- stamping your hand, I think -- but there's some kind of in/out privileges & process 'cause I see them checking hands when folks go to & from the exhibit hall to the speakers' auditorium or the solar show or the cafeteria.
Can ya tell I don't really pay that much attention outside of running the web cam?

There's also a cafeteria right across from the lecture hall where the major talks are given. It's not gourmet, but it won't kill you.

The "stores" like OPT, Hands on Optics, High Point Scientific, etc, will have tons of stuff to sell. Makers like Meade, Celestron, the CCD camera folks, Astro-Physics, are mostly just "display".
Food: Is really a personal thing. I've always thought of it as poor and over priced, at least the stuff on the floor (student caf is like any other college), so I've always brought my own lunch to eat outside.
They stamp your hand and you can go in/out as many times as you want. There are even nice doors off the floor leading directly out to the parking lot that are nice to take large items out.
However, I suggest bringing a small carry bag for all of the free-bee handouts, etc.

I asked AP about selling stuff, and they said they'd need a New York vendor license to have a store there.
But you know, if Roland really wanted to go out with a bang, he'd secretly make a run of a new prescription somewhere between the Stowaway and the Traveler and appear at NEAF and sell them.
Just saying...

Sedat had a rolling bag, it looked full also
There are many restaurants nearby, I actually ordered an Italian Sub at NEAF and it was really good, much better than the warm food. 20 minutes away is Defiant Brewery, picked up 2 - 2.5 Liter bottles of beer and opened one with dinner. Overall NEAF is great, the kids are always busy (mine never want to leave) and the prices are good. Its great to see the people and the vendors/manufactors.

Well ,i will put in my 2 cents. I'm the little guy here who made it up to "the show" yesterday. After joining the forum a few short months ago,all I heard about was NEAF,NEAF this and NEAF that!...Well, the timing was right so I took advantage and got my butt up there since i'ts so close to my home (about 60 miles)..I was very, very impressed, no not just by the products offered but by the people. You guys and girls are all top notch when it comes to helping a newbie like me. Everyone I met took the time to talk to me and answer any questions I had. People around me would chime in on the conversation to help out.Maybe all of you aren't aware of how nice you are,so I just had to say it. Thanks......... I will be purchasing my telescope soon and a lot of important questions were answered, and all the product catalogs that were available are helpfull too!!! P.S. solar party was great too!!

My daughter, sister and I have lot of fun at NEAF last Saturday. Lot of telescopes, eyepieces and many books is more than I expected. Wow! Only one thing is that We got lost when we are in Suffern. My GPS did right but I dont know theres few small and sharp turns streets that We passed and we drove back to get right way to NEAF! Here's photo of my sister and myself and 24" Scope!

Back home finally...
Hotel
Facilities were excellent for the imaging conference.
Lunches were provided. The food was good and it was hot. They did an impressive job.
The hotel lobby bar... Dean got two white Russians from the hotel bar. He got $60 change from his $100 bill. Yup, those two drinks cost $40.
Mounts... AP had their new 1600 mount, I understand they're discontinuing their 1200. The cost of the 1600 is said to be $10k. They'll have a high resolution encoder option which is thought to add about $3k.
TEC had an f/1.44 telescope. It is a totally new design and this was the prototype finished last week. It's a 300mm aperture with a focal length of 425mm and a flat field. I'll try to attach a picture. The larger diameter part is a huge dew shield.
Glass... The larger diameter refractors, 200mm etc., are a problem now because glass isn't available. Domestic glass supplies are pretty much gone and foreign supplies are troubled with bubbles and inclusions.
Fire... A pop-up camper burned in the parking lot. The cause was a propane refrigerator. No one was hurt although the owner was inside. It went quickly, by the time he got the fire extinguisher from the front, the fire was beyond control.
Solar... There were quite a few solar telescopes there. My favorite was the double stacked Lunt 100, it was awesome. Saturday was a little too cloudy but Sunday was excellent.
Best astroimaging tip... Tony Hallas demonstrated that it is possible to open a .TIFF file as a camera raw file. There are tools in camera raw that are superior to those in the regular part of Photoshop. I'm a fan of Tony's DVDs so will point you there for more. I think it is his #5 that explores the the camera raw methods, it's $30.
For those who read my previous post about the hotel and the parking lot, I didn't attempt to stay in the parking lot there again but there were several people who were allowed to overnight there for several nights.
All the best,
David

Joseph and David, did either of you stop by the Astronomics and CN booth to say hi? My apologies if you did and I've forgotten already, I meet a lot of people at NEAF each year. You do look familiar, Joseph, so either I met you or I saw you at least.....
George, Neil, Saber - what about you guys, did y'all stop by?
Sedat did, it was lovely to see him again and I saw all the magazines in his bag!

Now you are talking, Helder
I am safely back home with all the magazines in tact
Was very good to see most of my friends there. Steph and Rusty were protecting me all the time against the evil
Alan Traino and his team did a great job again. The show was very satisfactory for me and worth all the effort. Remember, I came all the way from Istanbul just for NEAIC and NEAF. A total of 40 hours travel time !
Hope to come next year again.
Clear skies to you all,
Sedat

Okay, then you're exonerated. Gee, I was really only away the one time on Saturday for a break, but that *was* for about an hour, as I walked the floor myself; then a short time on Sunday to go solar view. Must've been one of those times. I'm sorry I missed you.
It's a bummer enough to find CNers stopped by and I didn't get to meet them, but when it's someone I already know and I miss them, I'm even sadder.

It was a very unfortunate accident. The camper was owned by Astro Gizmos. I was rolling into the vendor parking lot when I saw the fire department spraying foam on what remained of the shell.

Dean tells me he thought the price for the AP 1600 mount was higher than the figures I gave. I am merely passing on what I was told at the booth. Beyond that, I have no idea what the final price will be. I was also told that the mount could be ordered without high resolution encoders, and the encoders could be added later. I don't know if this is a user installable option or if the mount has to be returned.

The tag had an estimated price of $10,900. Roland thought the encoders would run upwards of $2500 per axis. Ouch but he did say they would be something we could install ourselves later on as an upgrade.
Hate to hear of Jeff losing his camper, glad he was not injured.

I think it is likely Dean is right about the encoder prices. The encoders on the 3600 mount increase the price by $6800.

After the investigation by the insurance company it was decided that it was an ammonia leak from the refrigerator which was then ignited by the pilot light.

Not when they use CFCs as refrigerant...which is why they replaced ammonia in the first place...

The ammonia refrigerators are used because they only need a heat source (propane flame) to drive the system instead of electricity. This is a very real type of accident. I'm sorry to hear this happened. I tend to say I'm glad it just happened to a machine, but I know it's quite a shock.
